Until the pain in her abdomen, which has steadily been increasing, working its way around to her back, keeping her awake at night, and causing her to lose weight, sends her to the doctor. Who then sends her to the hospital for tests. Where doctors then inform her that she has pancreatic cancer--the kind that will kill you within three weeks to three months.

Poppy, of course, isn't ready to die. Watching the reaction of her family--twin brother Phil, her mother, and step-father Cliff--only brings the truth closer to home. Poppy is going to die, there's nothing anyone can do about it, and it's going to be painful.

Except there is someone who can do something about it. James Rasmussen, her best friend from El Camino High School, her secret crush, a boy who now tells her something impossible--he's a lamia, a boy who was born a vampire, a member of the Night World, and he can change Poppy into a vampire to avoid certain death.

Of course Poppy doesn't believe him at first, but then what choice does she have? There's always been something different about James, and now she knows exactly what the difference is. So she agrees to become a vampire, knowing she'll have to leave her family behind, but knowing it's the only way to avoid certain death.

What follows is a fast-moving, interesting story about Poppy's immersion into becoming a vampire, the toll it takes on her brother, Phil, who finds out what they're doing, and the danger it puts James in. Because there are only two rules of the Night World: Never let the humans know it exists, and never fall in love with one of them. James has broken both of those rules.

What a great start to the Night World series! Towards the end of the book we meet some other interesting characters, which I'm guessing will play major roles in future books, so I can't wait to get started on the next read. ...more

I decided to reread this series a couple years ago, but I didn't make it very far for some reason. This series has always been my least favorite of all Smith's work (except for her first two fantasy novels, which aren't really my jam), but it made an impact on me as a young teen nonetheless.

actual rating 2.5 stars. This was a fast and entertaining read, but a little too simple and maybe a bit juvenile for me. I may have loved it at 14 though and I think it would be a perfect read for young girls around that age.

As an adult I rated this as a 2 star. The story had potential and the characters are likable. Poppy was well developed and we learned about James as we read the book. Phil, Poppy’s twin brother acted in many ways that any brother who cared for his sister would act. Phil also did some things a sane person would not if the situations were real. From a teenager point of view the brother was brave and amazing, maybe a little too involved but acceptable. The lack of parents except during important stuff (Poppy’s diagnosis) was acceptable and enjoyable.
As an adult I was a little board with the book. I was a little more than half way into the book and I thought there was not going to be any action with the little amount of pages I have left to read. Once the action started, it moved so fast the book was over. Questions were left unanswered, one I thought was important to the story. What was the dream about?
From a teenager point of view, the book probably moved quickly and exactly how it should have. The end of the book explanation is probably accepted with no questions left over.
As someone who reads many vampire stories, it is the typical male vampire/ female human love story. I saw some similarities with this series and newer released vampire series. Some examples of this are character similarities (vampires going outside during the day) and even character names (Quinn, Claudine, and Eric). I will say Eric might not be anything as it is a common name but it was pretty odd considering the other two names. It makes me wonder if the other two authors read this story before writing their own series.
As a mother, I like is how L.J. Smith wrote about Poppy being in love with James but did not make or imply they had a sexual relationship. Young teens are faced with enough sexual media that it is nice to have one talk about emotions. In my personal opinion James should have been a little more aggressive considering he is a vampire and all.

I would recommend Secret Vampire for any teen girl because in encompasses a wide variety of genres into one book without going too heavily into any of them.

Among some of my favorites. Outstanding literary work. The characters are well developed, interesting. The liked characters are likable and the hated are unlikable. I own 9 books of Night World so it was just about time I get to read them. I didn't really expect anything, I know L.J.Smith style of writing, I love it but it's rare for it to be mind blowing. Except in Vampire Diaries of course.

THE WORLD: The everyday surrounding world is just like ours. But there is another world that people do not know about. And it is the Night World. It is full of vampires, witches and werewolves...I assume there are more but so far in book one we are only introduced to them. I always liked L.J. Smith for her ability to write about this type of world. The vampire in this book are of focus but they are not something blah. They are powerful and have advanced senses. They need human blood to survive and I actually very much liked how this need for human blood was explained in the book.

CHARACTERS: Poppy is the main character in this book. I really have an issue with the name but other than that she is rather likable character. She is just cute. Her best friend is James, he is the dark vampire who tries to help Poppy when she gets third stage pancreatic cancer. However, Poppy's twin brother Phil does not trust James. To be honest, the characters in this book are very simple.

LOVE: James is Poppy's best friend. Poppy is in love with James. James does not return Poppy's feeling. At least till she gets cancer. In the end they are soulmates and in love. Very simple.

PLUS: This book had witches. I love witches!

PLUS II: As most L.J.Smith books it was a very easy read. Like a one afternoon book really. Maybe that is why I didn't remember a whole story even I read it in my life before.

MINUS: It was actually a little bit weird how this book was structures. About 80% of this book is about Poppy becoming a vampire. Then in last 50 pages a villain is introduced. In last 20 pages the villain is busted and it all end very happy ending. Just strange story building.

