Okay, I'm pretty sure 99% of you Little Barnacles have never heard of this series and therefore do not give a fish about what my most fascinating thoughts on this particular instalment might be. And I must admit that:
① A Deadly 3-Star Neither Very Bad Nor Very Good I Don't Know What the Bloody Shrimp to Do with you Book Rating (D3SNVB NVGIDKWtBllodyStDwyBR™) isn't the best incentive to read this crappy non review. ← Since I audaciously changed my rating as I was writing this non-review, this first (and quite captivating) point no longer applies. Life sucks and stuff.
② Neither is the book cover. I mean, it kind of looks like I designed it myself. And that, in case you were wondering, is a very scary thought indeed. I might be beautifully omnipotent and omniscient and omni-pretty everything but I can't draw for shit fish. So QED and stuff.
③ This is instalment #8 in this series so, really, who the shrimp cares about reading a review for it (apart from the two—let's be bold, let's say three—barnacles who are also following this series)? I mean, most of you know absolutely naught/zilch/nada/rien about the setting/characters/arc/whatever, so why would your waste your inestimably precious time here? Wait. It just now occurred to me that 99% of you (99% of the 99% who have never heard of this series, that is) have no lives and therefore nothing better to do than read my ever-so compelling musings here. Hey! It looks like I might have a watchfully attentive (albeit somewhat reluctant) audience after all!
You see this guy a lot around here, I know. What can I say, he's my Heinously Vicious Mascot (HVM™) and stuff.
Okay, I think we all know how much I positively luuuurve Disgustingly Decaf Stuff (DDS™) ← this is a slightly sarcastic comment, just so you know. I mean, what is more repulsive than non-X rated, non-violent, non-chop chop chop, non-gory, non-cunningly Machiavellian, non-gloriously dark stuff, I ask you? Not many things, that's what. Maybe barnacles? Yeah, probably. No offense and stuff, my Tiny Decapods, but you have to admit you are not the most attractive bunch. But I ever so slightly digress. So. At the risk of shocking you to a painfully excruciating death, I have to say that this little series belongs to the much-dreaded paranormal mystery genre, and is therefore—quite logically, I might add—of the Horribly Light Variety (HLV™). Hold your gasps please, you haven't heard the worst of it yet.Not only that, but there is also some *looks over her shoulder to make sure no one is around* *whispers in the tiniest of voices* Horrendously Appalling Ongoing Romance Crap (HAORC™) in the series.
Told you you should have held your barnacled gasps.
Yes, I am afraid the abominable truth this is: this series is both frightfully light and viciously flowing with lovey dovey BS. And I lurves it anyway. And I wouldn't miss an instalment for the world Mariana's Trench. And, yes, I am aware that my reputation is now thoroughly ruined. And I don't bloody shrimping give a damn fish about it. Ha. Okay, so I don't give a fish but I still feel a teensy little bit self-conscious here. I mean, this seriously cramps my bookshelf style and stuff. In my defense, I have to say that even though Deadwood qualifies as Revoltingly Cozy Paranormal Mystery Material (RCPMM™), it's not as abhorrently PG-13 as you might think. I mean, there is quite a decent amount of delicious cursing, some relatively graphic sex—but not nearly enough of it, much to the desperation of Violet, Our Leading Lady of the Kinky Purple Boots (OLLofKPB™)—, appropriately creepy stuff and even some exquisitely violent, bloody stuff once in a while. Plus, there is a most delightful array of bitches and assholes, which is always a plus. Light this series might be, but Cuddly Fluffy Care Bear Lands Ew Ew Ew (CFCBLEEE™) it definitely ain't not. See, it's not ALL bad, and my case is not as desperately hopeless as you undoubtedly thought at first. Pretty great news, huh? Now would be a good time to be glad and rejoice, I think.
Nice. Watch out for whiplash, though. Dr Prawn is currently out of town and, in his absence, I might have to behead you to ease the pain and stuff. Something tells me you wouldn't be game for that, strangely enough.
