“All you need is the desire to make beautiful things happen on canvas…” —Bob Ross
In 1982, The Joy of Painting made its debut on public television. The unrehearsed, unedited show soon became a favorite among aspiring artists and painters. Almost 40 years and 403 episodes after his on-air debut, and decades after his untimely passing, Bob Ross still has enormous global popularity as a beloved painter, affable TV personality, and cultural icon.
With this guide, you can learn to paint a happy tree in seconds, just like Bob Ross! Painting with Bob Ross introduces you to the tools and materials you need to paint beautiful landscapes, as well as basic painting techniques, such as how to load your brush and how to paint with a knife.
Following the introduction are 16 painting projects, each with a complete list of tools and materials needed and instructions for preparing the canvas. Jump into painting with step one, then follow the full-color painting progressions and clearly written instructions until you’ve reached the final step—and your new, joyful work of art! This is the only Bob Ross book with all-color images.
Even if you’re brand new to painting, remember that Bob said, “Talent is nothing more than a pursued interest. All you need to paint is a few tools, a little instruction, and a vision in your mind.” Throughout this book, Bob’s quotes encourage you to keep going.
So grab your copy of Painting with Bob Ross, relax and unwind, and paint a Bob Ross-inspired landscape! You can paint graceful mountains, ocean waves crashing onto rocks, a winter cabin, a lakeside path, a deep forest river, and many more breathtaking views. And don’t forget to sign each of your masterpieces once you’ve completed the last step!

Painting with Bob Ross Learn to paint in oil step by step! by Bob Ross Inc is a book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary. I have watched Bob Ross videos all my life and have many of his books. I watched his videos just because he was fascinating and calming to watch! Because I did watch so much, I can read between the lines in this book. This has 16 projects in step by step picture/info steps but because these projects are so advanced, I think a total beginner would not be able to do manage without watching his videos prior to reading this book. Having an idea of what he does would help. Anyone that has watched his videos and has some art behind them, this would be great! A beginner that has watched Bob would probably do alright too.
In the book, he gives the tools and what paints you will need for each project. Lovely art, different places and landscapes. Miss him so much..:(

It's Bob Ross! If you fondly remember watching him paint on PBS, you will enjoy this book. It gives you flashbacks to your childhood memories, but also a great guide for painting. I have been wanting to take-up painting for decades, so I am hoping to start this summer.
***I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from the publisher through Edelweiss & NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.***

My husband and stepdaughter used to watch Bob Ross all the time on PBS, so I was excited to discover “Painting with Bob Ross: Learn to paint in oil step by step!”

This joyful guide teaches artists the basics of painting landscapes with Ross’ specially formulated oil paints. Features his signature “happy accidents” approach that makes challenging subjects less formidable and more fun for artists at all levels. Also includes never-before-published art instruction and text by the beloved artist himself. Highly recommended!

Thanks to Quarto Publishing Group – Walter Foster and NetGalley for the review copy. Opinions are fully mine.

Who doesn't know Bob Ross and his landscape paintings? I was fascinated by his technique and the resulting paintings.
With this book you can learn his technique step by step and recreate some of the landscape paintings and, of course, learn how to make your own.

Is there anyone who doesn't love Bob Ross? I grew up watching him paint happy little trees and clouds even though I've never picked up a brush for painting more than walls or furniture. I'm not sure I ever knew he lived in Alaska for a time. I wonder now if he played a small part in my moving to Alaska after high school. Maybe he planted that seed! I always loved his forest and mountain paintings best. This book gives step by step instruction to create many beatiful scenes. Do I think a total newb could recreate these paintings with the book alone? I know I couldn't. But I do think this book is a great companion for the videos or for someone with a bit of experience. Know an artist? Or a wanna be artist? Or just someone who appreciates Bob? They would love this book! It made me smile the whole way through and I could hear Bob's soothing voice in my head.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book... and for the trip down memory lane. All comments are my own, unbiased opinion.

