A military alpha hero. A flirtatious vixen. A crazed game of seduction.
One pair of panties changed his life.
“I’m putting my panties in your back pocket. You have until two am to get them back to me. If you do, you will be rewarded. Handsomely.”
Those were the words Victoria Johnson whispered to Scott Harris after she stuffed a pair of lacy red panties into his back pocket. That was Tori’s favorite game: No strings attached sex. But he’d have to chase her first.
Years later, when Scott returns from Afghanistan minus one leg, he thinks the sexual games are over. His military career is over. Hell, his life is over.
But then Tori shows up in his hospital room as fiery and flirtatious as the day he left. It turns out she’s more than just a beautiful disaster with sexy red panties.
Much more.
She may be trouble but she’s everything he’s ever wanted. Except for Tori, things are never that simple. Because Tori faces a tragedy of her own. An accident that rips her life apart, leaving her without sight and struggling to recover the woman she once was.
For Scott, Tori’s still the one he’s waited his whole life for. He’s done letting fate tear them apart. It will be a challenge to win her shattered heart once and for all.
Lucky thing Scott Harris never backs away from a challenge.
Chasing Fire is a full length, friends with benefits romance. LOTS of steam, no cheating and a HEA. Featuring a hot-as-hell alpha and a sexy artist who both have filthy mouths. Intended for a mature audience.
Avery Kingston writes sexy, emotional romance featuring wounded characters at a high heat level.
Avery is a wife to a man who’s demons play well with hers. Mom to a slew of crazy kids. Dog lover. Crazy cat lady. Artist. Free spirit. Lover of unusual beauty. Fitness junkie. Collector of boots and fonts. Angsty drama addict and avid wearer of yoga pants.
Avery is a military wife and a sucker for a good wounded hero story. She set out to write stories where the leading characters were smart, sexy, confident and strong. Avery began writing the type of romance novels she would want to read. Stories about real couples, wounded either physically or emotionally, with an open door into their steamy bedroom.

I am so in love with this book and Avery Kingston! What a debut. I love a good military romance and Chasing Fire was nothing short of fantastic.
My favorite part of military romance novels are the deliciously alpha heroes. Scott is exactly that and more. It’s no wonder that Tori fell for him because I fell right along with her. Tori was also such a great leading lady. I loved her attitude and how lively she was. Interlaced with the military aspect of the book, which is incredibly vivid and real, is a will-they-won’t-they type of relationship between Tori and Scott. Watching them navigate through the murky water of being friends with benefits to more had me at times dangerously close to chucking my kindle at something, but it made for some amazing sexual tension. *fans self* Plus, the story was exceptional and totally unputdownable so my kindle was safe.
Chasing Fire was fantastic. I can’t believe this is a debut novel. Amazing writing, superb characters, a vivid and honest portrayal of military life, and plenty of yummy steam make this a total must read. I’m so excited that this is the first book in a series because I need more. 5 stars.
Really, really wonderful characters. So flawed and strong and hilarious and vulnerable and clumsy and real. I was a little skeptical about a book in which both the hero and heroine sustained life-changing injuries, but this one somehow managed to work out.
It reminded me a lot of Game Changer by Melissa Cutler, my favorite of her Bomb Squad series. There are so many stories that deal with a military guy and his struggle to deal with a new injury, but not as many showing someone really living.
Like Game Changer, this story also had the added bonus of showing two people who were irrationally circling each other for no good reason but still managed to share the utmost vulnerability and caring for each other - for the real person they’d always been and always would be. It eschewed a lot of fluff around the edges to focus on the complications of simply loving someone in the wrong place and time... that ends up being what you need after all.
Finally, I have to give a shout-out not only to a tough heroine with a hardcore sense of humor and an alpha hero who shows true kindness at every turn. A delicate balance in both cases, but one Avery Kingston manages to create.
When Tori and Scott first meet, she leaves him a pair of her panties and challenges him to find her and return them. When he meets her challenge, what follows is a hot and sexy romance that takes them through several years of both good times and awful times, as Scott loses his leg and Tori her vision.
Tori is a great character--funny, smart, and sexy. I loved Scott too--he is the quintessential alpha male. I love how each of them coped with their individual hardships. All through the novel, I was rooting for Scott and Tori's happily ever after, although loving the journey to get there. Chasing Fire is an unputdownable romance that will make you fall in love with Tori and Scott. I can't wait for Book Two!