Now. Time for some long-overdue rehashing (for those poor souls who sadly missed the previous episodes crappy non reviews). One of the coolest things about this series is its heroine. Why, you ask? Because she is no krill-brained, 20-something twit. She is ancientwell over 30, the single mother of twins and has a real life, a real job and real problems. I kid you not. She also has a talent for saying stuff she shouldn't (preferably at the most inappropriate of times) and lives to serveaggravate. Add to that her innate ability to get herself in the most inextricable messes interesting situations and her paranormal executioner side-job, and you get your little selves a most fetchingly appealing female lead.
The other coolest thing about this series is its ever-colorful cast of eccentrics, nutcases and irritating asses (dirty old men and Abe Lincoln wannabes for the win!). The other other coolest thing about this series is its Hilariously Hilarious Ha Ha Ha Factor (HHHHHF™) and its consequently Hilariously Hilarious Ha Ha Ha and Most Times Beautifully Absurd Dialogues (HHHHHaMTBAD™). Also, in this particular instalment: genetically diverse littermates (of the Super Bitch kind), third-eye chakras (blindfolded, not stirred blocked), Acidic Assholes and Bitter Buttheads, the exchange of bodily fluids with tall mediums (or lack thereof), Jack Frost's freezing balls, Satan's concubine and the unexpected effects of pumpkin scent on the flow of blood to the penis. And Elvis the pet chicken, forever and always.
» And the moral of this Good Thing I Didn't Have Anything to Say about this Book when I Started Writing this Crappy Non Review Otherwise We might Have Been Here another Decade or Two Crappy Non Review (GTIDHAtSatBwISWtCNROWMHBHaDoTCNR™) is: want to be highly (if *whispers* mindlessly) entertained? Want to laugh your pincers off? Want me to bloody fishing spell out what's left for you to do?
As exciting as the previous instalments this one might not have been. But as hilarious as the previous instalments this one certainly was. Ergo, survive this series shall. Possibly.
I tried looking for a "shrimp of approval" gif but couldn't find one. This is outrageous! And frightfully discriminating! Why would harebrained, lazy as fish, wimpish seals be the only ones authorized to approve of stuff?! This cannot be! This will not do! I shall not let this pass! As in all things, shrimps shall prevail!
➽ Full Slightly Nefarious Beings Enjoy Reading Disgustingly Decaf Stuff Too Sometimes Crappy Non Review (SNBERDDSTSCNR™) to come.
I love this series. It's quirky, it's snarky, it's funny. But if I'm honest this book feels like a victory lap. Not all that much happens. It's still entertaining despite that. These characters are great fun. Honestly, Ann Charles could make her shopping list entertaining. So 4 Stars just because I loved it even though it's really a 3 Star book.
Rattling the Heat in Deadwood is Ann Charles' eighth book in this amazingly funny, sexy paranormal mystery series and she really does turn up the heat in this one! With Ann's sharp wit and talent for story telling, once again Violet's Deadwood springs to life across each page as the tensions and bodies pile up around her. The heat is on and Violet will need all her friends, and of course Doc, to see her though this time! This is a series that I hope never ends!
Ann Charles did it again. Rattling the Heat in Deadwood does not disappoint. I can't wait for book #9. Violet and her crazy cast of characters dig deeper into the paranormal. I like reading about the characters so much that I'm disappointed when the book ends. There were so many hilarious moments in this book. I love this series. It's fun and funny. #RATTLINGtheHEAT
It felt so good to be back with Violet, Doc, Cooper, Natalie, Aunt Zoe and all the of Violet’s family & friends! Love reading about all of her adventures in Deadwood & her continuing romance with Doc. Only bad part about the book? I finished it now & have to try to patiently wait for the next one! Thank you Ann Charles for all the fun!
Snollyguster! Cornelius is living upstairs at Calamity Jane Realty. Is the hell hole he found in the basement a Trouble magnet? Let's see. . .Violet's parents have invited themselves to dinner to meet her boyfriend Doc. Bitch sister Susan is trying to steal said BF. Vi's boss has put up another sexy billboard featuring Violet that has her rival Tiffany spitting bullets. Coop is still Violet's client and is still rejecting all the houses she finds for him to buy. Her nemesis Hawke is still trying to arrest her for murder. Violet's nightmares are getting worse. Ex Rex is still a major pain-in-the-ass. Ditto Elvis. Supernatural threats in Deadwood are getting more dire. So, business as usual! I love this series. Each book is better than the one before.
