Little Owl returns in this third picture-book adventure from author/illustrator Divya Srinivasan, following upon Little Owl's Night and Little Owl's Day . This time he experiences his first autumn and winter - his first snow! He watches as the leaves fall and some of his friends - Bear, Hedgehog - go into hibernation. Enjoying the foggy, snowy forest with Raccoon, he is assured by his mother that spring will come again...

Like its two predecessors, Little Owl's Snow pairs a simple but engaging text with absolutely magical illustrations. In truth, the visuals are what make these books stand out, and this is no exception. The bold colors pop on the pages, which mostly have deep black and gray backgrounds, and the stylized, big-eyed animal characters are sweetly appealing. Of course, as a fox lover I particularly enjoyed the wintry scenes in which a vibrantly red fox cavorts on a snowy white background. Recommended to young animal lovers, and to picture-book readers looking for stories about autumn and winter.

Ending is quick and seems unfinished. Great illustrations

This is another sweet story from this series about a young owl exploring his world. It doesn't have much to say about snow that other books on the subject haven't already covered, except that Owl's mother reminds him that he is lucky to be an animal who is awake to experience it. Still, my one-year-old and three-year-old have both enjoyed having the story read aloud to them. The text felt pretty generic to me, but the illustrations do a nice job of evoking the changes in nature that occur as fall changes to winter. I also love the endpapers: Bear gathering food at the start, and curled up to hibernate beneath the snow at the end. This is the only book of this series that we have in hardcover and not as a board book, and it was nice to see it full-size, with the endpapers and jacket.

There is not a lot of plot here, but there are two strengths.

One is that this book accepts that there are animals that you don't see in the winter, as opposed to the plot being some contrivance to get the bears and hedgehogs to play in the snow.

In addition, the art style is wonderful and engaging. I exclaimed over page after page.

Cute, but not *quite* as good as her others. Gets the job done for a snowy story time, though!

A sweet story about Little Owl & friends getting ready for winter and the snow.

Lovely illustrations of many woodland animals-who doesn’t love those big eyes.

Well read and shared by Miss Molly.

Browsing books to give my friends' children as gifts since I won't gift anything I haven't first read myself.

I love the exploration of winter in nature. This was non-fiction content in a fiction presentation, which is pretty awesome. Also, Little Owl and his giant eyes (and the rest of the illustrations) really just captured my heart. Right to the gifting list.

Picked this on up in the local library today. It caught my eye since I have Little Owl’s Day and have enjoyed reading that with my little boy.

This book explores the changes that occur in the seasons as they transition from autumn to winter, as experienced by a little owl for the first time. I like that it presents complex concepts so simply. For example lead abscission, migrations, hibernation, and effects of cold temperatures on breath and water. These are described through the observances of the little owl who does not know those big technical words or the details of how those processes work.

From a young child’s perspective I feel this is a great way to present these ideas. From an adult perspective they seem too simplified. Which is why I like this book. It’s like I get to glimpse the world as I once saw it.

The story does end quick, however I think it appropriate because the story’s focus is on the changes that occur leading up to winter setting in, not what happens during winter.

I recommend this book as a fun short read. Use it as a method to help kids learn about the changes that occur when seasons change and that change brings new adventures!

Little Owls Snow by Divya Srinivasan. PICTURE BOOK. Viking (Penguin) 2018. $18.00. 9780670016518

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) –ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

Little Owl notices that the season is changing, leaves are falling and his animal friends are going to hibernate. He starts to get really lonely, except for his friend raccoon. When he talks to his mother, she helps him to appreciate the winter season for what it is and enjoy the time. Filled with bright simple large illustrations.

This story is fun accompaniment to a winter fact book. I think many children will relate to the loneliness of winter, as they aren’t out with their friends as much and the days are shorter and darker. The illustrations are so darling and simple enough to ask large groups questions about.

I wanted to like "Little Owl's Snow" more than I did. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice enough book. It's the story of the woods changing from fall to winter and all that happens. Little Owl is able to see things not normally seen (like the animals underneath the frozen pond) but Little Owl is also ready for it to be spring. Friends are being missed.

For me, the book felt extremely formulaic. Other coworkers and I had planned on using it in a storytime. And while the illustrations are nice, the book lacks pizzazz one hopes for out of storytime material. None of us wound up using it in our winter-themed storytimes.