Painting with Bob Ross: Learn to paint in oil step by step! by Bob Ross Inc. is everything you’re hoping it is. If you’re anything like me, you grew up with a love and admiration for the man behind the happy little clouds, Mr. Bob Ross.
This book starts with The Bob Ross story then dives into the best tools and materials to use at home. I really enjoy that this book cover some basic painting techniques before the book dives instructions on how to create some of Bob’s most notable works. The layout and design of this book make it feel like an art piece of its own.
I can not wait to buy this book and add it to my library! It will go right next to my Bob Ross Funko Pop.
I received a review copy of this ebook from Quarto Publishing Group – Walter Foster,
Walter Foster Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

This review originally published in Looking For a Good Book. Rated 2.5 of 5
You would have to be very young or have lived a very sheltered life to not know who Bob Ross was. Even if you've never seen his painting show (live or a rerun) the good-natured parodies are still occasionally aired.
I grew up expecting to make a career for myself in art - mostly fine drawing, but some painting, though my last actual class in oil painting was waaaaay back in high school. I've continued to work in art as a passionate hobby (see my blog for reviews of other art books) but working in oil paints is something I've never quite learned well and would like to know better. And here comes Painting With Bob Ross: Learn to Paint in Oil Step by Step! Perfect timing!
The problem with trying to learn an art form - any art form - simply by a book is that no matter how many 'steps' you include something is missing. And too often (at least for me) you can look at the pictures of the different steps and think "wait...how did they get all that?!"
I don't have the background in oil paints that I'd like and I'll admit that I was lost really early on in this book. One of the earlier chapters is "Basic Painting Techniques". I know the materials and a general concept of oil painting (and how it's different from watercolors and acrylics [which I've used]) but I didn't understand the concept of 'loading two colors' or how to use a paint knife (I've never used one). Without seeing this in action I really couldn't quite understand it. And unfortunately, if you don't understand this basic technique, the rest of the book is near;y pointless since it is used in every painting featured here. And no matter how well you explain it ("Pull your paint mixture out very flat on your palette, hold the knife straight up and “cut” across the mixture to load the long edge of the blade with a small roll of paint. Holding the knife straight up will force the small roll of paint to the very edge of the blade. ") it really does need to be seen.
Something I also hadn't really noticed before until I read through this book was how many of the paintings look alike. This is formulaic painting. This is fine as the results can be beautiful to look at and cathartic to paint.
The book recommends not just certain types of paints or brushes, but specific brands as well. I always find this highly suspicious. It feels like advertising and that the book is there to sell paints or thinners or brushes - not to help people paint. Now if there was mention of why the specific items (blends better, doesn't leave bristle hairs, etc), then perhaps I'd feel better about it.
Even though this is labeled as a 'learn to paint' book, I don't feel quite prepared enough to read the book and put my own brush or knife to canvas (and I had some canvasses ready). However, I still would like to try some of these techniques, but I think I need to get a little more basic learning before I'm ready for it.
Looking for a good book? Painting with Bob Ross by Walter Foster Creative Team is a nice looking book but the reader will need a little more skill than being ready to "Learn to paint" to take advantage of the lessons in this book.
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher, through Edelweiss, in exchange for an honest review.

I grew up watching The Joy of Painting. Bob Ross made oil painting look so magical. His encouraging words have stuck with me. He's the reason that I started painting (though not just oil painting) as an adult. I'd highly recommend his videos, though I'll mention his system requires that you buy his brand of paint and tools if you want to follow his methods exactly.
Painting with Bob Ross shows how to paint 16 of Bob Ross' paintings. The book started by describing the basic techniques of how to load the brush and such and then how to paint a basic tree, mountain, etc. This section was clearly explained, though it's even easier to follow if you can watch Bob Ross do it on a video. The 16 paintings are signed Bob Ross paintings, which suggested to me that there might be videos showing Ross painting them. Yup. I put several of the painting's titles into YouTube (like "Bob Ross Forest River") and it pulled up the original PBS video showing Bob Ross painting the scene.
So you can watch every step fully explained and demonstrated in real time on the video. So is the book still useful? It tended to have steps like, "Use these colors to make a dark green and follow the tree technique to create a line of trees at the base of the mountain." The accompanying illustration showed what the end result should approximately look like. Basically, if you're familiar with Bob Ross' method, this book should be fairly easy to follow and will help you produce a wide variety of landscapes. If you're a complete beginner or have no idea who Bob Ross is, you might be better off watching the videos.

Painting with Bob Ross is the newest tutorial book from Walter Foster and Quarto Publishing. Due out 4th Sept, 2018, it's 128 pages and available in paperback format.
I think almost everyone has Bob Ross memories. Mine usually involved gasping in shock and thinking he had totally ruined the painting he was working on. He always made it gorgeous of course and along the way slipped in a few lessons in his life philosophy. Relax, breathe, go with the moment and have fun.
This book brought back such great memories for me of watching his public broadcasting show and listening to him talking about painting and life.
The book includes 16 project tutorials with supplies and preparation as well as a large full colour photo of the project. The intro pages are followed by step by step tutorials for laying in background, washes, detail and finishing.
There are also original Bob Ross quotes interspersed in the tutorial chapters.
It felt like a really lovely visit with a good friend.
Five stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

