My first introduction to Brian Beatty was through his comedy, his larger-than-life, on-stage bearded persona as Minnesotan funny man. And public radio seems to fit him. Beatty can also strum musical instruments adeptly enough to admit in a poem the secret music that I hear appears unplayable. And for years now he has felt like family to me, though we’ve never met. Dust and Stars: Miniatures is a tight collection of tight poems. There’s humor here, but also reflection and kindheartedness. A very enjoyable read.

Brian Beatty has published four poetry collections: Borrowed Trouble, Dust and Stars: Miniatures (Cholla Needles Press, 2019 and 2018), Brazil, Indiana (Kelsay Books, 2017) and Coyotes I Couldn't See (Red Bird Chapbooks, 2016). His chapbook sequence Hobo Radio: Magpies and Crows is due out from Ravenna Press in 2021.
