Based on Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair video game, the sequel to the original video game Danganronpa . The manga series Ultimate Luck and Hope and Despair contains bonus scenes not shown in the video game!
When a new class of students at the (in)famous Hope's Peak Academy find themselves on a surprise school trip to a tropical island, they also find that suspicion and death is the only ticket home from this so-called paradise! Here, in the name of "hope," Ultimate Lucky Student Nagito Komaeda is willing to kill anybody and everybody...including himself!
Not sure how to really review this, but a very important piece of info for this book-- THIS MANGA SHOULD NOT BE YOUR FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH THIS STORY. DO NOT START HERE. Do not expect to be able to read the DR1 manga and continue on to this one. There is a different, newer manga adaptation for DR2, and I'll be reading that after I read this, so I'll have to get back with you on how good of an adaptation that is.
Not only does this manga tell the DR2 story from a different character's perspective, it also relies on the reader having previous knowledge of the DR2 story/game. The DR1 manga and anime are at least comprehensible to people who are new to the franchise, although I've already attested that the anime is a mediocre adaptation of the game (at best) and the manga is a further degradation of the story. This first volume of DR2 is even more of a degradation of the original DR2 story than the DR1 manga was. I'm once again frustrated at the volume-to-content pacing, seeing that we should have roughly five chapters in these three volumes and haven't even finished chapter 1 by the end of this volume. yikes.
This is getting 5 stars because it's Danganronpa and it's NAGITO KOMAEDA, my darling husband. The artwork was weird at times (especially the female bodies and everyone's eyes) but I don't regret buying the volumes at all. It's Komaeda! Pretty much this contains most of chapter 1 and gives you a deep insight of Nagito's insanity. If you are new to the game, it's not for you, because it doesn't care about the investigation or the trial and it won't give you a sense of satisfaction for solving the case. Everything is given at you from the very beginning. But if you want extra material after finishing the second game, you can find it here.
When I first saw this book at my local book store, I pretty much threw myself on it. It was Danganronpa, I had to have it. It was later that I realized that this wasn't just the second game in book form, but the second game in a different point of view. Nagito was definitely one of the most interesting character so I was curious.
This one is definitely not good for people who haven't played the game. It cuts down on the whodunit part of the story (throwing spoilers on who the killer is) to focus on Nagito and his messed up mind. I'm all over this.
Luckily, the fact that this is from Komaeda's POV didn't make me vomit! Has really reinforced for me, however, that the second DR game and the cast of such is my favorite, no matter how deep my love for Ishimaru runs.
I really enjoyed this, but I think that's largely because I A) really like Danganronpa 2 and B) have engaged with a lot of the Danganronpa franchise.
A fan coming from playing only the first game and/or watching the first anime will find that this story probably isn't all that deep, largely because it's not from the central protagonists' viewpoint, but the deuotagonists' viewpoint, which in this case, spoils the entire game.
It definitely offers an interesting point of view, and once I realized it was from a new viewpoint, I really enjoyed this first volume. I'm definitely looking forward to collecting the full run of this series!
Every DanganRonpa storyline is absolutely breathtaking, and my three-star review isn't a criticism of DanganRonpa so much as a strong preference for the videogames over the manga.
That being said: While I was excited about the idea of a book that centers Nagito's perspective, I was a little disappointed in the lack of scenes in which Hajime isn't present. I was expecting more original content that featured Komaeda's experiences and perspectives. Additionally, the girls in the game were already sexualized an uncomfortable amount; there was no need to sexualize them even further in the manga.
Love Danganronpa, love Nagito, the manga just didn’t quite capture the magic of the game. I still enjoyed it, though. Cool art style, even if the girls’ proportions were even more unrealistic than in the game.
I like Danganronpa and Nagito, but the art looks weird. Like the characters look stretched out and the girls skirts are so short that they probably can’t slightly bend without showing cheek.
Being honest, super honest, I thought I would HATE this book. Although I love Nagito with all my heart, The art was a bit “wonky” at times, The dialogue was different from the game, and the pace was SUPER fast. but I can say, with every vein in my body, Danganronpa 2 (Hope and Luck and Despair) by Kazutaka Kodaka is my favorite series of all time, and here’s why.
First of all, the FACES! The faces were extraordinary! I loved when it was the end of Nagito laughing everyone’s expressions were SO accurate! I also love how well they described the body language, and like I said The art gets funky at times but the stances and poses from the actual sprites were so great! Especially Ibuki’s and Mikan’s.
