The world of Sandran is plagued by an eternal horror. Terrifying mechanical monsters with knives for fingers, which drape themselves in the flesh of the dead, raid the planet periodically. The people of Sandran have learned to live their lives in the shadow of the creatures they know as the Flayers. But as Alundra, a young woman in search of her errant brother, comes face-to-skull with one of the Flayers, her fate – and that of her world – is radically changed. The Death Spectres have come to defeat the metallic monsters. But will the people of Sandran be saved, or will they be collateral damage?

The world of Sandran is overrun by Necron Flayed Ones hunting for human skins, meat and souls.
Poor Alundra looking for her brother is going to learn the hard way that Imperium of Man and its Angels of Death can be far worst than those living metal abominations.
A great grimdark bleak short tale and it left me wanting to read a Death Spectres Space Marines full-lenght novel: this Successor Chapter of the Raven Guard vigiling against supernatural inhabitants of the Ghoul Stars is totally f%ck€d up!

Originally published in the Black Library Anthology 2013/14, this is a tale of an ordinary Imperial citizen caught in the middle of a conflict between two horrifying foes. As necron Flayed Ones rampage through her township, Alundra races to find her brother and try to escape the carnage.
It's a brief vignette of life on one Imperial world, showcasing just how terrifying and distant the Imperium is to many of its citizens. We’re told very little about the characters, but the few pieces of information we do get provide a little context and help add pathos to what is a short, grim story.

An absolute horror show of a story that shows that, as a normal citizen of the Imperium, you're screwed even when you're saved.
When the children of Llandu'gor look like a better alternative to being recruited for breeding stock on an Astartes homeworld, you know things are pretty freakin' terrible.

Short story that I've finally found again. Starts with death unyielding on a backwater Imperial World's humans. Valient Space Marines arrive and save the few who survive. Ends on such a Grimdark note.