This was book 8 in the "Deadwood" series. Violet "Sparky" Parker is once again under fire she is being accused of another murder and she has to clear her name. With the gang having her back Violet has to work hard at her second job and with all the other things going on in her life. Her relationship with Doc continues to grow with her parents coming to town and her she devil of a sister Susan. Det. Hawke is still convinced of her guilt in the murder of Mrs. Wolfe and believes he just needs to wait for some evidence to be processed before he can arrest her. Cooper and Violet continue there back and fourth as he is assigned to her and neither of them likes it. Because of houseguest Doc is unable to sneak in and out of her room. Violet is also dealing with her scheming coworkers Ray and Tiffany doing all they can to steal her clients and cause trouble at work for her. This book seemed to me spookier than the others it had a lot going on in it. This was a really good book this series continues to get better and better. I love all of the kooky weird characters in this series. I also love that Ms. Charles continues to use humor also with mystery. I also love the narration as I listened to this book on audio. I am looking forward to listening to the next book in this series.
I simply adore this series. Violet, Doc, Harvey, Cooper and Natalie - what a terrific gang of characters. The slapstick humor is perfect to relieve the tension from all the crazy paranormal things happening in Violet's life. I love the romance between Violet and Doc. And the secondary romance between Natalie and Cooper as well as Zoe and Reid. I look forward to returning to Deadwood and rejoining the crazy antics of the entire gang.
And let's not forget Cornelius. Now he's a real character...and a kook too.
First off, between this book and The Wild Turkey Tango, I have to wonder just what kind of shenanigans go on in the Charles' household when extended family gets together? And how do I get an invitation? This latest installment of the Deadwood saga does not disappoint. Violet is able to get into trouble without even trying. Cooper is developing into a more sympathetic character while his partner is getting more irritating. Too bad Violet has to behave. Well-written, fast paced, funny, intriguing and, at the end, surprising. I don't want to ruin it, but I will quote Captain Janeway and say that the twist in the story is based on something that "gives me a headache." It's all good though. I can't wait for the next one!
The heat is on for Violet in this installment of the Deadwood Mystery series. All my favorites are back in this fast paced, action packed, laugh out loud mystery! I can’t get enough of Violet & Doc. I’m looking forward to more and more in this series. Keep them coming!
Violet and her crew are back for another bloodcurdling adventure in the eighth installment of Ann Charles' Deadwood series! With each passing installment I get more drawn into the mystery and the lives of Violet and her friends and family. Each book is more exciting than its predecessor. I can't tell you how many times I've gasped and jumped while reading this series, and this latest book was no exception! What is Violet, really? What is her role in all the evil things happening in Deadwood? Why is the underworld so intent on stopping her!? Will Natalie ever get together with Coop!? Inquiring minds want to know! Without giving anything anyway, this book delves further into the history of Violet's deadly family ties, with many laughs, scares and things that go bump in the night along the way. Violet is of course accompanied by her usual motley crew of choice, including Doc, Harvey, Natalie, Cooper, and Cornelius, incorporating much hilarity into the mix! Highly recommend!!
Another great installment in a stellar series! Ann Charles' writing style is just so lively and engaging that it makes these books so hard to put down. While Rattling the Heat is a little lighter on the action front than previous books in the series, there are certainly some very important developments that took place in this one like Violet gaining a deeper understanding of her newfound role(s) in the paranormal universe and taking her newly forged relationships (namely with Doc and Cooper) to the next level. Not to mention that with this book, one of the great mysteries of the series was solved as several other puzzles made their first appearance. The great thing about this series is that with for all flaws, Violet is still just so damn likable! And Ann Charles writes everything so brilliantly that you feel like you are taking a wild ride into The Twilight Zone with a friend rather than just another book character...
Snollyguster! This book in the series had me shirking duties to read whenever possible. I laughed and wished like hell I could be around that kitchen table with this group of friends riding out a snowstorm. Really looking forward to picking up the next book in the series.

This is such a fun series! Ann Charles is such a great writer you feel like you’re IN the story instead of just reading the words. Can’t get enough of Spooky Parker.
Getting more and more exciting Everything is coming together for Violet and her family and friends as things start to heat up. This is a fun and adventurous read/listen. I highly recommend.