As a Pre-teen, I feel like this should be recommended for Pre-teens that have an understanding of Danganronpa. Mainly because this is for 18+, but if you're able to handle gore and cursing I think that 13+ or even 12 or 11 year olds can handle Danganronpa. This book made me laugh, It made me cry, and it made me angry!
Have you ever found a book that’ll make you question the villain's point of view? Because Danganronpa 2 in general has made me a BIG antagonist-person, just because of Nagito! (and a bit of Kokichi too..) And seeing him as the main character in this book makes me SOOOOO happy! Although I can DEFINITELY not relate to Nagito, I have some similarities with him as well. As a person who has been a fan of blood, gore, and mystery has left me loving Danganronpa! When I saw this at my local bookstore I was super excited to read this series, and I hope you can find love for it too! 🍀💚

A different approach to the danganronpa story, we get to know better the twisted mentality of the antagonist. It's kinda nice to see the situations of the game in his point of view, in his perspective he's doing something good for everyone else.. It really shows how doing something fucked up can seem completely normal for someone with twisted senses but with morals. Nagito it's the kind of character that's difficult to love or to hate, and we get to know a bit more about his past, well mostly some panels. When you think about all the illnesses he has and how in his mind has Naegi Makoto almost as a role-model it helps to understand, not justify, his behaviour. Still, it was a good read to see with other eyes the Danganronpa 2 story.

I did enjoy reading this book before bed, but I do like the original more. This book is the antagonist's point of view. The book is about a group of teenagers sent to a school field trip on an island. Turns out it's actually a killing game hosted by a black and white bear. The original is the protagonist's point of view, and he survives the whole book series. In this one though the antagonist died meaning it ended once he died. I prefer to be able to read the whole killing game, so I'll have to look into finding the original.
Ah okay so I love Danganronpa, and I've been working on reading things that interest me more so I bought my first Manga!!!
Agh it was amazing, the art is absolutely gorgeous, the characters all have so much depth. I just wanna reread it 100 times 😭
My only complaint is the hypersexualization but that happens in every manga. Specifically Mikan, Sonia, Peko and Akane seemed to be victim to this. Mikan especially
I love Danganronpa so much and honestly seeing a book from more of Nagito’s perspective was quite interesting. Definitely didn’t go over as much as the game, which is to be expected since it would take so much time since each chapter takes a while to complete in the game. I liked the art style too. Some of the manga panels made me laugh, the way the faces were drawn just cracked me up. But overall the book was good but compared to the game it lacked in some places.
This book is fine for any fan only curious about the story from Nagito’s perspective up until the middle of chapter three. Halfway into the third volume the second trial is still going, and in chapter three is where Nagito really becomes relevant to the story. It totally would have benefited from having a fourth installment like the THH manga.I also recommend that anyone who reads this to play the games first, as this didn’t make much sense to me prior to playing the game.
It just...wasn’t as good as the game? Um..the art style is pretty bland when compared to the games.. I guess I’m just not a fan of game to manga Or game to anime *glances at persona 5* Ya... Um..I guess the manga made from Nagito’s perspective was entertaining. I love Nagito so it was good enough..just wasn’t really necessary I feel.
Absolutely loved this!! As a huge fan of the danganronpa series I've wanted to read this for over a year now and finally got my hands on a physical copy (I was beyond ecstatic when it arrived). I am definitely gonna re-read this again and again probably like a billion times, the art is beautiful and really does well showing nagitos character.
ok if the comic of sdr2 is a mediocre summary, then does this make this comic an even more mediocre summary of the previous summary?
the art style was god awful and literally nothing happens. i thought this was going to be a retelling from nagitos pov (which it kind of is?) but everything is the same.
The pacing was too fast. With merely one hundred pages read, we're already near the end of the Chapter 1 class trial. I guess it was fanservice for some Nagito fans; personally, I'm not too impressed by the reasoning part or the female anatomy (which constantly emphasizes nipples????). The art style is generally very nice, though.
SDR2 but from Nagito’s perspective which is kind of weird. I always enjoy returning to the danganronpa stories though. The pacing feels a bit off - not sure how they’re going to manage to fit everything in so few volumes, given that volume one isn’t even the entire first chapter…
I honestly really like the art style of this manga, but I'm honestly really shocked on how the end turned out. I'm excited to read the next book because I don't think their anything like the games which I like a lot over all 3 stars I'm excited to read the next volume
