She debuted in 1987 with Natsufuku no Erii (Jap: 夏服のエリー) on the manga anthology Bessatsu Hana to Yume published by Hakusensha. She is best known for her gothic manga works, such as the Earl Cain series (Jap: 伯爵カイン, Hakushaku Cain) and Angel Sanctuary (Jap: 天使禁猟区, Tenshi Kinryōku)
Her work is typically serialized in one of Hakusensha's two shōjo manga anthologies, Bessatsu Hana to Yume and Hana to Yume. In 2010, Kaori Yuki was one of many manga artists whose work would appear in the new shōjo manga anthology Aria by the publisher Kodansha on July 28, 2010. Her doujinshi-ka name is MoonClock.
I am really grateful that Kaori Yuki decided to keep her original one-shot "Ludwig Revolution" open ended and even more so that she decided to continue with the story.
Ludwig and Wilhelm are still on their journey through Fairytale Land to find a bride of the Prince and of course hijinks happens.
The gothic style is magnificent, the humor just as morbid as in the first volume and Ludwig and unusual protagonist, who shouldn’t work because somehow does. Will just loveable and naive and their weird friendship just so endearing.
Joining their travels is S&M obsessed witch Dorothea (that’s a sentence I just wrote) who is not exactly welcome, but feels like a natural part of the group.
The Grimm retellings are just as much fun as they were in part 1 of the story. Twisted and dark and probably not everyone’s taste and yet a thoughtful commentary on the darkness that has always been there in the originals (I mean it’s not like Disney tells you).
It’s also amusing how on the outside shallow Ludwig enters those fairytales and actually helps people with his interference.
Yuki also dives deeper into a more overarching story arc. She brings back Red Riding Hood aka Will‘s childhood friend Lisette and the one lasting consequence of Ludwig‘s antics. The traumatized girl now makes her money as an assassin and much to her own joy, her target is no other than the prince.
Lisette is probably the most interesting of the characters. She clearly wants revenge and tries to be the killer the she sees herself as, but there are still glimpses of the girls she once was, especially when her confusing feelings for Will come through.
With Lisette come also the people who hired her and the true villains to Lui‘s story. And yeah those are crazy.
Re-reading the series has been a lot of fun so far and I hope that Volume 3 will hold up as well.
One thing that really recommends a book to me is some relation to fairy tales. Ludwig Revolution is a manga which has many such retellings, such as Snow White, Cinderella, The Sleeping Beauty, Hansel & Gretel and Red Riding Hood. In the past, I had read another manga, called Grimms Manga, attempting the same thing but I was rather disappointed. Luckily, this wasn't the case here, although I have to admit that I didn't expect what I got to read.
Prince Ludwig along with his loyal servant Wilhelm go on a journey, in order to find a suitable wife for the prince. Naturally, most of those maids happen to be the well-known characters from the fairy tales. Each princess/character has at least a chapter that develops her story. But like the originals the stories take dark and twisted turns. Nothing is like it seems and no-one is as virtuous as was expected. Indeed, Ludwig himself has a tendency towards necrophilia, Snow White sleeps with her father, Red Riding Hood killed her parents and Hansel and Gretel are assassins.
There seems to be a running theme where I spend the entire chapter confused until I get to the final pages. I still really liked this though. ‘Maid Maleen’ was one of those fairy tales that I’ve never heard of before, so it was interesting trying to figure out where the storyline was going. The twist kind of came out of nowhere though. It seems like the majority of these princesses Ludwig runs into . The shining star had to be the chapter retelling ‘The Goose Girl’. Oh my god, I loved how . I know that probably sounded super complicated, but hopefully it made sense. The execution was on point and I loved how that whole situation unraveled.
Ludwig Revolution #2: 4 Stars [6.52 - really great]
This was a great Volume. I especially loved the last two chapters. Seeing how Kaori Yuki plays with these fairytales and puts twist and turns on them is great. Kathren is kinda one of my fave charas in this manga series now. Willhelm is still and will forever be the favorite though. My poor son^^
I am very excited to get into the final two volumes - especially since they are gonna have one three parter each and a fairytale I love in addition to those. I am way too excited that the final chapter in this series will be based on the blue light - I LOVE that fairytale so much ♥
it does get repetitive very easy... big boobed princess, he likes her for tiddys, something goes wrong, they dont get married, he goes looking for another one...
I enjoyed this episode more, it shows far more of Ludwig and why he is the way he is. Still as dark and twisted as the past but with far more story interwoven with story. It shows modern leanings but at the same time also brings into focus some of the darker underbellies of spells that can be glossed over in modern retellings.
I guess I'm getting attached to these characters because I bumped it up a star for this volume. :3
This volume contains retellings of Rapunzel, Maid Maleen, The Frog Prince, and The Goose Girl. Hansel and Gretel make an appearance, but we don't get their story til the next volume.
We're also introduced to more of Prince Lui's family. He has a half brother and guess what?- He doesn't like Lui too much. Dun Dun Dunn! While Lui's off trying to find a wife, this little brother of his is trying to unseat him as the heir. Oh yeah and his mom's a witch.
this manga is CRAZY but crazy good. I love the twists I think that what makes the manga so captivating. and I just...can't get enough. I totally recommand this to anyone who loves fairytailes.
