3 stars, maybe 3.5 for its genre (light time travel romance)? Another Kindle freebie that I downed last night (I was popping these things down like so much chocolate while I mustered up the fortitude to take on Ficciones again).

Maggie Mitchell, weeping in a garden after watching the guy she's loved all her life marry someone else, tells her sad story to a friendly elderly lady who offers her the chance to escape into someone else's life in the distant past, through a magical pocket watch. The premise is a little iffy and I'm not going to get into it too deep, but basically she'll take over the life of someone who otherwise would have died. Maggie thinks the lady needs a visit with a psychiatrist, but just to prove her wrong she does the pocket watch thing ... and ends up in Scotland in the year 1270, with a handsome (of course) Scottish laird who's very reluctantly betrothed to her ... or rather, to the girl Margaret whose body Maggie has taken over. Margaret was visiting Logan (were Scottish lairds really named Logan in the thirteenth century? moving on ... ) to cement their alliance, but she was an absolute shrew to him and everyone in the castle. Maggie finds she's got a lot of work to do, to undo the hatred Margaret has earned in her last three weeks at Logan's castle.

Claiming amnesia due to a horse fall (that would have killed Margaret if Maggie hadn't taken over her body), Maggie does her best to apologize to all and sundry and convince Logan and his family and clan that she's not such an awful person. Maggie is very tempted to use the pocket watch to return to her own time and body -- but if she does that, Margaret's body that she's in will instantly drop dead (said the old lady who gave her the watch) and a terrible clan war will probably result. Maggie only has 60 days to figure out what to do before she's permanently locked in this past life. Maybe Logan's kisses will help her decide ...

This is a cute, very light time travel romance, a fun read if you don't think too hard about the premise and are more interested in kisses with hot lairds than depth and historical accuracy. And it's free and all, so there's that. Enjoy!

Ummm okay!
This Kindle unlimited book has many a 5-star rating, so I jumped in.
In fact I downloaded three in the series. And now I'm feeling foolish.

I am on a time-travel/portal spree right now. But, this book just did not do it for me.
After a perfectly angsty beginning with the h being friend-zoned by the love of her life, it rapidly went down the Scottish hills.
Simply checking all the boxes for a trope doesn't make a good story. The writing is flaky with plot holes, the plot and romance simplistic, the dialogue American! 'Spitting viper'? Adder maybe but no, not viper. 'Ye', 'Lass', 'Wee' don't make a Gaelic! Pssst, no 'Och!'
And the h is a model of a well mannered kid. Every page is peppered with her apologies and thanks!

In time-travel stories, I am always conflicted if I want a new body for the h or not. (It's usually the woman who travels back. Men rarely travel - if they do, they come to the future. Has to be a reason that I'm missing here.)
Anyways, in HRs, for same-body time-travel making sense, I'd recommend Donna Lea Simpson's Time For Love because she knows how to write an HR and her romance is sweet till it lamed out because of reasons(!). For entering the body of a hated-by-everyone person, I'd say Goodger's [book:When There is Hope|33197 - it is angsty and well fleshed out.

I gave The Pocket Watch 3 1/2 stars because, well, it was a Novella, and I'm not fond of novellas, but I liked the story and I may actually remember it... perhaps with some prodding. So not quite worthy of 4 stars.

It was not a typical Christian novel, however a Catholic would say it was. (The church in the story, and all its holy days and rituals, were Catholic.) I was raised Catholic, even went to Catholic school, so I'm pretty familiar with the faith, and other aspects of many people within the faith. "Language" isn't usually a big deal. My family used words I wouldn't use today as a born again Christian. Now, mind you, only one word was used, a few times, not a foul word, but unnecessary. This is no big deal to most. I'm just a prude. (wink)

Anyway... synopsis...

Whew, I've told way more than was necessary, but my synopsis is for my benefit... so I can remember it in the future when I look back to see if I read the book.

On the whole, it was a clean book. Um, I can't think of what the moral would be, if there was one, but I guess that's okay.

I have been seeing this book in Kindle Unlimited for a while now. I kept passing it by, but I finally decided to give it a try. I was very surprised at how quickly I fell in love with this story.

Maggie is heartbroken when the love of her life gets married. She is alone and a woman comes to her and offers her a chance of a lifetime. She offers her the chance to have a new life as someone else. All she has to do is wear a small pocket watch to bed. While Maggie thinks the lady is crazy, she decides to give it a shot. Upon awakening she finds that the woman was serious and she is no longer where or who she was before. She finds herself in Scotland in the 13th Century. She also finds herself in the body of Margaret. She is betrothed to Logan. She keeps the secret of who she really is for a while but she finally breaks down and tells Logan. She has a short time before her chance to go home is gone forever. Will Logan want her to stay or send her away?