Romance isn't my normal genre, but the characters in this book were absolutely amazing. The interplay between Scott and Tori is reminiscent of Fire and Fury, an accurate description. The military representation was eerily accurate.
The heat between the two main characters was intense. The romance was not at all what I expected from a Romance type novel. The world of these characters is in-depth and colorful. I'm actually excited for the next one.
Handsome boy and hot girl meet and get together. What follows is 10 years of friends with benefits with a lot of the horrible downside of life affecting them both. The heartache and the pain in this book is interspersed with the joy and love that life can also bring. I don’t know why this love story has been on my shelf for so long.
There were many times when I almost dnf'ed this one. Both Scott and Tori were a hot mess and I didn't really like either of them. It took them 10 years before the could admit they wanted more from each other and even then it felt forced. By the end of the book I was just glad to be done and sort of wished I had quite reading on the first thought.
I absolutely loved Chasing Fire by Avery Kingston! I was captivated from the very first chapter, I liked Tori immediately she seemed like she was so much fun, and Scott wow totally Alpha loved him! The feels in this book, I was all over the place!! The love scenes between Tori and Scott were scorching hot and there were plenty of them. The scenes where they got to know each other were perfect. I could not believe that it took them a while for them to realize that they were in love. I loved the mistakes and the learning process what they went through for them to be with each other. I yelled and I cried several times throughout the book. I highly recommend it! The ending was perfect for them!! The FEELS!!!
Kingston’s debut novel, Chasing Fire, does not feel like one. There is an emotional depth throughout the story that continues to draw you through their ten year, sexy, beautiful, and sometimes heartbreaking relationship.
It is rare that I want to crawl through the words and try to grab characters to shake them and say “Look at what you are doing! Open your eyes! See what is in front of you!” But Avery had me waking my husband, yelling at this book. lol
Her use of supporting characters was elemental in keeping the flow of the storyline and increased the emotional edge.
I am now heading off to read the next book, Smoke and Mirrors, so I can continue to follow Tori and Scott.
I really did enjoy this book. When I was adding the book to my reading list on Goodreads I read a poor review about the character cheating...really? Unless I've read a different story then there was no actual cheating in this book. Yes, both characters had this weird open relationship, but I think under all circumstances it was called for. They were both messed up and their actions spoke louder than words. I really liked Scott. It took me longer to warm to Tori, but when you get both of their back stories, wounded Marine, blind girl, lots of history, it is a good story. It was something a little different for a change and I for one enjoyed that. I definitely recommend this to contemporary romance readers.
Ms Kingston has set up the perfect characters for a modern day love story. Today everyone is so into their own lives and trying to find a lifetime career that they close their hearts to what is happening right in front of them. Our main characters, Tori and Scott, are both doing that. One thing after another happens to them and they continuously are forced to examine their feelings for one another. Neither one being honest with the other. This is the norm for a decade!
This is a wonderful story with a strong message...don't wait until the unthinkable happens! Live life as it comes.
Possibly my favorite read of the year. It deals with an alpha male who meets a tough, take no shit chick who knows exactly what she wants. Well... You think you know how this book will go but there are plenty twists that will make you keep reading. This book also deals with some tough issues. But the author is very respectful of those issues and everything involved.
This book blew me away and grabbed my heart from the beginning to the end! Two of the best, flawed, lovable characters. It was so authentic and raw, yet funny at the right times; sexy, angsty, and full of emotion as well. But what an inspiring romance. I can not stress enough how much I loved this story and these characters! Can’t wait for the next book! ❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥😍😍😍
From the moment We are introduced to Scott I think i ‘bagsied’ that man a spot in my ‘book boyfriend Reverse Harem’.
Focused on his path… his goals and future is set before him… a navy seal.. until whilst on tour his plans are shattered… rocked to his core his dreams smashed and broken to pieces… he has nothing except his friend and some time ‘adult fun time friend ‘ Tori.
Tori is wild, free spirited and artistic…a pint sized hell on wheels..who will never settle down….she understands that what she has with Scott is fleeting and under no circumstances will she risk her heart to any man..let alone one who has one of the most dangerous occupations.
After a chance meeting in a dive bar leads to the longest standing game of kiss chase… through time and places.. they continuously return to each other. Grabbing what little time they are allowed..whenever and wherever they can…with their off the charts chemistry hiding how much they actually care for each other…neither one brave enough to reveal the depth of their feelings that they have kept secret from each other for such a long time.