Violet is up against it in this episode. Her parents are coming for a visit, specifically to meet her new boyfriend the one her sister Susan, aka the Devils whore, has told them about. Added to which Det Hawke is still convinced of her guilt in the murder of Mrs Wolfe and believes he just needs to wait for some evidence to be processed before he can arrest her. Until then Det Cooper has been made responsible for her good behaviour which pleases neither him nor Violet. So she and Aunt Zoe end up with an unwanted houseguests meaning among other things no more sleepovers for Doc which also means no more of Doc sneaking into Violets bed when the twins are asleep. Add in the usual drama with Ray and Tiffany doing all they can to steal her clients and make mischief at work it's just not a good week for Violet. All this and Dominic is hovering wanting Violet to do him a job for him. You would think nothing else could go wrong but Violet will need all her friends and family to get through what is in store for her. This series keeps getting better and better, very spooky and scary but with a lot of humour, love and affection to balance it out. And it looks like the scares are just beginning.
As much as I love this series and these characters this one fell a little flat for me. I like the way Doc and Violet's relatonship is progressing although there are way too many roadblocks to alone time. I really enjoy Aunt Zoe and Ried's interaction and I hope they continue on. I can't wait for Cooper and Natalie to get together. And I expecially enjoy the paranormal element in each book. That is why I started reading them in the first place. This one had too little of the big bad, in fact it all seemed like a set up for the next in the series. Then the whole Hawke storyline is getting ridiculous. I also get a little tired of Violet's parents being so ridiculosly one sided in Susan's direction. I also know Clint has his own series of books which I also enjoy but a little crossover would be nice. One last gripe, I dislike when an author gets stuck on a word and overuses it. In this case it was smirk. Everyone smirked all of the time. Let's find a different word to descrbe people's facial expressions. A good editior should pick up on things like that.
The fun and action never stops in Deadwood when Violet is around! Rattling the Heat in Deadwood has got to be my favorite in the series so far! It is filled with so much fun that will have you holding your stomach from laughing so hard. The things that poor Violet gets herself wrapped up in is enough to make a grown person drink…Oh wait! Anybody up for a shot of tequila? Yes, Violet’s choice will definitely help calm her down but I’m not sure about Doc or poor Cooper lol. Ahhh poor good looking Coop who definitely has his hands full with the Violet in this addition to the series. This is one series that you can be sure of being entertained, have laughs a minute, see into the romance of Doc and Violet and follow along with a mystery that unfolds with more answers to so many questions that I have had while reading the previous books. Oh Ann Charles definitely has delivered another phenomenal story to us. This author sure does know how to write a bang up book that keeps us coming back for more! Please don’t hesitate to read this amazing series. You won’t be sorry…really!
I just finished book #8 in Ann Charles Deadwood Mystery series, and it certainly did not disappoint. Rattling the Heat in Deadwood finds Violet Parker in several more predicaments, from her career as a Realtor, her other, darker calling, and her family and love life. This novel answers several questions that past novels have raised, while beginning to direct Violet down the path to her destiny as her circle is coming together. This novel pulled me in, and took me through many emotions. In particular, I had to fight back my laughter during a particularly entertaining family dinner. Ms Charles does a wonderful job weaving a story that combines mystery, suspense, romance and wraps in up with a generous serving of humor. If you have not read any of the Deadwood Mystery series, I do recommend starting at the beginning and going along for the ride that is the life of Violet "Spooky" Parker. Also known as Rocky Parker and Sparky. This is one heroine that many of us can relate to on some level.
Okay. This time around, Violet is...well, she's her usual hot-headed self and she has Coop's new partner breathing down her neck because he's SURE she's involved in several of the unsolved murders that keep happening around Deadwood. Which is not incorrect, as it turns out, but Hawke doesn't have the entire picture. Violet might be involved, but not the way he thinks.
Regardless, Violet's temper keeps getting her in deeper trouble with Hawke, Cooper is jumping at shadows of the ghostly variety (which is hilarious in its own way because Cooper is so darn stoic most of the time), Doc is fantastically supportive (as always), and there's a certain charmingly slimy someone who has his eye on Aunt Zoe.
Just another day in Deadwood for the Executioner, right?
Monsters, mayhem, and detectives with bulldog-like tendencies. *thumbs up*
If not for bad luck, I'm not sure Violet would have any.
