A nun, a demon and a ghost walk into a bar...

In Good Witch Hunting a demon is accused of murder and it's a good thing, well at least for Stevie who has been quite bored since she investigated her last case.  This was a fun episode with plenty of twists and good humor. I enjoyed meeting Coop, Trixie, and a familiar named Livingston. Things are complicated by a snowstorm in Ebenezer Falls but that doesn't stop this motley crew.

The story behind Coop and Trixie was a fascinating one and could easily have been its own book. I think from a series perspective this was one of the best books to date. The pacing, humor and storyline quickly pulled me in and I devoured the audiobook. I loved the witty humor, snark and references to old sitcoms.

Hollie Jackson continues her narration and does a stellar job giving each character their own unique voice and captures their personality. Her voice for Belfrey, Stevie's familiar made me insane for a little while. Now I don't know whether she toned the voice down or I've simply accepted it, but Belfrey and I got along just fine this listen. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

Good Witch Hunting by Dakota Cassidy

Book 7 of the Witchless in Seattle series. Should be read in order.
The ex-witch, amateur sleuth, and her ghost companions are again in the middle of the small town death investigation. Twists, turns, and improbable results are standard fare.
Lots of snark, references to old sitcoms and phrases make up the snicker worthy dialog.
Amusing and irreverent. Girl power.
Probably the best inthe series in terms of pacing and character building.

The seventh book in this series but this one seems to be more about introducing the characters for a new series. That isn't a bad thing but I felt that roles of some of my favourite characters were limited and I missed them. The mystery in this story involves Sister Trixie Lavender an ex-nun and Coop her absolutely beautiful partner in their Tattoo Shop, who just happens to be a demon.

I was so happy to see another Witchless in Seattle story had come out and that is why it is so much worse when the story was disappointing.

Stevie, our favorite powerless witch and spirit-hearing madam, is awakened by her awesome spy-guy Crispin Alistair Winterbottom, or Win for short, when he suddenly has a revelation that the person who murdered him had a very distinct tattoo. Good thing a new tattoo artist just moved into town and is setting up shop down the street from Stevie’s Madam Zoltar 2.0.

Stevie goes to visit and introduce herself to her new neighbors and surprise, surprise, they find a dead body in the storage room and no one knows how he got there. Yes, it is a murder mystery series but it was just too…convenient.

The new neighbors might have been more interesting if they were more of a mystery but the story description already tells us that one is an ex-nun and the other is a demon. They also have a pet owl/demon who spoke with an Irish accent, just to mix it up a bit. It would have added something to the story if we were unaware of Coop being a demon. She is supermodel gorgeous and talks a bit awkwardly like English isn’t her first language and she is unused to American slang. If we had to wonder and guess why she acted so strangely, that would have added to this storyline and the interest. And just as these new characters were getting interesting, we find that the new neighbors, Coop and Trixie and their owl buddy, won’t be sticking around town after this story.

I had several issues with this story starting with the fact that the entire thing happened during a blizzard where Stevie kept going out to get clues driving between her house and town, which is normally a 10 minute drive and now was taking over an hour. Hint, might not be a good idea to go out driving in a blizzard and who did she think was going to be out and about besides her.

She also didn’t figure out this mystery. It was more like she kept falling into the killer’s path and getting knocked around. Until in the end she finally got in the killer’s way and got a confession to buy some time in hopes that someone would come out in the blizzard and save her.

Most annoyingly was what is happening with the romance between Stevie and Win. Yes, she is a witch and he is a ghost and that makes dating harder. But in the last novel, which was from Win’s point of view, several times we hear Win’s unfinished thoughts that he can’t tell Stevie of his feelings for her since he hasn’t figured out how to return to the living world full-time (he has possessed a few bodies for the short-time) and it is not fair to make her wait. Yet the romance Stevie had in the first few stories with the local coffeehouse owner was quickly nixed so that we could focus on Win and Stevie. In this novel, Stevie is obsessed with her jealousy of Win’s former fiance, how Win must be spending time on plane-limbo with other women while she sleeps and how he will never return her affection.

I had thought that we long ago established their star-crossed lover romance and hashed out their strong feelings for each other. Really, why else is he trying to get back to this plane of existence? Just to use that wood fire pizza oven?

This is book 7 in the series and we are far enough along that we shouldn’t still be dragging in teenage-agnst of “does he like me like I like him?” They had a stronger relationship and understanding of the other’s feeling in the earlier stories.

In the last story, I was disappointed that Win didn’t give us more about how he plans on returning to the living but this one flopped on so many levels and I am truly disappointed. Tell me, can a book series “jump the shark?”

Stars: 5 Narration 5 Story 5

Probably my favorite so far in this ‘must read in order as to not be hopelessly lost’ series, Stevie’s been rather bored and at loose ends since the last case. But, always be careful what you wish for because things are seriously heating up. Despite the snow, our witch and her familiar Belfry and her ghostly ex-spy companion Win are tracking a memory. See, Win has remembered something about his murder – and it leads to ex-nun Trixie, now running a tattoo parlor and her sidekick, a demon who, as one would expect, is accused of murder. When you add in the snowstorm and the usual smart-alec rejoinders mixed with a healthy dose of old sitcom references and plenty of missteps, backstories from Trixie and Coop and the usual interplay with Stevie and the new familiar Livingston – the action (and giggles) never stop.

