"This volume is both a lively introduction and practical guide to the main concepts and problems of intercultural communication. Viewed from within the framework of interactive sociolinguistics associated with Tannen, Gumperz, and others, the authors focus in particular on the discourse of westerners and of Asians, the discourse of men and women, corporate discourse and the discourse of professional organizations, and intergenerational discourse."--BOOK JACKET.
I've been on a reading binge lately, and since I live in China I have been looking for a lot of good Chinese culture books. (This book often focuses on Chinese culture as a contrast to Western cultures and is extremely helpful for my purposes.) I'd already read quite a few books on Chinese culture, but this was by far the best. I would still recommend people read other books for Chinese culture as well, but this book not only revolutionized how I saw my time in China. It revolutionized how I understood and saw my entire life and every major relationship I have ever had. I am confident I will be a better and more effective person going forward because of this book, and I hope you will get the opportunity to gain the valuable knowledge contained in this book as well.
But go in with an open mind and a lot of stamina or you will learn nothing!! :-P
A business setting is different from a family setting. Men and women express themselves differently. Generations think a little differently. Inflection and context can determine what a sentence means.
