A beautiful book full of photographs there'd be no way you could replicate yourself without going to some serious lengths. Slightly biased toward London, but then, what isn't? As a Northerner it could do with a bit of Northern Steel to it, but otherwise a lovely reference book and something to remind you just how beautiful this country really is.

Received this in 2011 as a history prize. It's a bit too London centric (I fully understand London is an important area of the UK, but for a book to cover so much area, it does spend a little more time there than necessary). I would have probably liked to see Manchester, Birmingham, or Liverpool in more detail, or indeed places away from England (Wales and Scotland easily could have taken more room).

The pictures are amazing, and obviously the best part of the book. They are beautiful.

A couple of years old now, and the television series it is in support of long since finished. Neither of those matter though, because the images are still amazing and the commentary to go with them informative and occasionally surprising.

Read this for a book exam. It's a very strange book on which to base a test. It contains a lot of factoids, many of them repeated across sections. I didn't really come to any new understanding of the UK from this overview. The large pictures are lovely though.

Great coffee table book. Very interesting narrative with great photos. I particularly liked the "then and now" section.
