Georgia born and bred, I am an artist, a writer, and a general pain in the ass. I spend most of my days working on my next book or bettering my art. Writing is my identity and I love every minute of it. It's work, lots of work (sometimes I work 12+ hours a day and I never get a vacation) but I don't regret doing it. I currently share my house with a myriad of dogs, a few cats, a saltwater aquarium filled with coral and fish, as well as my partner who's great at giving hugs when the day's been rough. And of course, my editor and PA, who helps me keep life reasonably organized. At least so I won't walk out the door without wearing pants.
This one is difficult to rate simply because it's unfinished. That cliff is real, y'all.
Also because this series is edging away from what drew me to it in the first place which was the hardcore BDSM elements, proud, card-carrying member of #TeamPain that I am.
The Claiming scene with Kaleb, Aaron and Leo was probably the highlight of the book for me. Exhibitionism, forced orgasms, public sex that inspired an orgy amongst the other gods and doxies in attendance. Good stuff.
Then it all went to shit.
Many tears were shed. They were on the cusp of getting everything they wanted and instead wound up heartbroken and betrayed.
It is still bad wrong but the bestiality theme seems to be the new flavor of bad wrong, superseding the kink. There is some kink including electric play, orgasm denial/chastity and some impact play just not as much PAIN as I would've liked. As much as I enjoy PAIN I'm not a huge fan of painful sex; the term monster cock isn't a exaggeration, folks.
However, I wasn't as repulsed by the bestiality in this one as I was in Crocuta, Crocuta, owing mostly to the sheer level of alpha possessiveness both The Chimera and Taurus showed for their doxies. I'm kind of a sucker for the possessive ones.
The other thing that I struggled with was all the threads and head hopping. I'm positive this whole thing is going to culminate in some epic event and I have my popcorn ready. But I always have trouble rating what I call "the set up book", so here's me chickening out and reading Purgatory before I rate them. Because really, they cannot be read apart.
Here's hoping I don't chicken out and have to read God of Monsters before rating the trilogy...
OMG, I knew there was going to be a cliffhanger...but holy shit - I didn't expect that! Not after tearing out my heart for Kaleb and Aaron once already.
We are back with Leo, Kaleb and Aaron in this installment and boy does it start off hot! Kaleb and Aaron are preparing for the Claiming banquet and rare as they are, this one will be historic as Leo will be claiming two Doxies - something that is unheard of. If you've made it this far in the series, or even just read the blurb, you know that bad things have been brewing both within the Association and outside of it and one of those bad things comes to fruition on what should be the most joyous of occasions.
That bad, horrible, gut-wrenching thing sends Kaleb into a tailspin, feeling betrayed and hurt. Even though Aaron has been a big help, Kaleb still hasn't fully accepted what it is to be a Doxie and he lashes out at Leo in his anger and despair. Leo's desire to keep Kaleb for himself is at odds with his realization that without sharing Kaleb with the other gods, Kaleb will suffer and likely die if anything happens to Leo. This results in Leo making a decision that requires him to intensify Kaleb's Doxie training. Meanwhile, the Chimera has his own plan to protect Kaleb. The creature has even more power than anyone knows about and his foremost intent is to keep Kaleb safe, but the methods could destroy him instead.
There is so much that has been building in the books and it's clear that Adrienne Wilder is not going to go easy on anyone. This one hurt and left me with a need for vengeance. My heart broke about 20 percent of the way in, but that had nothing on what he pulls out and hits us with further on. It's a good thing I had some online support while reading this one.
Aside from the emotional devastation, these books are heavy on kinky sex so please heed the entertaining warnings at the start of each book. Pain, fear and humiliation are the key to training doxies and Kaleb’s training is ramped up here. Leo likes nothing more than Kaleb's pain and Kaleb struggles so much with his warring desire for it and his humiliation at it. There is also plenty of sharing, some interspecies loving and mythical creatures doing their thing. It's definitely not a series for the squeamish.
You should not read this book without having read the prior stories. There is some serious mythology, world building and complex storylines about the creation of the doxies, the place of the gods and the Association in the world, and the upcoming potentially cataclysmic Tide which is likely to rain havoc on everything. This all leads me to Alton, the creator and head of the Association. From the very first book, The Chimera, Alton has existed in a gray area for me. His intent seems to be to protect the doxies and thereby ensure the existence of the gods, but his scientific meddling has its victims. Every time we learn more of what he's been doing, I've felt more uneasy. I'm just going to say Alton has officially crossed the line for me and leave it at that so as not to spoil anything or just let this review devolve into an expletive filled rant, but I really need to see him suffer for what he's done.
The timeline here runs concurrent with Crocuta Crocuta (Book 5) and picks up shortly after Reborn (Book 4). I would love to talk about everything that happens here but that would spoil too many things. There are appearances from many of the prior characters including Sonny and his bad attitude, Zen, and The Priest. We are introduced to a few more gods including Taurus who I can't wait to see more of and, happily, will also feature in the next book.
I think Adrienne Wilder did his best to emotionally destroy his readers with this book. One thing after another, each worse and, as forewarned, ending on a cliff-hanger. The running storyline has held my interest through six books and doesn't show any signs of slowing. With all the betrayal, the hints of danger to come from men, monsters, gods and the universe I'm not sure how much more intense this series can get, but I'm buckled in and ready. This ends on a cliffhanger alright, but don't fear - the next installment, Purgatory, is already available and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
******* It's a good thing Book 7 came out today because WTF?? Why? And yes, more Taurus please!
Seriously WTF is going on ? I don’t know who is loyal to whom ! Poor Kaleb has been on the end of shit in this book, Aaron being taken and rediscovered, Leo - who knows what ?? And the Chimera. Something big is coming, that’s for sure
What the hell lady!!!!! I know you said in the beginning you were giving us a cliffhanger but DAMN. So many questions, so many. But I know we'll get the answers soon.