Her sister (aka Devil's whore) has told her parents all about Doc...and they're coming for a visit. Not one to bow down from a challenge from either Coop or Detective Hawke - who seems to be doing everything possible to pin a murder on her - Violet goes about doing what she does best: find trouble when not looking. Nothing says "great book" like finishing it at 3am when you have to get up at 6:30 for work!
I cannot believe how fantastic the books are after so many have been released with the same characters. And to think - the only reason I picked this one up is because its setting is in my home state - mere miles from one of my aunt's houses and features places I've been. I've since share her books with friends and family, far and wide, and they too can't get enough of the Ann Charles books.
Yea! The 8th Deadwood book is out! Another laugh out loud, fun filled book in the Deadwood series. I’m not a huge paranormal fan but Violet’s stories are also very funny. This is the 8th book and I can hardly wait for the 9th. In this one, Coop is trying to help Violet stay out of jail as Detective Hawke (the moron) is trying to arrest her for murder. There’s lot of other stuff going on that keeps poor Violet hopping, including her parents showing up to meet Doc and her evil sister tagging along with them. I recommend starting with the first book – Nearly Departed in Deadwood and reading them all – if you’ve already read the first seven, you’ll enjoy this one as much as the others. It's available in paperback, and as an ebbok for kindle, nook, and kobo. #RATTLINGtheHEAT #AnnWCharles
This is a fabulous book! There is a little bit of everything that readers of the Deadwood series have come to expect and love – mystery, humor, romance, and a definite “creepy” factor. Violet finds herself being threatened by mysterious notes and packages. Are they from a human or otherworldly sender? She also agonizes over her parents’ first meeting with Doc (Will they chase him off? Will he like them?), and seeks out a murderer to keep herself from being suspect number one. The cast of hilarious and/or scary supporting characters is there to add elements of frustration and confusion, with poor Violet ending up in funny and sometimes embarrassing situations. The ending is satisfying, until it jumps into another cliffhanger. Hurry up with the next Deadwood book, Ann!
Ann Charles never seems to disappoint with her wonderful stories, and each book in the Deadwood Mystery Series just keeps getting better and better, this book being no exception. Violet, Doc, Natalie, Cooper, and the rest of the gang will have you laughing, crying, looking over your shoulder for ghosts, and keep you on the edge of your seat through the entire book. Violet's antics just keep drawing her in deeper and deeper into her role as an Executioner and now /Timekeeper while Doc and the rest of the gang try to keep Violet out of trouble with the law and help to keep her alive while she deals with otherworldly things. All this leads to another great Deadwood Mystery Series read, and my favorite of the series so far.
Short review. In keeping in the Violet Parker fashion of the paranormal, we find our Scharfrichter, trying to learn about becoming an executioner and being a Time Keeper in her own, reluctant way. Between being a single mother of twins, her job, being chased and hounded by the local police version of Rockford, and fantasizing and actually having coitus with her boyfriend, Violet actually does chase some ghosts and demons.
This is a fun little series, it's easy to read, and Ann Charles has proven that she can be unpredictable as the story keeps stretching out to what will be the 11th book coming out around Christmas 2019.
Now it's on to book 9. Why, because it's there.
I rate this 3 stars
Rattling the Heat in Deadwood By Ann Charles Book 8 in the Deadwood Mysteries
WOW!! I don't know how Ann Charles manages it, but every single book in this series just gets better and better!! Our favorite Scharfricter is in over her favorite purple boots in trouble, and the rest of the gang is busting their butts trying to help her out! The characters, are just amazing! They are like old friends now, and I can not wait to revisit them again! This book is impossible to put down, and features hilarious angst, a crazy family dinner and everyones favorite detective shows us a little more of himself. If you want humor, supernatural craziness and some serious steam, this is the book for you!
Book after book Ann surpasses herself! Another must read from Ann Charles. The gang in Deadwood have their hands full again and Violet is all messed up in the middle of it to fix the problem when some old nemesis ---German ones nonetheless-come back and create chaos for Violet and everyone connected to her. You won’t be disappointed with this story. And…in an interesting twist due to his past experiences with the “events” in Deadwood and the ghosts Cooper is now experiencing some interesting changes that impact the story. Plus…how can you resist Harvey and his one liners? As always, I couldn’t put the book down.
