Robbie and Emily have been together for decades. Now, their joints are creaking and their eyesight is failing - but their love for each other is as fresh and fierce as the day they first met. They have had children and grandchildren, lived full and happy and intimate lives.

‘Yes,’
she said. ‘Yes. Just you and me.’

I’m not a great fan of romance novels. I like character and plot and tension that isn’t just flutterings of “be still my foolish heart”. There is plenty of weak-kneed shock and overwhelming compulsion to flout the rules (and current commitments), but there’s quite a story here as well.

Having read and enjoyed Dear Thing by Julie Cohen, I was looking forward to reading this new one, especially with such a gorgeous cover and having read some positive reviews. It started well and I was thinking this would be a great love story about Robbie and Emily. From the moment Robbie walks out the door, leaving Emily a letter and a rose, the story spools backwards. This interesting technique didn’t work for me. The longer it moved backwards filling in the gaps of this couple’s story, the le ...more

I don't really do love stories.
This one I did.
Told backwards and utterly compelling first word to last (sob fueled) moment.
Review nearer publication.

Love stories are not usually my thing. But I did enjoy this one as I do like this authors books.

Robbie and Emily have been married for several years. Two sons and grandchildren have blessed them in their latter years.

Robbie was a boat builder and Emily and daughter did love to spend his hard earned money. Emily was an obstetrician to both well paid jobs.

An OK life, a good life, or so it seemed.

Age has now kicked in and Robbie has developed dementia. I thought then it was going to be based on t

Together is the first book I've read by Julie Cohen but judging by this one I won't be surprised to find myself reading some of her other titles. She certainly knows how to reel her readers into her story and she delivered a number of surprises. Despite my early guesses I was never even close.

Told in reverse chronological order we begin with Robbie, Emily's husband of some 50 years, realising his memory is failing him. Partly in order to save Emily from having to care for him

Quick review thoughts:

I really loved it, such a beautiful read with emotions that crept up on me. About a married couple who overcome huge obstacles to be together, one of which is not truly revealed until the end and made the story even more thought provoking. It's about a love so very deep. A love that lasts a life time.

Book Club read - most of our group thoroughly enjoyed this one-

I received a copy of Together along with an envelope stating that it should only be opened when instructed. Needless to say, with such an intriguing package, Together didn't have long to wait on my TBR pile before curiosity got the better of me. Once I opened the book, I became lost in Emily and Robbie's story and would have raced through it at the speed of light even without the added intrigue of the mysterious envelope.

The story of Emily and Robbie is told in reverse from 2016 to 1962. Now any

OK guys. Confession time. "Together" is my first book by Julie Cohen. So there. I do admit, I have some of her previous books on my bookshelf, it's just that I've never succeeded to read them. However, after hearing so many brilliant things about Ms Cohen's books, it's no wonder I was so looking forward to reading "Together" and now, after reading this brilliant, unique new release I am going to make it my priority to read the other novels as soon as possible.

So we meet Emily and Robbie in 2016

Beware... spoilers ahead!!

I originally gave this book a 4 star rating (the same as its average rating) and then two weeks later I was lying there at half 2 in the morning thinking about how much of it bothered me. I don't know what I was thinking with 4 stars, and I also don't know why everyone else seems to think it's worthy of that.

To start with I really, really did not like how the character of Robbie was portrayed, it felt like he was supposed to be likeable and I was supposed to fall in lo

Oh dear. So many people seem to have loved this book, and to have given it rave reviews. Admittedly, the writing style is excellent, and I enjoyed the originality of a story that unfurls backwards. But (no spoilers here) the big secret that is revealed turns out to be utterly trite and stupidly predictable, while at the same time completely implausible, thus ruining what could have been an extremely good, beautifully romantic story. And once I’d found out what the main characters had been hiding ...more

I think I want to like this book more than I did.

I wasn’t sure if having the story told backwards would work for me but the author done it in a great way that did not complicate the story. This is definitely the sort of book that would benefit being read twice so you could really appreciate the storyline

I didn’t really like Robbie and this book took me over a week to finish as I wasn’t that invested in it. There was a lot of heavy themes in this book which I think for the most part was unnecess

Amazing!

Where to begin.. at the beginning or the end...

