AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

In this large and beautifully illustrated picture book, more than 20 animal migrations are highlighted and discussed. Each animal--from caribou to whooping cranes--is given a page with an explanation of their migration written in simple poetic prose. The final migration discussed is that of humans and the many reasons we travel.

My son is a huge nature lover and we both enjoyed reading this book together. I loved the wide variety of animals discussed--some I had never heard of!--and its fascinating to learn the great lengths many of these species travel every single year. The illustrations in this book are really great and it will be a hit with younger animal lovers. The style of the words makes it an especially fun book to read aloud.

This beautifully illustrated book discovers a wide variety of precise species of animal and considers the journeys - through migration, hibernation or beyond - that they undertake in their lives either once or multiple times. I was fortunate enough to be able to make use of this picture book on school placement alongside the science subject of classifying living things and their habitats, but the book could link effortlessly to world geography and concepts of place, space and distance; world history and how people's behaviours and industrialisation have affected the habitats and lifecycles of animals; PSHE through the final section in the book comparing such animal world travel and habitat change, plus its reasons, with human migration and similar reasons frequently underlying it. I found children loved the level of detail provided about each species: they range from european eels and humpback whales to monarch butterflies and Galapagos land iguanas, each accompanied by a variety of geographical and scientific facts and graphically designed illustrations. The book provides some beautiful modelling for pupils to create their own similarly styled species guide, accompanied by illustrations of their own creation and imagination. It's widely documented that there are 7.7 million animal species considered by scientists to exist worldwide, yet humans have only formally identified under 2 million of them: maybe this book could stimulate a future career in pupils to discover and name some of the many creatures our planet has yet to reveal to us.

Lots of unusual animals. Minimal but quite lyrical text. Double page spread for each animal allows muted illustrations to give a sense of movement. Aimed at 5 - 7 years olds (KS1).