I finished reading The Claiming last night and had to give myself a cooling off period before writing my review because WHAT THE...ARGH! How could you Adrienne?! How. Could. You.
Backtracking here. The book starts with... No, wait. Let me go back a little further. Let’s start with Dear Reader, Trigger Warning, and Time Line. Some people bypass them, however, I don’t. They are like boxes of chocolate in you never know what you’re going to get. In this case, I laughed myself silly, got ready to get raunched on and, now that I finished the book, am desperately looking for matches.
It all starts with Kaleb and Aaron getting ready for the banquet where Leo will be claiming both as his Doxies. YAY! More of my favorite characters. Let the raunching begin. And oh man is it hot! It's what keeps me coming back for more. The Claiming has me breathless and squirmy. And then...
Someone really needs to kill Sol. Oh gosh. How? No! Aaron! I’m crushed. I feel Kaleb’s pain and confusion. Which sets the precedence for the rest of the book. Old characters coming back, meeting new ones and being curious. Highs, lows, the freaks, and shockers. There was no putting this book down.
Let the emotional roller coaster begin because the ending is one mother of a cliffhanger. Betrayal. You call that betrayal?! That is - JEEBUS! - I don’t know what to call it! I screamed, cried, chucked my Kindle and cursed out the author! Again Adrienne, how could you! Just when I don’t think I could be any more shocked, you go and slip that humdinger in. Angry sobbing here.
Let me warn you now, do NOT read this book unless you have book #7, Purgatory, in hand. To go further, do not read this book without reading the whole series. Stressing the word ‘series’ here. This is not one you can just jump into and hope to catch up. Besides, you wouldn’t want to miss out on the beginning of Leo, Kaleb, Aaron and all that raunchy goodness.
I received this book from The JeepDiva with the express purpose of an honest review. The opinions, contents, and rating of this review are solely mine. Flames: 5 - Because Doxies don't get safewords.
This one broke my cold dark heart. Seriously. I can’t believe what happened. IT CANNOT BE TRUE. No no no. I don’t want it. I’m sitting here not knowing what to do with myself because if what happened really happened, if it’s really true, then I don’t know if I want to read the rest. 😥😥💔💔💔
God I love this series! The exquisite details of this world setting are so vivid,I am overtly giddy for the next book! If you haven't given this a read yet....why not?!
Omg!! I know there was a cliffhanger warning before the book started. But I did NOT expect it to stop where it did and nnggghh!! I have no words!
This whole book has been upheaval after upheaval. I’m literally at the edge of my seat with my heart racing just trying to catch up to the words my brain is reading.
Omg!!!
I’m glad though that we’ve come back to the original threesome - Leo, Kaleb and Aaron. Although, omg! Everything is wrong!!!
I can’t... I can’t make sense of everything that’s happening and I need to. Two more weeks to wait till this story continues. Adrienne Wilder better have an absolutely perfect way to make sense of everything because I can’t! My brain can’t see where this can possibly gooooooo 🤯
This is a series so start with book one if you want to follow the storyline and characther development BUT if your looking for a one off kinky MM read you can dive right in and enjoy.
I have enjoyed watching Leo and Kaleb grow as a God and Doxie couple, Kaleb is a doxie/super sub and his complicated as he hates the pain but gets off on it too. One thing to remember with this series is it is fantasy so the almost non con part is irrelevant, so you can just enjoy the kinky acts they all get upto and trust me its BDSM++++
There is a cliffy and a moment or two I never expected in this book, so you will be wanting book 7 asap.
Another amazing read in this series! Anxiously awaiting the next as this one ends in a major cliffhanger. Even if this type of read isn't your typical genre don't hesitate to start at the beginning. You will not regret it!
At this point in the series Adrienne Wilders wildly hot and delicious brand of Agony and Pain feels like coming home to me. Though the novelty factor has worn off, these books are still insanely hot in their very own disturbing way. I loved finally being back with Leo and his delicious cruelty and I especially enjoyed the Chimera taking an active role again *purrs*. That’s what I thought after the first few pages.
I have to admit I don’t always follow the plot and all the interwoven storylines and I imagine it gets only worse from here on out. But just to be with Leo and Kaleb alone is almost enough for me to come back over and over again. That’s what I felt like during the course of the book.
Then the ending happened and I can’t even begin to process it. If I’ve disliked Alton before I have no words for my feelings now. That we “lost” Aaron was bad enough, but this….
I’m upset with this boom and I came very close to DNF and quitting the series. I don’t like the betrayal and where this is going. It left me upset and crying, so the writing was splendid but the plot is just twisting too far away for me. This series has gotten too far from Leo and Kaleb. I fell in love with them and now I feel as broken as them. From the beginning there was always something I didn’t like about Alton it has grown and grown. There was also always something I didn’t like about Sonny. He seemed to think being a god put him above Kaleb, that he was superior, better. His attitude has always been crap and it gets worse every time he makes an appearance.
I came to this series late because I was waiting on a other book to come out. I got hooked from book one, but the fact that Leo is murdered by Alton in this book had me stop mid sentence and I have to really consider if I want to go on! I’ve been with Kaleb, Leo and Aaron since book 1 and even though book 5 deals with Cerberus you still know it’s coming back to Leo. Only for this to happen. My heart is definitely feeling what Kaleb is 😩
