*Evil Rising* is the third book in the Mortiswood tales series. The series follows the MC, Kaelia, as she discovers that her family has a secret to developing her powers to trying to save humanity. She comes to realise that doing the right thing is not always easy and things are not always what they seem.

Gina Dickerson weaves a wonderful tale. This story is one that had me glued to my Kindle. I just couldn't put it down. Work the next morning was rough.

I was lucky enough to beta read this dark and wonderfully imaginative tale, the third in Gina Dickerson's Mortiswood series. Once again we're following the adventures of Kaelia and Bran, two very different sides of the same coin, and their struggle in the battle against evil. Darker than the first two, it draws you in from the very first action-packed page and the pace hardly lets up throughout. I loved the first two books so when I saw that Gina was releasing a third I immediately offered to review. This book is based on Norse mythology. As I said in the reviews for the previous books I am not all up on Norse Mythology. It extends as far as the Thor films but Gina has provided a very useful glossary at the end.

It has been a few years since I read this series so remembering everything that happened took a little while. This affected the beginning of the book for me. If I had, had the time I would have re-read the first two books so that I had a fresh memory. If you can do this I would recommend it but if you can't it only took me a few chapters to unlock my memories.

We open right in the action with Kaelia fighting a demon. Unfortunately for Kaelia this has become the norm. Ever since Kaelia discovered she is The Chosen one she has been fighting a whole host of evil creatures from Dybbuk demons to The Salloki.

As well as fighting evil Kaelia spends a lot of time fighting herself, her heart, her feelings. It's always been Kaelia and Bay they grew up together and it's rare for one to be without the other but, Bay is Vallesm and Kaelia is The Chosen One. When they created The Chosen One another being was created, Bran. The Dark One. Two Sides of the same coin, one light, one dark. Kaelia is fighting the way she feels for Bran. She can't love him, he's The Dark One. But when they unite and use their powers together there is no other feeling. No one can make her feel like Bran does. But can she trust him?

Gina had me completely torn in this book. Who should Kaelia be with? I can understand the reasons she shouldn't be with Bay but it was so heartbreaking. Then there is Bran. He's the evil one, the one we are all against, right? But, why then did I not hate the scenes when they were together? Why did I actually want them to work together (for good, not evil obviously)?

The ending was a bit of a cliffhanger. I am very intrigued to find out what is going on. I have an inkling but for now I'm going to keep it to myself. This latest instalment of the series will rip your heart into pieces and make you doubt which way Kaelia should turn.

Gina's writing was as addictive as ever. I barely put this book down, only to eat and sleep and even that was a struggle. The pace was spot on. Gina eased you back in at the beginning and then had you racing through the pages during the action and before you know it you have 10% left and you don't want it to end.

If you haven't read this series I would highly recommend it. I cannot wait for the next book. ...more

The story continues with Kaelia having been reunited with her mother and father, but also discovering that her mother is the goddess Vanadis who guided her early on in the tale. After a short time with her family, Kaelia and Bay (her Vallesm boyfriend) must return to their own world to battle with the Salloki and their evil leader Thom, who plan to take over the human Earth. They find that Thom and his new wife Cadence, previously human but now a Draugr, have wreaked havoc in Margate and killed many humans – and these bodies are now inhabited by Salloki souls preparing for battle. Are you keeping up?

Bay is outraged to find that his father, head of the Vallesm (human/wolf), does not believe that his relationship with Kaelia can survive and instructs him to pair with a Vallesm girl. This view point seems to be borne out when Kaelia disappears for weeks with Bran. Do you remember him? Bran and Kaelia are described as the opposite sides to a coin, he the darkness to her light and they draw on the other’s strengths enhancing their own powers. There is an attraction between them that neither can shake off, even if Kaelia desperately wants to for Bay’s sake, and Bran has ulterior motives for winning Kaelia’s trust. Kaelia is experiencing a darker side to her magic now as the darkness seems to speak to her more and more.

Meanwhile Calix, another human friend, has been taken by Thom to be turned into a Draugr – will Kaelia be able to reach him in time? The battles and deceptions rage throughout the tale, until Kaelia is left at the end in no doubt as to what her destiny really means.

It is very difficult to give a succinct outline of the story and give no spoilers…in fact there is so much action in this chapter of the Mortiswood tales that it impossible to make it succinct. It feels like being on a rollercoaster ride as the tale lurches from one action packed event to another with such high energy and speed. I love the way that the realms of the fantasy world are woven into our mundane world, with crucial battle scenes happening at the seafront at Margate! The writing is colourful and bright, painting a great image of the characters and the action – the descriptions of the bone furniture in the Salloki fortress are particularly gruesome! The characters all go from strength to strength – goodies & baddies! - developing their good or evil sides, their mystical powers and using their humanity. The relationships between the characters continue to weave in and out of love, deception, alliances and sworn enemies. This is not the final instalment of the Mortiswood story and Ms Dickerson leaves us on the edge of our seats with a cliff-hanger…..

Another thoroughly enjoyable, easy to read tale – Mortiswood remains a guilty pleasure for this middle-aged mum!! 4 stars.