Robbie and Emily, a romantic story of a couple who spent their life together, but as old age sets in and they slow down they will always wonder if keeping secrets from their family was the right thing to do.

Words may not truly express how this story effected me. A beautiful love story about two souls who were destined to be together and the painstaking obstacles that they encountered along the way.

Not a fan

So much wrong with this book for me. Conversations that did not ring true, conversations that were not relevant or cliche, conversations dropping plot points that the characters would have known but sounded like 'new' information: "Well you know my dad was a doctor in this town...", etc.

As far as I’m aware, this is my first encounter of Julie Cohen’s work. This was a lovely book with interesting characters. I found it faultered a little half way though, but picked up pace and piqued my interest again at the three quarters mark. I’d recommend this book for a sweet read, one where you can drink a nice mug of tea and lose yourself in the story.

A stunning emotional read. A story of great love and secrets told backwards and it really works. Beautifully written, starting with the end, and going back to the beginning.

One of my top reads of the year.

Eighty-year old Robbie Brandon, the lead character of Julie Cohen’s Together, seems to have suffered a far quicker decline. But it takes us the whole book to understand why its full impact would be even more devastating for him, his beloved Emily and their family.

As is probably obvious from the blurb, this book works backwards.

It starts with something devastating and I was in messy tears within pages. My own family’s experience with my father’s dementia (his inability to remember anything new a

Robbie and Emily have been together for a long time. They clearly love each other very much. But what is the secret they are keeping? What was so bad that they've lost contact with friends and family over it?

I'm not totally sure how to review this. As a writer, I loved it. The book is written backwards - given the story, it was probably the only way you could tell the story. At a technical level, it's fascinating. You start with the day Robbie dies and go back in steps, each section revealing a

If the first chapter doesn't tug at your heartstrings and put a tear in your eye, as it did with me, then you must be made of stone!! And that stunning opening had me hooked immediately and racing through each chapter to delve deeper into the uniquely told love story.

It's a story that starts at the end! And I really enjoyed that way of it being told! It allowed you to focus on certain parts of their lives together, and before, and helped put things into perspective as to why things were happenin

From the outset of Together we know that Emily and Robbie have secrets. Secrets so incendiary that even their beloved sons haven't been told. We meet them in Maine in 2016, when health worries during their twilight years threaten to reveal all they've kept hidden for so long. From coastal Maine, Julie Cohen then takes us on a beautifully clever, tightly spun trip back in time to leafy England during 1962. Each chapter a perfect vignette, a snapshot in time, gradually revealing the true strength ...more

Wow, this book was quite something!

Emily and Robbie have an amazing bond spanning over 50 years, something that nobody can break. However, their entire lives together are a trail of lies and secrets.

The story was interesting because it started in 2016 and gradually went back in time, where all the layers that made up their relationship were slowly revealed. At first I was a little bit frustrated; I can handle books that jump between the present day and then jump back in time to reveal certain

It is hard to write a review without spoiling some secrets. It started out with a surprise, ended with an even more shocking revelation.

I have to say i kept wanting to get everything over with, since the first few parts were slow. However with time i began seeing how strong their love for each other was, despite misgivings and flaws. Emily and Robbie were far from perfect, but i loved unfolding secrets and finding layers of truths foreshadowed in the beginning. It really did get better after the

What an amazing read! A book which starts with a sad ending & ends with a complicated beginning. I have never come across this format before & it’s genius. As a plot it would not have worked so well if the story had been related in the correct order. As soon as the very unpredictable secret emerges you will see why. You do need to memorise some detail as you go along as the gaps are being filled in before you discover what the gaps are (!) I feel like going back to the beginning to fill ...more

A moving love story with an intricate plot, this book genuinely made me put my life on hold until I reached the very last page. But I'm sad to say that it's over-written in places, as well as under-researched. Someone's favourite book in 1962 cannot be 'Watership Down' (published 1972), and so on.

Holy crap bags!! 😳😳 I have just finished this book after being completely immersed in it for the past 36hrs!!
All I will say is that never in a million years did I expect the ending I did! It left me speechless and also rather emotional.
This isn’t an author I’ve read before or a book that I would normally pick up. It was recommended by a friend and I am so happy she gave it to me. Fully rounded story and characters. Loved it!!
