Strap yourself in - the roller coaster is leaving - a brilliant read!
This is one of those books that is so much more than a pleasant read. It is inspiring, thought provoking, and filled with hope. It shows how the present is always temporary and how important it is to grab the opportunities that the future holds for us. It shows how small kindnesses can make a huge difference in people's lives. It also just a hands-down great read - sucking you in from the beginning and leaving you pleasantly co

I could not put this book down. Such a good read! I was 100% with the character Grace from start to finish. I cried with her, grieved with her and laughed along with her...I found myself completely invested in her story. I can't wait to read more from this author!

Well Written

This is a well written story about a woman's journey and recovery after losing her husband and two children in a hit and run accident. It also is about restoring her faith in God. What I liked was Grace's idea to travel to the places her family would have loved to visit and do things they would have loved to do. It was to help her overcome her fears, step outside of her comfort zone and finish grieving while honoring her love for her husband and children. Her adventures were very rea

I enjoyed this novel a lot. I've never read a book quite like it and it did resonate with me at times. However, I did feel that there could have been more written about her family, as I struggled to understand a lot about who her family were. I also think that a lot of the characters were either very secondary or I struggled to understand them outside of their role in Grace's life. I would say many of them functioned as Grace's friends or love interest, but I didn't get to know them as individua ...more

They say that great fiction is good for the soul; it gives the reader the opportunity to inhabit a character and immerse themselves, not only in the character's world, but in their thoughts and emotions. Great fiction helps the reader develop empathy without ever having to walk the sometimes painful or dangerous paths of its subjects. Having access to their decision-making processes, blind spots, desires, consequences, enables us to feel deeply into another life, try it on, so to speak, from the ...more

The themes of grief, forgiveness, letting go, losing and finding love have permeated stories since time began. However, Vanessa Evetts has brought a fresh and raw quality to these themes in her debut novel, Out of the Ashes.
As a writer, she has truly "got into the heads" of the central characters, whose feelings, thoughts and words resonate with anyone who has experienced these emotions.
From the opening lines to the book's denouement, the emotion is palpable and real. Evetts describes the many l

Overall this book was an interesting story of recovering from trauma and grief. It did hit me emotionally at times and the main character was well portrayed. I did feel like the book was too long, that the story could have been condensed so that the main conflict (a love triangle of sorts) was both destined to happen and occurred sooner. I thought the secondary characters such as Sarah were a little underwritten. I also continued to have questions about the family such as how old her kids were a ...more

Wow! Such a stunning read from start to finish. Each chapter leaves you wanting more, and had me up until all of hours of the night because I couldn't put it down. I had to know what happened next! Vanessa really knows how to pull on the heart strings, and writes in a way which makes you feel as though you are there, living the characters story. It is a relatable story, especially for those who have either experienced a grief like Grace's, or spent time travelling. I cannot wait to see what Vane ...more

Coming back

This book must have been difficult to write, because it sure was difficult to read. What Grace lost was everything. But she had such a fantastic support system. What I absolutely loved, was her relationship with God, through others faith. This author did a fabulous job writing this story. There is so much care with Grace and her recovery. Vanessa Evetts is officially one of my favorite authors, and I look forward to more compelling stories.

Oh my goodness. This book breaks you down and builds you back up at the end. Make sure you settle in for you will not want to put this book down. Have a box of tissues handy you will need them. Prepare to join in the story as Vanessa has masterly weaved a story you feel part of. Grace's journey is a hard one and watching her go through it reminded me where to draw strength from.

Vanessa Evetts' foray into her writer's world could not have started with a better story.
Captured from the first words, you sit on the shoulder of the characters encouraging them, laughing with them, crying with them and pushing them from behind....desparately wanting the very best for them!
A deeply gratifying story that will leave an impression on you, making you want more!