I went into this wanting a fun easy read and was instantly sucked in. I have daughters of darkness lined up and ready to go. I could not put this down at all. Im away this week but once im back ill be doing a video review.
Poppy is sick and it is not looking good she can change or die. Her best friend can offer her the choice of death death or death which will she choose?

Buddy read with Laura, i hope you like it more than I did.

This book was a total let down, the only thing I like about it is that it's fast paced. The plot is way to shallow with very little world building. The characters are boring and annoying, the main character is sooooo annoying like grow up already.

For a PNR, The love is almost non existent and not much is said about the vampire world, they kissed just once in the whole book 😞😞, like seriously.

As I eagerly await for the next installment of my fave vampire series, I decided to pick up The Night World by L.J. Smith to get my healthy dose of paranorm. I wasn’t amazed with the first book in the series, but I can’t say that I was disappointed either. The characters in this story are not entirely captivating, but I was interested enough in the storyline and plot to plow through and see where it took me.

I wasn’t amazed with the first book in the series, but I can’t say that I was disappointed either. The characters in this story are not entirely captivating, but I was interested enough in the storyline and plot to plow through and see where it took me.

My favorite character in this book is Phil because I like his reaction to the situations he faces and his protective stance over his twin sister Poppy. I wasn’t too impressed with James because he came across rather harsh and at times somewhat hostile, especially during his interactions with Phil. Poppy is a likeable character, I just wish the author would have picked a less distracting name for her because it reminds me of an endearment someone would use for their father, but that’s beside the point.

Anywho, about the book… The Night World is a secret society made up of vampires, werewolves, witches and shape shifters that live among humans and follow strict rules. But as with most rules, some are made to be broken, and that’s exactly what happens when Poppy, a human girl, is diagnosed with a deadly form of cancer, and James, her lifelong friend who happens to be a vampire from the Night World makes a choice to break the two rules he is obligated to live by in order to save her life… (1) Never allow humans to gain knowledge of the Night World, and (2) Never fall in love with one of them.

I will definitely continue on with the series to see where it goes because I’d like to learn more about L.J. Smith’s lore on vampires and all of the other paranormal creatures that make up her Night World. I’m also interested to see what happens to James and Poppy as Poppy begins to uncover her powers and past and James faces the repercussions of his decision. I gave up on "Teen Vampire" books back when I still was a teenager... However, this book had been sitting on my shelf for years and I thought I would give it a chance.

It was actually really entertaining. It is very 90's, but I found it charming and funny. There is no insta-love, no air-headed heroine getting herself into trouble, and no overly brooding teenagers. That is one word that describes this book. The characters were sweet, the romance was sweet, etc.
Still, do not let that word fool you. This isn't some childish fairy tale, or one of those cheesy romances with no story or depth behind them, despite the corny covers with bad hair cuts and scary witch-like villains ~~which do not appear in the story.~~
Now, I could - should? - write a small summary of the story, but the premise is right there. So I won't. Instead, enjoy a nice photo of a cat, an Sweet.

Since this is the first review I've ever really done, I'm breaking it up into sections, so I can get organized and not babble about irrelevant things half the time, like Poppy's hair. ~~Which I love.~~

Characters
-Poppy North: Poppy was an interesting character for me to read and think about. She wasn't like a lot of other heroines, but there were a few things that irritated me about the female protagonist- well, only two, really. One of those things, and the main problem I had with the story, was the fact that Poppy was helpless and dependent on James, and James only. Occasionally, she was also ruled by her brother, Phil, and manipulated by James's cousin ~~and the love of my life~~, Ash. Either way, the men in Poppy's life seemed to be the ones who made the decisions for her, had to go and save her, and do, well, everything, for her. I'd give her credit for deciding to leave James on her own, but since that backfired anyway, I won't. Still, personality wise, Poppy was refreshing. Buoyant, spirited, energetic and sweet as a cupcake, Poppy was fun to read about. Her enthusiastic attitude and her innocent demeanor was really a breath of fresh air, to say the least. I also liked that L.J. Smith expanded on Poppy's hobbies and likes, talking quite a bit about her unique taste in music, even if that was quickly forgotten later on.
-James Rasmussen: Okay. I have mixed feelings about James, except no matter what, I still love this guy. His love towards Poppy is apparent throughout the story, even if he doesn't ever really outright state them. It's obvious he cares for her, and aside from that, he's a very sweet, chivalrous person. He may be a bit stoic and serious, but he's also exceedingly considerate and caring. He's got his good points, and he's got his bad. He's very realistic, to me, in this way, and it's refreshing not to meet a boy in YA fiction who is hot, a jerk, and nothing else.
-Phil North: I enjoyed his character, even though I don't usually get along with straight-laced people like him. Though he lacked a serious sense of humor and his attitude seriously annoyed me, I still think he was a good character, and he only got on my nerves because of my personal taste and not because he was a bad person. Despite not always getting along with his sister, he cares deeply for her, just like in any other brother-sister relationship. He is there for her through every tough thing she faces in this book, and he reacts to things the same way many people - including myself - in real life would. Even if I wouldn't get along with him, I still have to say he's definitely a great character. And it was nice that family was actually integrated into the story, for once.

