With the bonus of being a graphic novel, this book tackles tons of sea life information and builds in an adventure along the way.

Famous explorer, Fabien Cousteau, invites his two young friends to join him on a high sea adventure as they head out to tag a great white shark. But the shark isn't the only thing they discover along the way.

Graphic novels are a huge hit with my kids, and I was excited to receive one which puts an educational twist in along the way. The book opens immediately with the strong message that sharks are endanger and gives one reason why. From there, it switches to the adventure itself. Starring Fabien Cousteau, two young boys accompany him and his crew out to the ocean. The adventure blows through, making sure the pacing stays high. All the while, information...very factual...accompanies the adventure and provides tons of facts and knowledge to the reader.

The illustrations are top notch and a treat to follow, but considering the illustrator, this isn't surprising. Fans of graphics will enjoy the book from this aspect alone.

While all of these wonderful aspects promise a great read, the information part is heavy. The constant stream of knowledge doesn't flow into the dialogue naturally, and the amount of text greatly outweighs that which is usually found in graphic novels. While kids who have a keen interest in learning more about sea life will enjoy this, others—and especially reluctant readers—might not stay engrossed in the pages.

Still, it's a great way to bring knowledge across to the reader and also provides some important, environmental issues.

I received a complimentary copy and am leaving my honest thoughts.

Great White Shark Adventure (Fabien Cousteau Expeditions) by James O. Fraioli, illustrated by Joe St. Pierre, 101 pages. GRAPHIC NOVEL. Margaret K. McElderry Books (Simon & Schuster), 2019. $20. 9781534420885.

BUYING ADVISORY: EL - ESSENTIAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

Fabien Cousteau (or a fictionalized version of the real researcher) leads a research team that includes two junior explorers on a trip into the oceans around South Africa. Their target is to find and tag a huge Great White Shark. The trip covers a few different days and many marine animals besides great white sharks are seen and learned about. By the end, the team and the reader have learned a lot about animals and conservation.

I really enjoyed this elementary-level graphic novel. The story is fictionalized, but the scientific information included is interesting and factual. The illustrations are well done and I think many a young reader will be drawn to this exciting story about marine research. There's a great message about conservation in the story as well as points trying to rehabilitate the shark's reputation from Hollywood stereotypes. Overall a great read and I hope to see more in this series very soon!

Weaves a story of scientists trying to track and tag a humongous great white shark with loads of science facts great for curious kids. I learned loads and was totally into the gnarly shark illustrations!

informational, pretty good art style, it all felt pretty random though and i was given a lot of information that wasn’t necessarily even important. not my fav and not well written in my opinion. i also had my siblings read it too and they said it was a meh read. i did learn a ton of random animal facts though, which i always find fun.

Great information - for older MG readers. Gives me Wild Kratts vibes without the cartoonish storyline.

Based on the real-life adventures ocean explorers, Great White Shark Adventure follows Bella and Marcus as they accompany a fictionalized Fabien Cousteau on an expedition to find a reported massive great white shark off the coast of South Africa. A lot of factual information is mixed in with the story, although none of it is officially documented in the book and should be taken as approximately in accordance with accepted science beliefs and data. As the expedition sets out to find and tag a large great white, the kids learn about the physical characteristics of great white sharks and how they live. The kids even get inside a shark cage to observe the sharks swimming nearby. When the shark the expedition is looking for doesn't materialize, they get out a decoy to try to attract her. The next day, one of the scientists climbs inside a decoy that looks like a large seal (fiction, no scientist would do this in real life, it would be too risky). When the large shark they are looking for still hasn't appeared, they send out a robotic shark sub. While the story has been fictionalized and isn't 100% believable (if only finding treasure and enormous sharks were so easy), it does make for a fun adventure tale, especially for young readers who are fascinated by sharks. If you have a young reader in your life that enjoys Shark Week, they are bound to enjoy reading this graphic novel.
