Dog owners will learn how
A must-have for owners who want to start their new puppy off on the right paw, or for those who need to curb their disobedient dog's unwieldy ways, The Only Dog Training Book You'll Ever Need is a handy and reliable guide that will be turned to time and again.
Mostly and in general this book offers quite good training advice in compact form and encourages clicker training and positive methods. This is good. It also offers nice workflows to solving some of the most common problems arising in living with dogs.
However, there were some points I did not agree on with the author like some few points where the author indicated using physical punishment or intimidating the dog would be good. That's something I can't support in any way. There were also some term mix ups and concepts where the heading meant quite a different thing than what was actually explained, like flooding and negative punishment.
All in all I would not recommend this as "the only dog training book you'll ever need".
So far the most practical book about dog training I have ever read. It focuses on the practical stuff (which lots of books lack) leaving very few space for theory. I personally prefer the theory accompanied with the practical stuff. It is sometimes confusing when complaining about punishment but then instructing to get your jumping dog on a step-leash so that whenever he jumps he gets corrected by the punishment. Overall I consider it a helpful book with advices on how to solve lots of dog problems using positive reinforcements rather than negative ones (mainly). If you are just interested in training and not in theory this is the book for you. Because I consider a good trainer needs to know and understand the theory, I would not describe it as the only book you´ll ever need about dog training.
"Remember, an untrained dog still learns things, just not necessarily the things you want her to know. As I often tell my students, you get what you reinforce. If you don't give her any instruction, or you're vague and inconsistent when you do instruct her, she's sure to get confused, and this confusion will result in undesirable behavior and mischief. But if you pay attention to what your dog is doing right and spend time teaching her what is expected of her, you will be rewarded with a well-mannered pet who becomes a beloved member of your family."
This quote from the author says all that you need to know about dog training.
Oerhört tråkig men ändå oerhört viktig läsning för hundägare. Rekommenderas inte som sträckläsning utan hellre som uppslagsverk. Svar finns på det mesta. Därför en trea i stället för en tvåa.