Packed with information and solidifying the old characters into their familiar patterns, with a few twists, and the introduction of the new mystery to solve and the development of the new characters of Trix, Coop and Livingston – this is probably the most densely packed story in terms of plot – and the pacing manages to keep everything moving forward without losing any key elements. Sure these are fun and funny stories, and the ‘girl power’ vibe from Stevie is wholly on point here, but they are perfectly suited for an escape: an escape into situations that are utterly unworldly and simply fun for that. Characters are plausible and likable even in the most improbable situations, and there is never a time when the story or the action are without some humor.

Narration for this story is provided by Hollie Jackson who is perfectly suited to this series: she’s got Stevie with her own vocal quirks, Belfry who has a ‘unique’ presence guaranteed to draw attention, and her struggling for control sense that comes through with Win as the ‘experienced’ man in the group are clever and come through clearly in the story. New characters all come with their own sound and delivery – each adding to and building on the character as written, and are easy to pick out in the often fast-paced dialogue and interactions. I love Jackson’s ability to keep each character distinct and unique, and the sense that she is enjoying her performance as much, if not more than my experience listening is clearly present and adds yet another layer to the experience.

I received an AudioBook copy of the title from Tantor Audio for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

ARC - I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest
Stevie is a little bored.
She is itching to get her hands on a juice mystery.
Beware of what you wish for!
Soon enough, Stevie and the gang are once again involved in another murder.
You will have to read the book to found about about the little twist in this book.
The storytelling + the character's build were awesome!
It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book!
I can't wait for the next book in the new series!

4 Stars... Out of this entire series, this book was a bit lacking for me... I needed a little more of Stevie's witty humor and the mystery was a bit boring... However, I still enjoyed the comradery between the characters, the growing romantic tension between Stevie and Win, and the introduction of Trixie and Coop was quite intriguing (I will definitely be reading their series!)… Overall, it was still a fun and entertaining read with this crazy cast of characters and their beloved furry friends:)

*** Possible Spoilers ***

I gave this book five stars not because I liked it - I didn't - but because I think the author did a good job creating what she wanted created. Frankly for me it was a bit of a struggle not to DNF it. The problem was I didn't check the keywords on Goodreads before selecting this one. I did check them on the library website but I've learned from past experience they use a very limited number of keywords. Had I checked Goodreads I would have realized this was a cozy mystery. Occasionally I do read a book from that sub genre, but I was not attempting to do so in this case. I think it was the title I found appealing. It reminded me a title Terry Pratchett might have used. Frankly I find this sub-genre too syrupy for my taste and this one was particularly cloying.

So, who is the target audience who might enjoy this book. I think it's probably aimed at Gen-Z or late-stage millennial females. For example, there is one passage I can't quote because I can't remember it exactly and will have to paraphrase, which asks the question, 'how can anyone survive without Netflix?' Well let's see. Netflix has somewhere in the order of 275 million subscribers out of a world population around 8 billion. So that would be 7.725 billion who manage to do quite well without it. While I find the assertion that Netflix - and certain other things taken for granted by Gen-Z as essential - to be annoying, I understand most in the target audience would nod in wonderment at the deprivation some people endure. One reviewer described some of the dialog as 'sassy'. Again, for young people that may be entirely correct.

In general, this book has a mystery - solved more by accident than design - coupled with elements of the occult, a menagerie of animals, a touch of romance and 'girl power'. The pacing is adequate and there is even a tiny bit of character development. I think it is well suited for a target audience of Gen-Z urban females - at least those capable of reading - who like cozy mysteries.

Looking for a fun, fast-paced paranormal read that will leave you with a smug smile and desire for more?

Look no further than Dakota Cassidy’s Witchless in Seattle mystery series. Good Witch Hunting is the 7th in the series. Each book can stand on its own, but reading them in order is much more enjoyable! Don’t miss the references to old sitcoms, song words and phases. Her characters are well developed and fun. She fills her books with hilarious antics, snarky conversations, puns and plot twists. The setting calls to me and I want to visit!

Dakota has created a society of witches, ghosts, pets, friends, and a former nun in Ebenezer Falls, WA, a Seattle suburb. Heroine Stevie Cartright is a wrongly accused/stripped of her powers witch. Along with her gang --- especially the yummy Brtish spy ghost --- clairvoyant Stevie solves local murders. Usually mayhem and madness follow -- or precede!

We meet new characters, former nun Trixie Lavender and her partner, Coop. They will be featured in a new series, Nun of Your Business. They are accused of murder. Stevie and the gang use whatever means necessary to clear them.

Dakota Cassidy is a clever and creative author. Her books will leave you laughing and satisfied of time well spent reading. I recommend her other books and series, too.

What happens when an ex-nun befriends a demon?

When Win recovers a memory about his death, involving a hand with an odd tattoo on it holding the gun that may have been the one to put a bullet through Win’s heart, Stevie visits a brand new tattoo parlor in town to research the tattoo. When a dead body turns up, Stevie is more than a little afraid of one of the two female tattoo artists. She has odd, stilted mannerisms, and she seems to have violent tendencies.

