Autobiography of Benjamin Johnson, an early convert to the Mormon Church who was a member of Joseph Smith's private circle. A pioneer settler of Utah, he also helped establish Mormon colonies in Arizona and Mexico.
This may not be anyone else's cup of tea, but getting into the mind of my great great grandfather, who became a follower and close companion of Joseph Smith, went on missions to canada and hawaii and was married to seven live women and one dead one, and has to date over 40,000 descendants of which I am one with his fourth wife.... well... it was fascinating to me.
Amazing story of a man who joined the Mormon Church as a teenager in 1831, became an intimate of founder Joseph Smith, and lived into his 80s.
I read the book because he is a great-great grand-uncle to me (my direct line is his brother Joel Hills Johnson). B F (Bennie as Joseph called him) is a better storyteller, with more detail and memory for compelling events in Church history. Highly recommended!
Brent and I read this together. It's a frank and engaging autobiography of Brent's great-great(?)uncle as a young man who witnessed close-up the beginnings of Mormonism.