That being said, I like other Little Owl books....I think that is why this one did bum me out.

A chill cut through the forest.
Little Owl fluffed his feathers.

"Something is happening!" he thought.

1. Another new book from the "Little Owl" series we have read and we love it because we love animals! Very cute and serene!

2. I love the illustrations of the night time forest and a return to Little Owl's worlds.

3. A great read for bedtime, cute little book about the wonder of snow and encourages being curious about the goings on around you!

The forest is changing right before Little Owl's eyes. Snow is beginning to fall and many of his friends are going to sleep for the winter, little owl is sad, but mama lets him know he will see them again in the spring!

This was a nice little children's book. Not the best I've ever read. Not the worst.

I thought the art was interesting and the pictures are active and engaging enough that it can withstand several reads, there is a lot to keep a kid's attention. I'm personally attracted to earth tones, so this was an excellent book for that. The story is basically about winter coming, and all the animals bedding down for the winter. So, not much character or plot development, just lots of animals doing animal things. But a solid children's book and one of the better ones that I've read recently.

Story: Meh
Art: Interesting
Price: $7.99

As I have written about the other books in this series, I love the ambiance of love and security and wonder in this story as well, but as I reflect on this book, it brings to mind another attribute of their ambiance: a feeling of stillness and peace. And this book manages to capture the refreshing crispness of winter. As with the other books, I love to read it to my child slowly, allowing him to take in the scenes to wind him down and to communicate the feeling of peace such a winter setting imparts. It is a simple yet beautiful book.

Such a cute book! The illustrations are adorable and the text is sweet. Everything flows, and while it's geared towards really young, older siblings can get something out of it by pointing out the different animals, counting them, and learning which ones hibernate or go away for the winter and which ones don't. Mama Owl's line that winter's end is a secret no one knows was perfect. Definitely going to read more of these books to my 2yo son.

This little owl is curious about the bear who wants to sleep during the cold weather yet the raccoon thinks he’s missing all the fun. I can relate to the bear as I don’t like the cold. The owl and raccoon have fun watching their cold breath as winter is coming. Then they are fascinated while watching fish swim under the frozen ice. This story shows more of the strange and wonderful things about the nature surrounding us.

Little Owl watches autumn turn into winter, the leaves falling, animal friends preparing, whether food or hibernation. It's unlike anything he's seen before! Little Owl misses their friends, but learns that winter won't last forever. Simple, cute illustrations depicting the shift between seasons and forest critters!

These Little Owl books are nice enough, I just can't get into them. But I do like how little owl and some friends stay active through the winter while other friends hibernate. It would be fun to use this with a class to talk about hibernating animals.

Thanks to Penguin Young Readers for the review copy.

Little Owl's Snow... a sweet description of seasons changing between autumn and winter. The silence of the forest and animals preparing for hibernation is juxtaposed with the little owl's enthusiasm to be with friends. The first snow and seeing fog from breath amaze little owl and the raccoon. Life's little pleasures are best discovered with others. Great story about patience and observing nature. I appreciate the animals not normally featured in stories- hedgehogs, skunks, geese, bears, foxes.

Gotta love Little Owl's adventures. This book shows the mystery and thrill of the first snowfall, and how a familiar world is transformed into soething strange and fun and wonderful. It also shows how different animals react to snow. The clear and large pictures make for a great storytime book (preschool?).

Cute story - this seems like a really nice one for Very Little Ones, both to explain a bit about winter and snow, but also that sometimes you don't get to see your friends for a while (if you can only see them at summer camp, say) but it's still okay.

Also, I just really liked the line "Snow is like a special secret not everyone can know."

A cute but not super original story about Little Owl experiencing winter for the first time, enjoying it but also missing summer and summer friends. Is no one else bothered by Raccoon and Hedgehog living in the same habitat when really they live on completely different continents? Why not use animals that actually live in the same place?

Have enjoyed Little Owl since the first title was published and this is no exception. A good subtle underlying topic in this text about hibernation, some of owls woodland friends are going off to sleep and even when it snows there are still friends to play within the snow. Well done.

As a chill cut through the forest, Little Owl knew something was happening. He watched as many animals changed their behavior, and prepared for the coming winter, and with it snow. Little Owl's first winter, and time to enjoy the snow.
