The overall goal of this book is to educate and motivate diabetic patients to become active members of their health care team. This book provides an outline to help people take control of their diabetes, improve their quality of life, and delay the complications of diabetes. Chapters include the diabetes warranty program, for your eyes only, preserving your diabetic kidneys, caring for diabetic feet, heart and stroke information for the diabetic, psyching out diabetes, medication information, diabetes and computers, travel, workplace, managed care, just to name a few.
I absorbed a few more facts about the disease but over all I think this particular book cannot be relied on at this point since it is copyrighted 2001. I think real disease management needs to be done with current medical knowledge. The author, a diabetic himself, was easy to understand even though he often wrote about pretty technical things involved with diabetes. If a book can be found that is from the current year and written by this same author I would read it.
This is a great book for the newly diagnosed or for anyone who wants information on diabetes in an easy-to-read style. It covers a lot of ground but does so in a way that is easy to digest and, unlike many other books I have read on diabetes, not so overwhelming that you won't know where to start with applying the knowledge you gain. The reader can tell that the author has diabetes. Aside from accounts of personal experiences, there is a familiarity present between author and disease. Those of you living with any disease that requires constant maintenance will understand what I mean by that. Overall, easy to read, helpful information, easy to understand. Highly recommended.
