Dick Denny is a veteran of the 82nd Airborne and a graduate of Auburn University. Dick SCUBA dives, hikes, camps, and has summited Kilimanjaro. The Double D is a disappointment to his family, a fun guy to be around, and a handy guy to have about in a pinch.
HELL FOR THE COMPANY by Dick Denny (published by Foundations Books) is one of the most entertaining novels I've read in a long time; a hilarious romp of detective and military-like battles with detailed weaponry and outstanding, realistic characters. Denny's descriptive writing skills paints pictures of his characters in your mind (Gary Oldman, for instance). All of these elements are entwined within a fantasy genre that will have you on the edge of your seat wanting more.
As a new author on the publishing scene, Dick Denny's story-telling skills are amazing. His one-liner come-backs had me laughing out loud. Without giving anything away, the premise of book is a fight for the Sword of Wrath between a gumshoe, his best friend, Jammer, and a stripper who works for Heaven (when I grow up, I want to be just like her). LMAO!
This is a definite "To Be Read" book. As a bonus, there are 2 more books to this series. I can't wait to nab them.
Five+ stars for this most humorous and engaging novel!
I truly enjoyed the writing style and the story the author put forth. There was spice and love throughout the story, without having the author resort to using the thesaurus to describe sex in 2 chapters. So, thank you for not being overly poetic and focusing on character and story development. Also, thank you for accurately writing about veterans and using proper terms. So many authors get it wrong. You again shone through, and veteran to veteran thank you.
The story itself wasn't amazing with pop culture references, history, and biblical stories woven in to create a spectacular heroic antihero. The supporting characters were as strong as the main character and, in some cases, stronger. It was also extremely surprising and refreshing to read a male author who made a supporting female character into a major bad ass without objectifying her. Kudos, I can not wait to continue to read your work.
I wish I could give half stars, I'd rate this about a 3.5. The story was a wild ride. Denny created characters that were interesting and different. Ho took many tropes of urban fantasy and played with then. He was often tongue-in-cheek about what was happening in the story. At one point two of the characters talked about how unrealistic the car chase they were in the middle of seemed to them--like something from a movie. I was kept entertained. The shout out to Heinlein worked really well for me. I was distracted several times by grammatical errors and typographical errors. These brought the book down the half star from four. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
I don't even know where to begin. This book aligns with my beliefs in the metaphysical as well as having realistic characters, nasty urban situations and believable relationships. I find myself in the sad situation of waiting less than patiently for the next book of this awesome writer.
While the overarching concept is intriguing, the mechanics are clunky. Overly descriptive in fight scenes, and repetitive with those descriptions. The characters aren't paper thin, and with some development and work will be extremely deep and.intriguing. The editing is atrocious, and that alone made me set the book aside several times.
Not normally my preferred genre, but gave it a shot just for fun and genuinely enjoyed it. Finished it in two days, didn't want to put it down, couldn't wait to see what happened next. Kept a consistent fast pace. I will definitely be reading more from Denny!
A very army- gun- and man-jokes heavy story with supernatural elements which was the bit I enjoyed. I wish it were a bit longer so the story was more developed and there were fewer music and movie references because it became tedious after a while. I liked the FMC Gretchen and his friend Jammer - Nick not so much, ha!
Very creative including the sword guarding the garden of eden. A little too much profanity and Christian bashing for me. Another book or two and Mr. Denny should be outstanding.
Fun story with a entertaining twist or two. It is not very deep. Probably not a long list of literary awards in the future. But it is a satisfying little piece of brain candy that I enjoyed over a couple of rainy evenings.
Fun read. Good characters developed well. Good story line. Plenty of action. I really liked Nick and his soulmate ninja girlfriend. Good supporting cast as well. Looking forward to seeing more of them.
This is my first book that I have read by this author and damn I was so impressed. The characters were great and the storyline was fabulous. I'm getting ready to start book two!!
Very fun read. The early chapters got a little annoying with the non stop talk about sex, but after that toned down it was a great. Would have been a fit movie for something like SPIKE TV. Will read the other two books. Jammer hands down made the book for me.
Just like deadpool. Highly inappropriate, just the right side of crass, fun, fast paced and did I mention inappropriate!! Thoroughly hoping there is more to come.
Lots of campy fun in the fan fiction to the "Supernatural" show sort of a way. Very entertaining. Cool fight scenes. (The author's military experience really shows).