Be warned this book has smoking HAWT boinkage! Between consenting adults ( if you don’t appreciate the fire don’t go anywhere near that fire ) 🔥🔥🔥
I’m not going to give anymore of the story away because as always I’m a great believer in #NoSpoilers and the fact that this book is way way way to layered and beautiful for me to chop down in to a few sentences… that will never convey just how beautiful and emotive this book actually is. READ IT…you WONT REGRET IT!!
There are books that have emotional themes, there are books that have emotional moments and then there are books that puncture a hole in your soul and slowly pour emotion from every paragraph, sentence and word.
THIS BOOK is one of those books… the kind of book that leaves you gasping for breathe because you have felt, loved, loved and breathed every page of that book from start to finish and you’ve…literally.. felt..all.. those… emotions!!
Avery Kingston is a new to me author, this was my first read of hers and definitely won’t be my last. Granted I’m stalking said author now.
Tori and Scott are survivors, each in their own way. We see their relationship blossom and fizzle a little out, yet never completely burning off. It’s a fictional story yes, but all emotions that were pulled out of me were anything but fictional. You see them reach high and lows. Even though both lie to themselves about what they mean to eachother, we can easily see that they have this intimacy that ties them together. It’s hard to describe what that type of connection that is. Soulmates is the word that comes to mind, but many don’t believe in that. Which is fine, to each their own. Yet we can’t deny this couples force of attraction. It’s there, it’s unique.
You see them with other people as well, and many may assume it’s not meant to be since this happens. But it does. In real life it happens all the time. That’s what drew me in. The rawness and realness of their relationship. Many can relate to their struggles and demons. Even without many explanations as to how they got there.
Their relationship was literally a rollercoater ride. You felt all the dips and turns. Sure I probably didn’t agree to some of their questionable predicaments they caught themselves in. I might of yelled at them a couple times here and there.
It was all worth it! They are so beautifully flawed, I was captured by it. A great homage to our Vets and impaired individuals. I cannot gush enough about the realness of this story. All their troubles and traumas are life events one can easily stumble upon. That’s what sold me on this story. Okay maybe Scott (Mother Effing) Harris didn’t hurt either. I cannot wait for the next installment!
OMG this book! AMAZING! I'm a sucker for a wrenching story with all the feels and loads of heat. Chasing Fire delivers on all counts!
Scott and Tori meet in their early 20s in a DC dive bar one night. The sparks are instant and after one sexy game of pool, they end up in bed together and have crazy good sex (it's, like, crazy good. All sex in real life should be this good!). It kicks off a 10-year FWB/NSA type of relationship centering around a lacy pair of panties (I love it!), but it's SO much more than that. They also become best friends and both know deep down that they are meant for each other. Then what's the problem? Career goals, relationship hangups, epic stubborn streaks, and life-changing physical injuries. Both Tori and Scott endure traumatic physical injuries that forever change their lives.
I lost count of the times I wanted to yell at both Tori and Scott to stop being stubborn jerks and just give into their feelings for each other already! LOL, that's the beauty of this story though--you see their human side, why they make the mistakes they make, and how each of them struggles to find themselves while reconciling their feelings for the other. It's a frustrating story, but that's what makes it so good and so intriguing. I love that it's a battle, it's a struggle to be together, but neither of them gives up the fight.
And the love scenes? OMG so hot and sexy! Hot love scenes are such an important part of a years-long romance and Avery Kingston delivers! I can't wait to read more about Scott and Tori! This author has cranked out a great first book and I'm so looking forward to reading more of her writing!
I genuinely liked this book. When I read the description I was immediately intrigued since I'm a hardcore supporter of our wounded troops. There's plenty of trials and tribulations the characters have to overcome due to Scott's amputation but to top it off Victoria loses her sight. Now I dont know about you guys but my first thought was FML. Well not mine but the characters, of course. That's a crap load of drama and downright depressing. Not only that but I haven't even read the book yet I'm just reading the description. My curiosity won in the end, obviously since I'm writing this review. My actual rating for the book is 3.5 stars. The storyline was good and as I previously mentioned I truly liked the book. But... the same behavior was repeated over and over and over. Very little seemed to progress in a positive way in Scott and Victoria's relationship. More questions rather than answers surfaced and I guess I was just hoping the book would have dived more into Tori's backstory. Thankfully it appears Avery has more books on the way so I will get my answers then. So yes Avery I will be stalking you on social, as requested, so I can get the details on your next release. So, ladies and gentlemen buy the book and support our new indie author. Read it, review it and hopefully you will enjoy it as much as I did.
