I was not on a debate team nor do I plan to be. However, this book was given to me by a friend who was and believed this book was invaluable. The author does a great job making the topics and various philosophies approachable for someone with little background knowledge like me.

The book is well explained and has some helpful features to key readers to the more relevant parts of the book. The chapters for someone like me that just wants to learn the big ideas of the various philosophies are neatly divided. He explores each philosophy and gives pointers to argue for and against them.

He also includes pointers for use during a debate and some procedural tips, but I wasn't able to use those, having never debated before.

This is a great reference book for the major philosophies as well as common arguments for and against.
