For more than two decades this book has been the most complete guide in print for officers of the United States Marine Corps. It provides essential information and sound guidance on professional matters which affect the individual Marine officer, his career, and his performance of duty. The main aims of this fourth edition, in the words of the author, are "to assist new officers to learn the ropes as quickly as they can, to digest for all readers the continuing changes which have beset the Defense Establishment, and to help the entire officer corps keep professionally up to date." Taken from the inner book cover of the Fourth Edition published in 1980.
It was very information and had a lot of good content. There were certainly parts of it that were rather dry and not really pertinent. except for certain situations. Still, it is something that I would recommend every officer/ officer candidate should read
Lt Colonel Este's (Ret.) book is a manual, and as such makes for a rather dry read. However, if you want to know what a Marine officer is supposed to know then it is a book that is required reading.