This was a great book. It's a time travel romance that really grabbed me. Many of them are the same old thing, but this one was surprisingly different. I think that's why I loved it so much. I love the setting, storyline, romance, and characters. Honestly, I loved it all. It was a very easy book to get into. It had time travel, romance, history, and action. It was really well written and was joyful to read! I can't wait to read more of The Pocket Watch Chronicles!...Stormi

Stars: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Wonderful: 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Maggie Mitchell e Laird Logan Carr 🥰🥰
Happy reading, and until the next reading... 😘

Bit too light for me but was a sweet story. Didn't get to know the characters too well as is was quite short.

Amazing.

I loved this book more than I can say. While I wish it was longer and there was more to read about how they go on with life it still ended perfectly. Adding this to my top ten favorite books.

Two things: this is a novella and it's actually more like Christian Romance.

Not that either of those two things are bad, but they're my two least favorite things in books.

I've read a time travel romance before that was a body swap. I'm not a huge fan of that because it feels like one person is losing without having any say in the decision. The fact that the ancient person was destined to die, no matter what the present day character decided, made me feel better about it because that meant they weren't losing anything.

I enjoyed this book. The characters were fun and well developed. Again, I like this method of time travel with the body swap.

So...

I was excited about this book. A time-travelling romance? Definitely one of my favourite tropes. The problem is that everything is SO FAST PACED. It kinda goes like this:

- Heroine has a present day problem
- Meets weird lady that gives her time-travelling device
- Weird explanation on how she will exchange souls and be in someone else's body (awkward)
- Time-travel to the 13th century.
- Meets Hero
- Hero doesn't like her because he thinks she is the original soul (the original inhabitant of the body, who's died)
- Hero suddenly likes her
- Hero suddenly loves her
- Heroines suddenly loves hero too
- Oh no mayor accident that came out of nowhere to fan the drama
- Heroine stays
- Epilogue: Heroine and Hero have five children

It's a quick to read novella, but it's just TOO fast-paced for my taste and it didn't really give me time to actually get to know the characters enough to like them (or root for them). Plus, it's basically insta-love, which I'm not a big fan of.

Feel good romance with time travel through Soul Exchange

Maggie Mitchell is devastated when the love of her life marries another woman. She meets Gertrude who offers her a chance to be somebody else with the use of a pocket watch.

This is a story about time travel through soul exchange. It's based on the theory that you can go back in time and exchange Souls with somebody who is just about to die and by entering that person's body, their life is extended.

I really enjoyed this story more than I thought I would. It kind of reminds me of The Travelers but not exactly. Maggie stays in the past originally because she thinks she can help. However once she falls in love with Logan, she decides she's not going back home.

I loved this book. It was tender, uplifting, and sweet, yet with great twists turns, and a healthy dose of enjoyable angst.

I was instantly smitten with the two main characters, Maggie and Logan. They were flawed, like any good characters, but incredibly likable.

Truly, this was a great read. The flashes of Scottish history make you feel like you're there, but the book is not bogged down with historical plotting, scheming, etc. I was riveted the whole way through.

I will be reading every single other one of this writer's books. I'm so glad to have found a new favorite author!

Actual rating: 4.5 time travelling stars. ^_^

I really do love time travel romance. This is one of the many books that I have with time travel romance theme on it.

This was a short book. Usually when the time travel happens, it involves a place or a portal. This one made use of a time travel piece which is a pocket watch.

I enjoyed reading this. It was short and the plot is simple. I love it. :)

Logan and Maggie's story is cute. It was smooth sailing and just some minor bumps along the way. I love it. It was a good start for the month of March. ^_^

I like it. I like the whole idea or concept, but I dont think Im reading the sequel because one of the worst things that I reject most it's that the author writes in ancient english. Even if I could understand it, I dont like it.
Anyway, although this little thing, the book it's ok.

I remember watching Warren Beatty's remake of “Heaven Can Wait” … Leo Farnsworth has been killed, and Joe Pendleton, recently (and incorrectly) deceased is offered the opportunity to take over his body. Taking over someone else's body – someone else's LIFE – someone who isn't using it or CAN'T use it anymore … perhaps a concept like that could be expanded upon, to be explored in more than a 2 1/2 hour movie …

Enter author Ceci Giltenan. In “The Pocket Watch”, Maggie Mitchell is transported back to 13th century Scotland. She has 60 days to live life, and to right any wrongs she finds with her “host body” (my words, not the author's). However, there are problems. The folks who crippled and almost killed her host are NOT happy to see that she's up and around – and must decide how best to handle that bit of misfortune (for them, anyway). And the Laird, Logan Carr … is he a temptation to NOT go back at all? Or is he the reason why she should flee back to her own life as soon as possible?? After all, would he even believe what must sound like a far-fetched story, that she comes from a time in the future when some machines fly, and others can travel across the land without a horse or ox pulling it, or …

Ms. Giltenan has created a most interesting concept, and shows the start of an interesting universe. Will she limit herself to modern day lasses moving back in time to Scotland? Or will other eras / lands / genders / etc. open themselves up in future tales? For that matter, is it meant to be a one-way trip, or might individuals from the past travel to the future? Perhaps even trading bodies and lives to “see how the other half lives”? To be seen ...