I received a copy of Painting with Bob Ross through NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This is a really fun art book that reminded me so very much of the Bob Ross painting show…and I really do miss that show. This book is perfect for anybody that wants to learn to oil paint, as well as for any fans of the late Bob Ross. If you’ve watched all of his shows and want something a bit newer, this might be perfect for you. Even if you haven’t watched his shows, the painting guides in here are very well laid out.
Bob Ross always had a talent for breaking up the painting process and laying it all out for the aspiring artist. Thankfully this book managed to recreate that ability fairly well. It’s not quite the same as watching the show – however you also don’t have to be afraid about not keeping up with him either, as you decide when to turn the page.
What I really loved about this book is that they took the time to share some of Bob Ross’ history with us. I can honestly tell you that I didn’t know a lot of what was included in it, so it was very informative for me. Having this as the introduction was a really nice touch – it felt like they were honoring him.

Walter Foster Publishing and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Painting with Bob Ross: Learn to pain in oil step by step! I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.
Readers who grew up watching Bob Ross on local television will absolutely delight in Painting with Bob Ross. This book includes all of his techniques, as well as his famous phrases such as "happy little trees" and "Let's go crazy, what the heck!"
The most interesting part of the book for me was the biography, as Bob's personal story was not part of the television show. His charm and calm demeanor helped inspire generations of would-be artists. Beginners can easily learn the Bob Ross method with this book, as it includes the tools and techniques for success. Readers are able to create their own paintings using their own brushes, as the book includes step-by-step instructions for some of those works. Creating landscape paintings, including seascapes, mountains, and winter scenes is possible with Painting with Bob Ross. This book is an idea gift for those who are fans of Bob Ross and who desire to learn his techniques.

Painting with Bob Ross: Learn to Paint in Oil Step-by-Step will teach you oil painting techniques while brightening your day. The tone of the book is much like watching Ross's television show and the techniques presented will teach you how to paint using Ross's painting techniques.
At the start of the book you will find information on how to select paints, brush cleaners, solvents and painting equipment. Throughout the book you will find well illustrated paint projects that show the process from start to finish. Some of the projects you will find in this book include:
Winter Mist
Around the Bend
Teton Winter
Nature's Splendor
Painting with Bob Ross is a Walter Foster art book and Walter Foster art books are some of the best art books around when learning new techniques.
Recommend.

If you like painting landscapes, Bob Ross’s book, Learn To Paint In Oil Step By Step, is a great book to start with. For beginners, he starts by introducing the supplies you will need and does a good job specifying which brush to use and how to use it throughout the book. He also does a good job explaining the color theory.
Many of his paintings are challenging for the more advanced as well. All of his paintings are landscapes. Some of them are more unique by painting a landscape through a window. There is a wide variety of landscapes including day, night, and different seasons. Of course, there are a few happy trees and happy accidents that happen along the way. I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about oil painting.

Bob Ross made some of the most beautiful and colorful paintings. His wet on wet technique has been used by many to create lovely artwork. I've used it myself several times and it was very helpful learning this style of painting.
This book explains all the tools and techniques that he uses including many colorful photos. If you want to paint lovely paintings like Bob then you need this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Quarto Publishing Group- Walter Foster Publishing through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Unfortunately I did not enjoy this book - it is hard to make a Bob Ross book without his calming voice, because while the paintings are great, what attracts people to Bob Ross is his nature and his gentle encouragement. However, you do not get this from the book.
(Plus I wasn't the biggest fan of promoting a certain brand of paints...)

Having watched MANY a Bob Ross video on you tube I wondered if a book would have quite the same charm. I shouldn't have been concerned.
Each project is broken down into clearly pictured and described sections, each explaining why this step is done and what tools to use.

Terrible in Kindle Format
I imagine in paper format, this would be a pretty good book. But, in Kindle format, it’s extremely challenging. The displayed pics are at wrong display angles, making it challenging.
Disappointed with format, not the book.

Nice detail, step-by-step-ish instructions, and plain fun. Do wish the paintings referenced specific episodes, though.

Memories of watching Bob Ross cane flood back as I perused this book. It’s notable for its connection to art and vivid design. A book I would gladly recommend to artists and fellow arts-based researchers.

A great book for fans of Bob Ross and his happy little trees, clouds and mountains.
I love Bob Ross, over the years, he has inspired me to paint, use my imagination and turn paint and canvas into something incredible.
This book has a brief history of Bob Ross, the tools and techniques needed to paint the subsequent pictures. A great mixture of mountain, water and meadow scenes with references back to each technique used. All is sure to inspire your inner artist.
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for my honest opinion.

