In Summary

Wandering Witch continues with several tales about idiots and a few that portray humanity in a dim light. If you like Elaina’s brand of snark, you’ll get it in spades. However, if you’re seeking a strong story arc, character development, or something uplifting, look elsewhere.

The Review

Wandering Witch continues into Volume 2 with another fourteen short stories about Elaina’s encounters with different people and places. Unfortunately, none were particularly fun or gripping, and I found myself less invested in Elaina than when I started.

Part of this is because Elaina is the one thing these stories have in common, and there’s virtually no character development for her. In Volume 1, we at least got to see her mature during her path to becoming a witch under her mentor. There’s none of that growth in Volume 2. Actually, it’s worse because Elaina’s inconsistent as a character. In the previous volume, she was introduced as an unfettered spirit who travels randomly and scrapes by using bogus fortune-telling. In Volume 2’s “Before the Snow Melts,” she abruptly informs us that she’s occasionally duty-bound to “help solve some country’s problems” as if she’s a pillar of society. Moreover, her champion-of-justice fervor for the orphaned beastkin Elise and her righteous attitude towards the official who summoned her are at odds with her flippant indifference toward the injured robbery victim in “Regarding the Bomb.”

Another reason I didn’t enjoy the stories is because the majority of Elaina’s encounters are with idiots. Saya, the creepy stalker girl from Volume 1, returns in “The Country of Truth Tellers” as an inept representative of the United Magic Association tasked with helping an even more inept witch undo a spell she cast for an ungrateful king. Their bumbling antics are supposed to be comic, but they just come off as tiresome. In “A Paradise for the Resurrected,” Elaina goes out of her way to rescue ten people from a zombie-infested town, only for them to reject escape at the last minute and wind up zombies themselves. And “The People Who Hunt the Lazy” is particularly pointless. There’s no real cause or resolution to the supposed job truancy crisis, and the whole concept of Elaina “taking a break from [her] travels” is preposterous because her behavior while on “vacation” is no different than usual.

Extras include the first six pages printed in color, five black-and-white illustrations, and afterword.

This is a much darker volume than the first - something I initially thought I was imagining until the author mentioned it in his afterword. That does give the book a grimmer, more depressing feel, but the stories' ability to touch on a basic theme or truth remains, and even if it ends on a Sad Animal Story (my personal least favorite genre; thanks, Wilson Rawls), it's still one of the more interesting light novels currently being published in English.

Finally, I have finished a book outside of Goosebumps this year!

A bit darker than the last volume but there's still some lighter fare sprinkled in the mix. Surprisingly few adapted in the anime but I suppose when constructing a more visual narrative it's necessary to be selective.

The standout titles for me: A Runaway Princess, Pursued by Whom?; Before the Snow Melts; A Paradise for the Resurrected; For the Sake of My Hometown; The Ancient Country and the Divine Cat's Reincarnation.

Elaina's journeys continue with more short stories. I like this format. It's like buying a variety pack of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get.

Some of them are short and silly, like "Pioneers of Style". A light read and enjoyable. Some of them are quite heavy, filled with both positive and negative emotion, like "Before the Snow Melts". That one was an experience. Then there are some that are technically tragedies, but the tone of the story and the attitude of its protagonist make them merely a curious event.

By having story stories of a traveler, the author can do all this and more. Elaina is not an adventurer, going on quests for fame or fortune. She is not a knight-errant, seeking wrongs to right. She is a tourist, seeking only to see what is beyond the next hill. So, it's easy to write her in and out of the stories she encounters.

For those seeking something bigger, there is a continuity here! Elaina unexpectedly reunites with an old friend, one who wears a familiar pointy hat. Yes, Saya returns!

This one was a lot darker than the first, but the same thing that I said about volume one also applies.
What this one does do differently was that for one of the stories, Elaina went back, so there was an actual conclusion to that country (which honestly is a little rare) and I found that with the first volume that was not explored or touched upon. Whereas I found with this volume the author had a lot more of conclusions to the stories than it did with the first volume. Although I have to say that I do miss that sometimes the side characters that pop up periodically through the book.
One of the other reviewers on this site said something about an entire chapter devoted to the author's homophobia. Personally, I did not feel this way about that chapter, but I will not fault that other reviewer for seeing it as such. The entire chapter felt uninformed about homosexual couples more than any actual blatant homophobia or prejudice of any sort.
I think I will give this series one more volume to try, but if nothing comes of it, than I may have to forego pursuing this series.

More like a 3.5, this book was much better than the first one. A little bit more brutal in some cases. Some fluffy stories, some kinda creepy. Pretty well balanced.

I really like some of the more darker stories. Sadly, I read somewhere that in the latter volumes, they aren't a lot of dark stories. But let's see.

Slow paced story, better than the anime version, just a slice of life, so not a lot of action, but still entertaining. Onto my net adventure, Happy Readings!!!

-No te preocupes.