This was my first time reading a book by this author and I wasn’t disappointed at all. In fact I had a hard time putting it down. This book had all the feels you could get. It was happy, sad, sexy, hot af, emotional at times, but I loved every single page. Scott was a military man who lost part of his leg from the knee down. And Victoria was a wild and sexy woman who loved playing games with Scott by putting a pair of underwear in his pocket and making him return them to her at a certain time. This is how they met. In a bar, where she beat him playing pool. They played this crazy game for ten years until a horrible accident and Tori, Victoria, lost her sight. She helped Scott when he came home, to adjust to losing his leg. Scott was upset she didn’t call him when she lost her sight. He realized how much he loved her and set about to show her knowing how much it was going to take to convince her of his true feelings. This book was awesome and I can’t wait to start book 2. I want to see where their relationship goes because these two have such chemistry between them that it burns up the pages. The author did an amazing job ❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥
This book blew me away! I am so in love with this book. I was drew in right away and would not let me go till I finished the last page, even then I was still stuck thinking about these characters. Avery Kingston is a new author to me and I cannot wait to read more of her work. There aren't many books I read that the characters steal my heart and doesn't give it back! But that is exactly what happened in this book! This book is a series emotional roller-coaster, you could feel all the feelings these characters was feeling, wither it was sadness from life struggles to happiness. Avery really has a way of making you feel exactly what you are reading, its like a move playing in your head while reading. I am so glad that Avery messaged the blog and gave me the opportunity to read this book! This is must read! I recommend this book to anyone and everyone
Puuh...I just finished this book and am emotional spend. That was an emotional roller coaster ride. Sometimes I loved it and sometimes I hated it (but somehow loved that too..mostly). I got so invested in the both main characters Scott and Tori. I wanted their happy end like nothing else, but oh boy they haven't had it easy. One soul ripping tragic after the next happened to them and I was amazed how strong of character they were. And I was so totally happy and relieved when they finally, FINALLY let their feelings for each other free . It was really heart warming and I think the topic of disability and what disabled people have to endure sometimes was portrait good. Only reason why it's not 5 stars is, because there were a little too much other men and women in the story and my poor heart screamed for them to get together already.

Author Avery Kingston really lights the pages on fire in this first book of the series. This story is filled with fabulous characters that I truly adore. They grab your attention and dig out a place in your heart. The emotional pull of the story whether it’s the huge life challenges that can bring sadness, to the seriously funny moment you just outright laugh at, this is what keeps you wanting more and more. The magnitude of life altering issues for these characters really give you something not only to read about but to think about as you realize just how many people face them daily in real life. I am so glad I picked up this book and I can’t wait for book two so I continue with their story and see where it takes them on this fantastic journey!
This debut novel is absolutely fantastic. Scott and Tori are two broken characters that will have you flipping the pages as fast as you can to see what happens. Tori and Scott meet before they both have their accidents and continue to meet up on and off through the years. When I say meet up, I mean have some hot, steamy sex. Tori’s childhood keeps her from letting anyone get too close. Scott tries, but it’s not easy breaking down her walls. Will he ever succeed or will they finally let the flames burn out? No spoilers, so grab your copy and fall in love with this debut author’s fantastic book.
Oh my gosh, I loved this book so much! Right from the beginning I could tell I was going to love it. The angst, the laughter, the spicy stuff, I loved it all. Tori wasn't your typical female main character. She was feisty, sometimes crude, and mouthy. She also had a caring and sweet side too though. Scott was a fantastic character as well. He was so strong yet so soft. I fell for him pretty early on. I loved how different they were from each other, but how well they fit together. Their story is totally unconventional but still really beautiful. I can't wait to get started on book #2!

BRILLIANT! This was a fantastic read, one that will definitely stick with me. This is a new to me author so I was pleasantly surprised. Can't wait to read more of her books. The characters were amazing, the story line was superb and was easy to read. In fact, I couldn't put it down! The author kept you guessing and chucked so many twists and turns in there that you never knew what what coming next. The story is quite in-depth, so you get to know the characters quite well and almost live the story through them and feel all their anguish and celebrate their happiness too! Great book!
I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! The journey of their relationship sucked me in, after reading loadssss of books recently with the insta-love theme. The emotions the author portrayed were so real, I felt like I was the characters. Would definitely recommend this book to everyone. I was going through a dry spell in the sense that I couldn't find a book that held my interest long enough or was too short to savor, when I stumbled upon this gem of a book. That was a very lucky day for me.