The kooky, paranormal fun continues in this sprightly seventh book in the Witchless in Seattle series. This time around, there are several mysteries to solve, and one of them involves Stevie’s frightening encounters with demons straight from hell.

As always, there is plenty of laugh-out-loud humor along with the murder and mayhem, mainly due to the interactions between the wonderful cast of continuing characters, including Stevie, Win, Arkady, Belfry, Whisky the dog and Strike the turkey, as well as various denizens of Ebenezer Falls, Washington.

The audiobook version that I listened to is performed by the terrific voice talent, Hollie Jackson, who narrates the entire series, and it is a joy to listen to. She does an outstanding job with male and female characters, both low- and high-pitched timbers, and every kind of foreign accent, especially Win’s British accent and Arkady’s Russian accent.

I see that I get to be the first person to give this book a one-star rating. Yay?

I'm baffled as to why this has such a high rating. I assume it's because, if you've read this far into the series, you're committed enough to enjoy it even those it's hopelessly, horribly stupid.

Here we go...

1. An ex-nun and a demon? Really? I'm all for the paranormal aspects of the book, but the mysteries mainly revolve human crimes. I don't appreciate the sudden departure.

2. And really, there was no reason to involve those two characters other than a way for the author to set up the next cozy mystery series she's starting. So this whole book was basically trying to drum up reader interest.

3. Within half an hour of meeting these strange people, Stevie's putting her neck on the line and lying to the police to try to save them? Nope, not buying it.

4. The entire first half of the book contained nothing that was necessary to solve the crime. Filler. And crappy filler, might I add.

This book was so crappy I don't know if I'll even bother to continue on with the series, even though I do really want to know what happens next with Win.

The mystery was well written and I expected some twists to the plots and story line. Stevie is experiencing a snow storm and a mystery with new shopkeepers of a tattoo parlor. As she greets the new shopkeepers the mystery starts with the finding of the body. Meet someone who is different from the average person who finds the body. As the plot thickens and the snow keeps coming down we have Stevie who gets a bit stumped because she has no idea who dun it.
Meet Trixie, Coop and the owl, Sebastian who talks , they were surprised to find a dead body in their new place of business. Officer Nelson or one of his unusual names given to him by Stevie is still humorous and interesting. Win and Arkady play good parts to the mystery and the ending is awesome!
I highly recommend this book and the series!

Another great Stevie and gang who-dunnit!
Winter comes full force to Eb Falls, along with 2 new residents and another dead body! As the new business owners of Inkerbelle's Tattoo parlor are unpacking and meeting Stevie, they quite literally stumble over the body of their landlord Hank. No broken hearts about his demise, however the new ladies are of course getting the blame! From the mystery of who killed Hank, to who ARE these new residents of Eb Falls, Stevie and her crew have got their work cut out for them. Smack in the middle of a blizzard no less!
Many laugh out loud moments and great new characters!

As always her books are funny and cute, I just have to vent about one of her air head statements. Stevie is thinking abut her fellow business owners on the street, one of them being a sewing machine repair shop when she thinks "Does anyone even own a sewing machine anymore?" Oh, girl I belong to a group that meets once a month to teach and learn sewing machine embroidery since 2000. I also belong to a local quilt guild that has donated over 250 home made quilts this year. All of these people own at least 1 machine and I personally own 14. Making clothes might becoming a lost art, but creating with a sewing machine will always keep a repair shop in business.

Another great story for Stevie stuck in Ebeneezer Falls. Lots of high wit, snark and hijinks! I had plenty of fun reading what Stevie and the gang are up to. Good Witch Hunting didn't fail to keep me smiling. There are some new characters that will get their own spin off series. Can't wait to see more of them. This is the seventh in the series. It is best to have read the previous books in this series.

Another hit

I loved the 2 new characters . They were a great addition to the Eb Falls family. And I'm happy to see they will have their own spin off, although without Win and Srevie. At least I think k so. I guess I will just have to read it! The storyline was awesome and the bad guys wholly unexpected. No spoilers here. Except to say when oh when will Win be real? If it doesn't even occur to a nun and a daemon to help with the situation, then whom?

Ah, my favorite characters

I love, love, love the Witchless books. I laugh out loud at Stevie's escapades ans swoon over Winterbotton, International Man of Mystery. This book got me through a few bad Crohn's hours and I so appreciate that. Now to try to be patient and wait for the next one. Thanks, Dakota!

This one really missed the mark for me. Nothing really happened in the entire book. Stevie is feeling a bit lost in her personal life and I feel art is reflecting reality - Ms. Cassidy is floundering a bit as a writer. There were scenes that made me laugh out loud, but nothing really moved the larger storyline of the series along. I want to know what’s in store for Stevie and Winterbutt 😂

Never judge a book by it's cover

Ah, Good vs Evil, the age old story, only I don't think it's ever had this twist. In a town with only one known supernatural, what happens when two more arrive...why murder, of course. It's a wild ride as we take one turn after another before we get to the bottom of this one.
