It’s dangerous out there. I’ve measured life not in years, months, or even days…but a matter of hours, if I’m lucky, and sometimes only seconds zipped past me. The pressure. The stress. American Biohacker tells the story of Russ Scala's quest to help friends, loved ones, clients and himself to take control of their health despite messages from the medical system that are often conflicting. You can sense Russ' deep passion for truth that will help people find what they really need to live long, healthy lives.
American Biohacker reads like the narrative of a man's life while providing takeaways that include:
It's all about our nutrient and hormone levels
It's not what we eat, but what we absorb
Each of us has a unique body chemistry
Test (your blood) - don't guess
Diabetes, heart disease, dementia all share a common factor - insulin
It's not cholesterol, it's endothelial dysfunction (coronary artery disease)
Cancer thrives in a high glucose environment
Testosterone is important to far more than our libido
But perhaps the biggest takeaway was this - I have to be my own advocate in the modern medical system. And I have to view my body as a system though my doctor(s) may only view it through the lens of their specialty. For example, my cardiologist may leave my testosterone levels to my urologist - even though testosterone has a powerful influence on my chances of heart disease. So I have to do my homework and be my own advocate.
Russ Scala emphasizes this sort of thing over and over, and in American Biohacker that emphasis comes via a story narrative that makes for a good read.
I will add that American Biohacker is a good companion to another revealing book - "The Clot Thickens" by Malcolm Hendrick. I read them in succession and suggest you try likewise.
In my opinion, it's fair to describe Russ Scala's lifework as a quest - from what I can tell, he is genuinely devoted to helping people get their body chemistry right to open the door to longer, more vibrant lives.
I would say this book was an enlightening first step into further growing my curiosity in Russ Scala’s challenge to the medical health status quo. Russ does a really good job at making this book engaging, it is a straightforward and easy read. You can tell that Russ is passionate, and does a really good job at breaking down complex topics in laymen terms. His research is worth looking into and sharing with others, as his discoveries of high fat, low carb (keto), nootropics, testosterone, cortisol and the real multi-factored causes of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and addiction really caught my interest, and it’s something he discovered many years before it becoming more mainstream now. This book is more of an autobiography style narrative of Russ’s exciting and candid life, not a research heavy sharing of the precise science and the reference to it, although there are some references made here and there. It is up to the reader to verify what’s being told to them. It’s best this way, especially for someone like me who would just get overwhelmed and lost. That’s why it’s a good first step and introduction to the exciting health related benefits he speaks of. It seems very balanced in my opinion, Russ’s approach to nutrition and health, with a lot of relevant life experience to back it up. After this book, it’d be a good idea to look more deeper into biochemistry, cholesterol, cortisol, nootropics, etc. One part that caught me off guard was Russ speaking about lucid dreaming and biohacking to induce it. That was awesome. Honestly an overall therapeutic read in a way, he has some solid life advice in there too. Highly recommend it.
More like a bigraphy, couple of interesting thoughts of author but nothing specific... I was hoping for useful informations about Blood tests and protocols of cure diseases.
