Strange storms have beset the coastal community of Mendocino, California.
And even stranger beings . . .
This is the private diary of Piper Pastore, chronicling the final weeks before she and her family used their otherworldly abilities to rip open a hole in space-time and become lost in the Anomoly.
Discover their journey, and the story of Meow Wolf’s of Eternal Return, here among the pages of her diary.
What a cool addition to the Meow Wolf narrative. Beautifully illustrated too! The amount of effort that was put into the underlying story of the House of Eternal Return is mind-boggling. One of the best installations and immersive art experiences. Piper’s journal offers wonderful insight and clues to what became of the Pastore family.
A tricky one to rate. Does this stand on its own? No. Is it beautifully constructed and absolutely essential to understanding what's going on in House of Eternal Return? Yes.
If I could buy a copy of all the written stuff in every meowwolf, I would 😭 there’s SO much put into this journal and it’s just a tiny piece of the story.
3.5 Better as it goes. It’s been awhile since I visited Meow Wolf and at first I thought Piper was the yound girl because this is a very immature diary. I doubt an adult woman, even an artist, would write in a diary like this (spirals, different colored pens). Especially not at the beginning when she’s depressed. But then the Meow Wolf magic kicks in and I was transported back and bathing in the non-linear, multi-dimensional, multi-format magic that is HOER.
What an absolute flex for an art museum to have a companion novel to help you understand the world of the ARG they created. Meow Wolf's House of Eternal Return in Santa Fe is one of the coolest places I've ever been and this book doesn't stand on its own. It kind of does, but it mostly stands as supplementary reading material for after you've visited the house. But like, how cool is that. I give Meow Wolf and the House of Eternal Return five stars.
This book only makes sense in the context of a visit to the Meow Wolf experience in Santa Fe. It's sold in their gift shop and provides possibly useful background to the mystery incorporated into the house you explore there. A quick read: not only is it brief, but many of the pages incorporate drawings and fancy graphics.
This book is probably only cool for people who have been to Meow Wolf. Now I can’t wait to go again and know what I’m looking for. A really cute addition to the experience.
Not really a novel or diary that would make any sense to anyone, UNLESS you go to Meow Wolf. Once you go it starts to (kinda sorta) click. I didn't quite understand the book or the experience...but the book definitely helped--not that you really need to 'get' either though--as the house is just so super cool, and it changed my view as to what a museum experience can/should become.
Okay, this was such an interesting read! While I definitely would only recommend this book if you have been to, The House of Eternal Return exhibit in New Mexico, it's worth it if you have been there and are interested in investigating the story further. 🙃 I liked:
I loved that the writing and format of this journal was varied and different throughout the read! It made each page an adventure and a different experience and kept the journal fresh. In addition, the drawings and pictures included were also a treat that I enjoyed a ton.
I also loved that this book told the story of the exhibit naturally and answered the questions I had after exploring the exhibit in person. It was really awesome for me, who really was interested in the story and lore in the house.
Lastly, I liked that this was a quick read because I think that I would have been bored if the book was too long.
Literally the only downside is that you kinda need to know the background of the exhibit that this book goes with to fully enjoy it.
The first time I went to Meow Wolf in Santa Fe, I spent half my time exploring the winding art installation and the other half in the very first room, reading a binder filled with story that explained a lot of what I was seeing. I left feeling like I knew everything about the place.
Years later, I go back to Meow Wolf and explore even more than I saw the first go around. I did not know everything about the place. I spent the entire time looking for every spot I could find and crawl space I could squeeze through. This time I’m confident I found everything. Picking up this book at the gift shop and reading it unveils even more about the story and purpose behind everything than I was able to pick up walking through exhibits. Now im reviewing everything I saw in hopes of piecing together the puzzle. Now I’ve got to go back and do it again.
TL;DR - Reading this will bring a new light to the exhibit. It’ll answer many questions but it will lead you on a whole new path. If you’re looking for a map of the place, this book is the starting point.
So if you're interested in reading this book then you've probably already been through Meow Wolf's Santa Fe installation "House of Eternal Return". You may be holding a copy in the gift shop and looking for reviews or you may have already bought and read the book. What's important is that you know that this is a companion to "House of Eternal Return". It's essentially the run up to the events of the installation. A prequel.
Your enjoyment of this book is going to depend entirely on if you enjoyed the experience of wandering the house.
Taken as a companion to the house I like it. It gives some context and deepens the mystery. It is, however, by no means necessary to enjoy the experience of the house or to understand what's going on.
If you haven't been through "House of Eternal Return" then this is going to be an extremely frustrating read, because it ties directly into the experience. You owe it to yourself to check out the Meow Wolf's fascinating work.
Such a creative and in depth addition to the meow wolf exhibit, house of eternal return!! And such a cute journal. Someone said that it looked immature but being honest I am an adult woman who was very drawn to the style of the journal so :p colored pens are for everyone
It doesn’t help this book that I randomly found it at goodwill knowing nothing about it other than it was written in diary form which I love. And the random art in it is nice too. But the story didn’t make a lot of sense to me not knowing the art installation it goes with.
Can't stop thinking about everything and everything related to The House of Eternal Return--most infectious brainworm I've had in a while, and I love it.
I think it is a wonderful idea having this supplemental way of telling the Meow Wolf story. I remember when I actually went to the exhibit and found the diary, I thought to myself "I could spend the whole day looking through this." Actually having that chance to sit down and find all the references to the exhibit was really cool. It is a great way to enter back into that world despite the fact that I'm halfway across the country.
