Very cool. Attention is applied to most unusual attributes and processes in math development.
Math and physics are such fascinating fields. One of the reasons is that they are omnipresent in every domain and everything around us revolve around them.
Mickaël Launay does a great job popularizing math in this book by examples chosen, mostly in the second half of the book. First part didn’t bring anything new for me, starting from the beginning of math, discovery of the ‘Arabic’ numbers by Indians, Archimedes to Pythagoras, Fibonacci to Pascal, etc. I guess I know more about the ancient math ...more

Jeg grinte lidt, da denne bog havnede hos mig – jeg har altid hadet matematik – men jeg blev også ret nysgerrig, for jeg elsker simpelthen en god fortælling (og jeg elsker i øvrigt også historie). Bogens allerførste sætning er “Åh, jeg har altid været så dum til matematik!”, og så var jeg selvfølgelig fanget.

Studiujesz matematykę? Podziwiam cię. Ja za nigdy jej nie lubiłam. - Już nawet przestałam liczyć ile razy słyszałam te słowa. I to nie tylko od osób, które uznają się za humanistów. Wyrazy podziwu słyszę również od znajomych z liceum, z którymi chodziłam na rozszerzoną matematykę i fizykę. Bon, ce serait plus un 3,75 (3,80 haha) car même si ça se lit bien, que c'est entraînant etc, presque sur un ton badin, "ne vous inquiétez de rien", "pas de panique", ça reste tout de même très mathématique, et moi qui aime les maths, j'ai trouvé ça tout de même fastidieux par moment. Mais ça coule tout seul quand même si on ne s'attache pas trop aux détails ou à essayer de comprendre à tout prix la démo dont il est question.
Loved it.. started slowly.. gives a great history of the evolution of Maths. You might always get a feeling that the author should have given more focus on a particular area given your bent. I loved it overall.
Невеличка книга про історію математики і як та коли виникли різні дисципліні, від арифметики до фракталів та мат статистики. Загалом цікаво, але дуже поверхнево поданий матеріал, видно шо писав молодий автор. Ну і деякі факти в книзі визивали сумніви, як наприклад твердження що тюрінг розробив свою машину чисто теоретично. Французи.
Launay nos lleva desde el principio de los tiempos para contarnos el inicio de la historia de las matemáticas, hasta la actualidad con la aparición de las computadoras. Todo esto contado con anécdotas e ilustraciones simples que permiten entender el descubrimiento de una ecuación y al mismo tiempo asimilar el proceso de la solución y la aplicación a un problema real y actual. Me gustó y lo mejor de todo, lo entendí.

Pour beaucoup, les mathématiques sont une matière qui fait peur et dont beaucoup n'en voit pas l'utilité. (Qui n'a jamais dit ou entendu dire: en quoi connaître le théorème de Pythagore peut me servir dans la vie ?). Personnellement, j'ai toujours beaucoup aimé les maths. Elles exercent sur moi un émerveillement à la fois incompréhensible et magique.

Vào Đại học, điều mà mình - một tân sinh viên nhớ nhất trong buổi gặp mặt với thầy giáo chủ nhiệm khoa đó là: Nếu ai đó lập luận rằng Toán học 12 năm trên ghế nhà trường quan trọng, hãy nhẹ nhàng giải thích là: Toán sơ cấp là để tái hiện lại một lịch sử hào hùng của con người, khám phá ra một ngôn ngữ của riêng mình để giải thích và kết nối với tự nhiên (Ok, mình chém thôi nhưng đại ý cũng là như thế :v).

He leído algunos repetidos sobre teoremas sencillos. Como el Fibonacci, es todo un clásico y también el triángulo de Pascal, y eso que había descubierto un poco de ello.
Lo más interesante es que, nunca antes en mi vida he sabido númerosos personajes que contribuían desde hacía muchísimos años desde la cultura musulmana hasta indios y chinos; de vez en cuando de mi país México sobre los mayas. Ce livre vulgarisateur est un bonheur de lecture, tout y est simple. En remontant l'Histoire, l'auteur relate les découvertes de la géométrie, de pi et du calcul de ses décimales, du formalisme des démonstrations et du langage, des nombres imaginaires, des suites, de l'infini, des probabilités et bien d'autres. Et derrière toutes ces découvertes se trouvent des grands hommes.

How to capture the history of mathematics in a short book? Well, by mixing the history with some of his personal anecdotes, Mickaël Launay charges as a high speed train from Aristotles to the present day. Is it an art of science? Art is attempting to describe beauty, while sometimes discovering the truth. Mathematics attempts to describe the truth, while sometimes discovering beauty. Mickaël Launa certainly succeeds in transferring his love for mathematics in this book.
Je n'étais pas très motivé pour commencer ce livre mais comme il traînait depuis quelques mois sur mon étagère, j'ai décidé de lui donner une chance.
Et bien, je ne regrette pas du tout. C'est un livre très intéressant qui retrace l'histoire des mathématiques. C'est relativement court, donc l'auteur a clairement fait d'imortantes impasses historiques. Les moments choisis sont néanmoins pertinents.
J'ai aussi apprécié son style, classique au sens littéraire du terme sans être pompeux.

Ik vind het altijd wonderlijk om een boek over wiskunde te lezen. De moeilijkheid voor mij is "het" boek te vinden dat niet te erg generaliseert.... maar toch niet zo ver gaat dat ik er niets meer van begrijp.
Dit maakt dit boek plezierig om te lezen. Het blijft , soms weliswaar met wat extra inspanning van mijn brein, verstaanbaar. Soms mocht het voor mij wat dieper ingaan op de wiskundige theorieën.

Words are not enough to describe how good is this book!!! I felt a lot of passion and enthusiasm from the writer in addition to the given examples...I really lived such a great trip with this book. I recommend it for everyone who likes Maths and physics ...and if I Write a book one day I hope It will be so passionate like this one
Interesting narrative history of the development of mathematics from the earliest civilizations to present day. The author knits the research together well, tying it to many artifacts currently on display in museums around the world.

É um grande livro, com ótima fundamentação histórica e fluidez narrativa. Trás conceitos fundamentais de forma clara e acessível. O autor se revela um excelente guia à matemática.

A compact review of the history and development of mathematics with applications. Sometimes very basic, and mainly aimed at the mathematically uninitiated. Nevertheless quite inspiring.
Może i nie było to coś bardzo odkrywczego, ale warto. Taką książką powinno się zaczynać naukę matematyki w szkołach.