Hlavní hrdinkou příběhu je šestnáctiletá studentka Poppy, která se dozví, že ji do konce života zbývá pouhých pár týdnů. Trpí totiž rakovinou slinivky, kterou přežije jenom jedno procento pacientů. Poppy se pomalu začíná smiřovat s tím, že brzy umře. Musela by se ovšem stát upírkou a to by znamenalo, že už nikdy nesmí vidět své rodiče a ani bratra Philipa. Poppy dlouho neváhá, chce totiž žít. Proto s Jamesem souhlasí a vymění si spolu krev. Philip se ale snaží Jamese držet od Poppy dál. Ten ve snaze Poppy pomoci řekne Philipovi co je zač a požádá ho o pomoc. Poppy se snaží nenápadně se rozloučit s rodiči… Jak to vlastně všechno zvládnou? Může žít jako upír sající lidem krev? Vysávat jim život z těla? A jaký trest čeká ty, kteří přemění obyčejné lidi v upíry?

Jestli umřu, přestanu existovat. Budu vůbec někde? Nebo prostě úplně zmizím?

Hlavni hrdinka mi přišla velmi sympatická. Přijde mi opravdu strašné, že už v tak mladém věku má rakovinu a brzo zemře. Souhlasila jsem s jejím názorem a rozhodnutím, že chce žít a stát se upírem, ačkoliv už nikdy v životě neuvidí svoji rodinu. Sice je to docela krutá daň za dlouhý život, ale Poppy moc na výběr neměla, stejně by totiž jednou umřela a rodiče opustila.
Líbil se mi i James, její nejlepší kamarád. Už ze začátku knihy mi bylo jasné, že k Poppy chová hluboké city a udělal by pro ni opravdu vše.
Moc se mi ale nelíbil Poppyin bratr Philip. Zdál se mi náladový, nechápavý a místy Poppy vyčítal její rozhodnutí…

Autorčin styl psaní se mi velmi líbil a musím říct, že se mi kniha opravdu líbila. Autorka dokázala dokonale vystihnout situaci a rychle čtenáře obeznámit s většinou pravidel Říše temnot, do které patří vlkodlaci, upíři i čarodějové. Zde mě velmi překvapilo, že upíři a vlkodlaci žijí pospolu a vůbec mezi sebou neválčí. Zaujal mě i popis upírů (kterým nevadí denní světlo, ani česnek, jenom kolík do srdce), dělící se na lamie, což jsou upíři, kteří se už tak narodili, a stvoření upíři.

Cítila se… svobodná.

Musím přiznat, že autorka mě mile překvapila a knihu hodnotím pozitivně 4 / 5.

Après Le journal d'un vampire, je me suis lancée dans cette nouvelle série de L. J. Smith. Je dois vous avertir immédiatement, c'est le livre que j'ai lu le plus rapidement de toute ma vie. J'ai dévoré ce livre en à peine une soirée, et une partie de nuit. Ce n'est peut-être pas le meilleur roman que j'aie lu, mais il a au moins le mérite de m'avoir captivé le temps d'une soirée.

Dès la première phrase de ce roman, on apprend que Poppy va mourir. Poppy a un cancer incurable, et elle doit donc se préparer au pire. Mais c'est sans compter sur James, sont meilleur ami de toujours pour qui Poppy a des sentiments plus fort que de la simple amitié. Lorsque James apprend la terrible nouvelle, il décide de transgresser les règles et de révéler son terrible secret à Poppy, pour qui il a aussi des sentiments. James fera donc tout en sont pouvoir pour sauver sa belle d'une mort certaine et la garder auprès de lui au-delà de la mort. La tâche ne sera pas facile puisque Phil, le frère jumeau de Poppy, n'accepte pas des les voir aussi proches alors qu'il sait que sa soeur ne sera bientôt plus de ce monde.
Il s'agit là d'un roman tout ce qu'il y a de plus simple et facile à lire. On entre très vite dans l'histoire sans nécessairement le vouloir ou l'avoir cherché. Cela se fait tout naturellement. Un bon point pour l'auteur, selon moi.
Les personnages sont intéressants, mais pas non plus extraordinaires. C'est du déjà vu, et on peut parfois regretter de ne pas approfondir un peu plus leur histoire. On ne fait que les survoler sans en révéler plus. Petite déception de ce côté, même si on ne peut pas vraiment en vouloir à l'auteure.
L'idée du Night World est très intéressante par contre. On sent qu'il y a énormément de mystère et d'interdits qui l'entourent, et c'est ce qui fait qu'on veut en savoir plus. Ce premier roman de la série qui en comptera dix n'est donc qu'une introduction, je l'espère. J'espère également avoir l'occasion de plonger plus en profindeur dans le Night World, découvrir les créatures qu'on peut y trouver.

She doesn't have a favorite TV show, because she doesn't have time to watch TV (and only owns one for playing movies).

Her favorite people are her readers, each of whom she cherishes with deep and lasting affection.