Reading this wonderful book Painting with Bob Ross bought great memories came back with me and my mum watching Bob Ross when I was a teenager (blimey that was over 30 years ago!) on our old Television, and nagging her and my grandad to buy me art products, so Birthday and Christmas presents were easy for them to get me. Bob inspired me to pick up a paint brush and start to learn to paint etc. By watching these over and over, I created those lovely pictures. He made so easy to do. However, mine never looked like his but they were unique and painted by me.
Painting with Bob Ross book is crammed with so much information throughout this book. You will find 16 painting projects, each with a complete list of tools and materials needed. It has step-by-step illustrations on how to create some graceful mountains, ocean waves crashing onto rocks, a winter cabin, a lakeside path, a deep forest river, these illustrations are just Brilliant.
This is a joyful book and if you love Bob Ross you will love his new book written by Bob Ross Inc. You never get bored with his paintings and how he explains how to create them.
Well Done for a brilliant and colourful book. Plus highly recommended by Me.
Thanks to Quarto Publishing Group – Walter Foster and NetGalley for the review copy.

I should preface this by saying I own no oils (or acrylics) which are the paints that will work best for Bob Ross tutorials. My art skills are stuck at perma newbie and I usually use pencils, pens, and watercolors and I tend to stick to not very realistic faces, flowers, and cats. Not the widest range but I enjoy it. I also want to improve, so Bob Ross landscapes? Yes, please.
I will say that this book is definitely 5 stars BUT with a caveat: if, like me, you haven't worked in oils I would highly recommend watching some of his videos (there's an official Bob Ross channel on YouTube) so that you get a feel for the different techniques used before you rely on the book alone, I understood intellectually most of the techniques in this book, but watching them in action helps me anyway.
If you've ever seen a "The Joys of Painting" episode, this book stays true to the show. Some of his better known sayings are here (Happy Little accidents, anyone?). The techniques are the same. It's just in book form. As I said, I do feel that watching some videos is important to truly understand how he paints. That said, I also feel like sometimes when you're working on anything artsy or craftsy, you don't really want to have a video that you have to keep pausing, rewinding, etc. That's where this books comes in. Once you know what you're doing, you can paint anywhere you want but still have a Bob Ross tutorial with you.
Even if you don't want to work in oils or have no interest in landscapes, I'd still recommend this book and/or his videos. It's very useful for understanding the layout of such things. I feel like that knowledge can be translated to other mediums, even if they work best for oils.

I remember watching Bob Ross on public television in amazement with how a blank canvas could become a stunning painting in the space of 30 minutes. There was no magic to it. It was just a matter of seeing the possibilities and following the instructions. Over the years, although I have become busy with raising children, going to work and the myriad other things that take over a person’s time, one thing remains clear to me. Creating art is one of the best therapies that can be found, and this book can help you create some beautiful artwork. The instructions are simple, plain, and clear. The illustrations alongside the instructions are the same. Step by step, you will use simple motions and see them resulting in skies, waves, trees, mountains, etc. to produce breathtaking scenery. Interspersed throughout the book are some of the comments Bob would make on his show. So, it is like hearing his voice encouraging you and giving pointers. Whether you are a budding artist or looking to enhance your skills, you will enjoy using this book.

Good new book for all those following along on streaming networks. Covers all the basics of what you need and how to get painting.

I received a digital version of this book from the publisher and NetGalley, thus I offer my honest and voluntary review.
I grew up learning to paint with Bob Ross on TV. This book is a bundle of happy little clouds and landscapes dotted with fun and happy little trees, providing smiles with the oil painting lessons. A brief bio of Ross is included. It's a decent intro to oil painting book, and would make a great gift for yourself or for any artistic person in your life.

received a copy of this book from NetGalley for a honest review.
3 1/2 stars
Painting with Bob Ross, I was super excited to see this book come up because I use to watch Bob Ross on TV and was constantly amazed at how easy he made painting seem. This book has a lot of great pictures and step by step instructions but in my opinion it really doesn't compare to watching Bob Ross teach you how to paint. I think it's a great companion book but not a stand alone. Thank you to the publishers for the opportunity to review this book.

May 9, 2019I have been an admirer of Bob Ross since I started getting interested in painting. This book helped me understand his technique in a more visual learning experience rather than with watching videos which was more kinesthetic learning. While I don't really use oil paints, I was able to apply some techniques using acrylics. It was a fun approach and I would like to explore the practice a lot more, although when using acrylics, I had to use a lot of extenders to apply his technique better.
