Fair riddles told by the Pooh friends tie into things they are doing in the story, giving hints to the littlest readers (and some of us adults).

(My Pooh Project: I love Winnie the Pooh, and so does my wife. Having a daughter gave us a chance to indoctrinate her into the cult by buying and reading her every Pooh book we came across. How many is that? I’m going to count them this year by reading and reviewing one every day and seeing which month I finally run out. Track my progress here:

'The Great Riddle Contest' is a very charming story from start to finish. A rainy day prompts Owl to make a riddle, then explaining riddles to a curious Roo. Roo decides they should have a riddle contest 'with a prize and everything'. Each character does their best to create a good riddle. In the end, nobody is stumped but they all win after correctly guessing Owl's riddle and they all enjoy a picnic supper together that Owl prepared.

This story is a great way to introduce someone to riddles and in the end there is one riddle that stands out as being probably the single best riddle I have ever read.

"What listens without complaining, shares without asking for anything in return, and often knows you better than you know yourself?"

"A friend."

I liked how everyone got a prize because everyone won.