RATING: 4 1/2 stars, rounded up to 5 stars. The book was a bit predictable, at least at a high level – the genre almost calls for that! BUT it kept my interest throughout.

I purchased this book while @ Indie BookFest because the premise intrigued me. I’m a HUGE history buff and the thought of going back in time to live and immerse myself in specific time periods have often fascinated been and been the subject of numerous daydreams. This story did not disappoint.
Maggie is devastated after she attends the wedding of the only man she’s ever loved to another woman. Skipping the reception, she heads to the Sculptural Gardens that her mom took her to when she was younger, she meets Gertrude and older woman who presents a fantastical offer. The chance to switch souls with a woman from 11th century Scotland who is about to die. Maggie will have up to 60 days in Scotland, but in the present time it would only be 60 seconds. Maffie didn’t believe it would actually work until she woke up on the back of a horse racing along the Scottish Highlands in the year 1271. While there Maggie inhabits the body of Margaret Grant who is betrothed to Laird Logan Carr.
This book is wonderfully written. I fell in love with not only Maggie and Logan, but also with Lady Agnes. The characters leap off the pages and take over tiny bits of your heart like a long lost relative. Ms. Giltenan has created a wonderful world and I cant wait to go back.

if an old lady with a pocket watch offered you a chance to time travel would you do it? Maggie Mitchell doesn't really believe it will work, but she's willing to give it a try so when she comes to on the back of a horse in 13th century Scotland she's more then shocked. Laird Carr despises the person that he thinks she is and why wouldn't he? Maggie is in Margaret's body and has been nothing other then a shrew to everyone she meets so when Laird Carr starts to notice differences Maggie claims amnesia and slowly starts to adjust to life in the 13th century. Will Maggie want to leave before the allotted 60 days are up or will she find love and stay with Laird Carr? Ceci Giltenan writes a novel that is not only a real page turner, but a truly enjoyable book from start to finish. Ms. Giltenan is a very talented writter who knows exactly how to write a book that keeps my full interest.

I'd give it a 4.75 stars.

I loved everything about it. A broken girl after finding out her ex boyfriend, the love of her life is marrying someone else. While crying she meets an old lady who offers her a gift promising that her life is going to change. I don't want to give away too much as it was an amazing story. And you all will enjoy it as i have.

Although, i hated the fact that she was away from her family, but the old lady made my day when she took the watch of Maggie. Her gift to Maggie's little sister was special and I liked that everyone was opened to the possibility of time travel (Haters don't last long *ahem Maggie ahem*). She certainly found out first hand never to doubt an old lady.

I wonder if i can go back in time...

Where do you meet an old lady?

The first half of the book was quite interesting. The second half was not quite that good and the ending was a disappointment. Then I read that this was a novella. That may explain the problem of the kind of awkward last part of the book before the ending. I don't particularly like novellas. My rating 2.5.

One thing I did like about the book was that the MC, having been warned that the pocket watch would transport her into the past, didn't spend the first 1/4th of the book angry and disoriented, as is so often the case with time travel fiction. Plus, the excuse of the head injury took care of so many other possible issues that have to be dealt with but sometimes are side tracks.

The book was well written and was easy enough to read. My problem with it for me was that the story lack depths. I don't know for other readers but for me the story sported around on a very mundane lifestyle.

The way the story was written were not by showing but telling that I didn't feel anything for the story and even though the heroine Maggie was from the future and had studied really hard about it we were only shown twice where she was able to use her knowledge and help save someone but it wasn't really that much. I know there are troubles to rise if she appeared too knowledgeable and be accused of witchcraft. I just wish that the author had shown us more about her skills being in action not just telling us that "the people now look for Maggie for medicine when Bearnas wasn't available" how I wish we were shown how she help and how she gave medicine to everyone and how they trust her when she was supposed to be clueless.

The romance between the two couples for me are shallow. The book did try to make the couple appear madly in love with each other but to me the love between them seems forced mainly because we are told through a narrative point of view from the couple. Another thing was the couples weren't that much interesting. The person I'm most intrigued with is probably the old lady Gertrude. I know that this became a huge let down for me because I had high hopes for the story that it wasn't well met.

I do like the idea of the story and it wasn't really that bad so I do recommend it to someone who would like to read a time-travel romance.

This is an interesting, well written book with a bit of a different look at time travel. When Maggie is given a special pocket watch, she is told it will take her back in time. What she didn't quite realize was she would find herself in another woman's body and life. This is that tale and will take readers on a romantic journey back to the late twelve hundred and to the country of Scotland. Can you change the past? How about a person in the past? The author takes an interesting look at those questions as readers tag a long for the ride.
