Having now read all 3 installments of this trilogy, I've grown to love the colorful band of recurring characters that populate them all. I only hope that Mr. Barclay someday brings them back to us!

Heinrich Franz is being haunted by dreams of his past. The first of these troubling recollections depicts his childhood as the younger of two boys, taunted by his older brother and abused by his stringent mother. In the midst of his childhood turmoil, Heinrich has developed a secret about himself, one that can never come to light. One day, Heinrich’s older brother, the apple of his mother’s eye, discovers Heinrich’s sordid little secret and threatens to expose him. That was the day Heinrich’s br ...more

However, a former priest is on a mission to save those whose lives are in danger. A young woman, an escapee from the disastrous turmoil of Germany, works together with other refugees in order to start a new life in a new village. No matter what happens, though

Great ending to a gripping series!

If you are looking for an easy read, this is not it!! Like the other two in the series, this last book brims with adventure and intrigue and mystery, together with the worst of human sins. There is so much going on in every chapter that readers are kept fully engaged and on their toes. The plot is complex with many layers, calling for constant attentiveness and raising ongoing questions not easily answered; in the latter case, my every guess on "whodunit" was w
