What if you came home from a four day business trip and someone was living in your house?

They have all of the paperwork to prove they leased your home for six months, the locks are changed and the wheels of justice move slowly because, hey, bureaucracy is real but also because you can't tell the police or even your own lawyer everything they need to know in order to help because you harbor a secret that could destroy your life...and this intruder seems to know all about it.

The Stranger Inside has a pretty enticing premise: Kimber Hannon returns home from a week away only to find herself locked out of her house. When she notices someone inside she calls the police, who get him to open the door; he produces the paperwork complete with Kimber's forged signature and insists that he's renting the house for six months. Overcome with frustration, Kimber rushes inside her house, only to have the man grab her and whisper in her ear 'I saw what you did.'

The Stranger Inside by Laura Benedict is a psychological thriller. Kimber returns home from a weekend away to find that all the locks in her house have been changed and a stranger is living there. He claims that he is renting the house when Kimber calls the police. She is unable to get to any of her clothes and personal possessions until the authorities can sort out this problem. Kimber is not a nice person and will do anything to get what she wants and the stranger knows something about her pas ...more

Maybe I'm overly picky when it comes to thrillers, but The Stranger Inside unfortunately had a few things that are deal-breakers for me when it comes to this genre, principal among them being a supremely unlikable protagonist. Unlikable protagonists aren't an issue for me in all fiction, but in a thriller, I need to be rooting for the main character for the story to have any emotional thrust. I could not root for Kimber. If Kimber was on fire and I had a glass of water, I'd drink it. (Okay, mayb ...more

The Stranger Inside by Laura Benedict was a great read. This was the first book by this author for me and I will be looking out for her other books. This story had so many twists and tried to steer the reader in so many ways. The main character was not the nicest of people but in this case I think it helped the story. It is a book that you need to keep reading, you just have to know how it ends.

Kimber returns home from a long weekend away to discover that her keys do not work in her front door.

This book was just ok. I didn’t love it and I felt it moved S-L-O-W but was ok. I struggled at times to keep going but maybe it was just me. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this book in return for my honest review.

This is my actual nightmare.

I read an early digital manuscript of this novel that I obtained as an employee of Hachette Book Group.

Nope! Sure can't not anymore- changed the locks- leased the place.
So who might I ask are you?
Wait What?!!
Yes, this happened to Kimber our main character so now what?
This is insane!
What does this stranger in her home know about her past that causes her to bend?
Well, folks the karma train has arrived at its destination and ironically there are more than a few characters about to embark.
This is perfection! Loved it!

Ohmygoodness this book! I was lucky enough to snag an advanced reader at Bouchercon from the wonderful Laura. I couldn’t wait to read it and am so glad I did. A lot of people say that they have to be drawn in by the first line of the book but I don’t always find that to be the case. However, this one drew me in right from the first line, “The outcropping of limestone on which Michelle Hannon struck her head had been a part of the hillside for three thousand years, before there were trees in sigh ...more

Unique story with so many twists! Definitely a fast paced, thrilling, psycho, paranoia filled plot with characters that I loved to hate!
An ending to make you say “WHAAT?!”

Thank you #NetGalley, the author and publisher for my free arc in exchange for my honest review. I will also be posting on Goodreads and Amazon.

Look for this book Feb 5!

The concept of The Stranger Inside by Laura Benedict is unnerving. Kimber Hannon returns home exhausted after a trip, expecting to soon be able to unwind with a glass of wine and some tv binging. However, upon arrival she finds that a man has moved into her house claiming that Kimber rented it to him before she left—and he has the paperwork to prove it. While Kimber has no idea who he is, the stranger seems to know her all to well, threatening to expose a dark secret Kimber has kept for years.

I was very curious about the story in the first half. The characters are just all despicable and the premise is quite good - woman comes back from a trip to find someone living in her house. Set in Missouri, there’s plenty of things going on - family issues, past mistakes, and infidelity. The only reason for the low ranking is how the ending became a bit flimsy.

Thanks to the publisher for the advance copy.

I seem to be in the minority with my opinion on this book.. I did not think it was particularly bad but it just was not a page turner for me. I slogged through most of it because I wanted to see if Kimber finally got her just desserts. Yeah, I know the story centered on her horrific tale of a house stolen out from under her but as I read along I learned that Kimber was a very twisted individual and so were almost all the people in her life. This book just did not click with me but I would still ...more

This is an easy and somewhat enjoyable read but unfortunately, the prose felt stiff and steel, I couldn't connect with the narrator. Seeing the lots of glowing reviews I believe I'm in the minority here.

Kimber comes home after a weekend away to find the locks changed at her house and a storage her living in it. He has plausible excuses why he is there but he seems to know Kimber’s darkest secrets and doesn’t appear to be leaving.

Unfortunately I struggled with this. The characters were not believable and I didn’t like Kimber. She seemed like a nasty piece of work. I wanted to like it but this just wasn’t my cup of tea. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my ho

In Laura Benedict's The Stranger Inside, Kimber Hannon's life seemed to be going smoothly until she returns from a vacation to discover someone has moved into her house and taken over essentially her entire life. She calls the cops, who are completely unhelpful. They tell her the person who is in her house has a valid lease, and that she will have to figure out somewhere else to live until the courts can get things figured out.

Shocked and having no roof over her head, she seeks solace

Excellent novel!

When I saw this as Read Now on NetGalley, not knowing this author before (a mistake I am now trying to correct by reading all of her books) I was a bit skeptical. It seemed like too good a deal to be true; I loved the synopsis and could just start reading, not even having to wait and see if I were approved? But it was just my lucky day, I guess.

This is a compelling read that goes layer by layer presenting you the main character. You start c

This was a fast paced enjoyable read with some unexpected twists and turns. I have to admit at the start of this book I felt sorry for Kimber but as the book played out I wasn't so sure. Although some parts of the book were easily predictable and not surprising other parts I didn't predict so it was a fun read overall and I would def recommend it to all lovers of suspense. This is a new author for me but I'd def read more of her stuff.

I received an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.

More than just a cheap thriller – not that there’s anything wrong with that - this is a truly well written multifaceted mystery story. The characters are real without necessarily being likable, and you believe in everything that happens and everyone you meet. Both pleasurable and literary. Four stars

This is really a page turner, I was hooked from the first page to this gripping story!

However, this arc needs a wee bit tidying up: like a 'beside table' instead of a bedside table and there was this weird scene on a porch where Lance was wearing his sunglasses, and then a few paragraphs later his eyes are cold.

Apart from that: magnificent read, it took me less than two days to read.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the book.

Here comes another story (I think this is the third or forth book I've read with this premise) in which the protagonist comes home to find a stranger living in her home.

As she investigates this stranger, she realizes he is connected to her deceased father, who left after the death of her elder sister, Michelle,
