Falcon Mercenary Group, Book 1

One woman’s mission to bring down a sexy elemental shifter turns into a battle of wills…and hearts.

Hostage recovery specialist Eli Chance has a secret. He was born a shifter. A freak of nature.

While on a mission, Eli’s men and their mercenary guide are exposed to a powerful chemical agent, and suddenly his secret has become easier to hide. Now he’s not the only one with the gift. But for his men, this “gift” is becoming more and more of a curse.

Tyana Berezovsky’s brother Damiano was the guide for Eli’s team and was the worst affected by the chemical. As he grows increasingly unstable, Tyana fears she’s going to lose him to the beast he is becoming.

Tyana will do whatever it takes to help him, even if it means using her body to go after the one man she thinks holds all the blame—and possibly the cure. Eli Chance.

"Into the Mist" is an action-packed paranormal erotic suspense that kicks off Maya Banks new series about a group of soldiers who are exposed to a chemical that gives them paranormal powers. For some, it's shifting into animals, another can turn invisible, but for one man it's the answer to a prayer.

Eli has always been 'different'. His ability to turn into mist frightened his parents so much, they put him in social services as a child of ten. He learned to keep his secret until he and his buddies were hit with a chemical that's causing his buddies to exhibit paranormal powers. He can finally stop hiding his talents and pass it off as a result of the chemical. But his buddies can't seem to control their powers and Eli's ability to control his has made him a target...for more than one group.

Tyana's brother was also affected by the chemical. But Eli and his men left him behind and Tyana can't and won't forgive that. When her brother begins suffering due to his lack of control, Tyana decides to hunt down Eli...literally. He WILL tell her what she wants to know...or else.

What a pair. Two physically and psychologically wounded loners who manage to find the perfect match...their alter egos of the other sex! This was the only thing that kind of bugged me. I don't know about the rest of y'all, but I guarantee there's NO WAY I would date a man like me!!

Anyway, the sexual tension is smoking from page one and the action and plot tension just keep rising. Banks' humor comes through in her sharp dialogue and I found myself laughing out loud several times throughout the story. Of course, it's necessary to suspend reality to really like this book, but after all, it's a paranormal. Banks characters come alive for me and I found myself wanting to push, smack, hug, etc each of the different characters at one time or another. Now my biggest problem will be waiting for the next book, which I'm hoping will be about the twins and a missing woman..."Into the Lair" is scheduled for a July 1, 2009 release and I'll be waiting!

This was quite possibly the longest synopsis of a book I've ever read.

I kept waiting for a narrative to happen, but all I got was the most transparent of plots told to me. Add on absurd names (thuggish guy with a heart of gold named Mad Dog? Check.), unerotic sex, only mentioning the race of the token "African-American" comic relief (I guess peach is the assumed default for the rest of them), major leaps of logic, and you have Into the Mist.

Here's a great example of her bland story telling:

They were interrupted when Gabe ambled in, barefoot as usual, and wearing a dingy T-shirt with a smartass saying on it and tattered jeans.

I guess we'll just take her word for it. God forbid she actually say what's on the shirt, that might actually result in character development by cluing us in to his personality and sense of humor, and she so obviously had this guy set up to be a fall guy who dies a heroic death.

I keep ending up with free copies of her books and read them hoping I'll discover why she's so popular. I need to stop. Her books are just plain bad.

4 stars – Paranormal Romance/Erotica

Into the Mist is the first in an erotic paranormal series by Maya Banks that focuses on a group of mercenaries who were exposed to a chemical agent during a hostage recovery mission that altered their DNA and turned them into shifters.

For some members of the unit it’s a curse since they can’t control their shifts, but for Eli Chance, who’s harbored a life long secret ability of elemental shifting (he can turn himself into fog, smoke, or mist at will), it’s a blessing in disguise because now he no longer has to hide his paranormal powers and can blame the chemical that impacted his merc buddies.

Tyana’s brother Damiano was leading the mission and suffered the worst from the effects of the chemical and is becoming more unstable with each passing day. Tyana is determined to save D using any means necessary, whether it’s her position with the Falcon Mercenary Group or by seducing Eli to find out how he can control his powers and the others can’t. Of course, there’s a villain who wants to capture Eli and his men and use them in his quest for power and playing God.

Tyana and Eli are quite the pair. They are both cynical, hard-edged, tough loner types with scarred pasts and lots of emotional baggage, but they find a kinship with each other and share dynamic chemistry and explosive sexual attraction.

Eli is a super hot hero, and his adoration of Tyana only makes him sexier. Tyana got on my nerves, but her back story explains her prickly demeanor and makes you more sympathetic towards her. There are several interesting secondary characters that benefit the story. (I loved Mad Dog!)

With an exciting plot, intriguing characters, funny dialogue, witty banter, smokin’ hot sex (erotic light), lots of action and ass kicking with knives, guns, and hand-to-hand combat, and Banks's great writing, it’s a nice first book in a cool PNR erotica series. 4 stars!

I couldn't finish this one. I can't figure this author out. Some of the books by her I've really enjoyed (like the Sweet series), but several others have been hard to suffer through. With this one, I decided why bother?

The heroine is TSTL. For instance when Eli just shows up in her room in Paris, wouldn't that be a sign that he put a tracker on her. Or at the least that she should ask some strong questions? For a TSTL heroine it obviously means time for monkey sex. None of her choices made sense in this way. She questions every common sense choice her leader makes, but I'm supposed to believe she's a tough cunning mercenary? I guess if being strong is synonomous with being stupid then she was really strong.

There was no chemistry between Eli and Tyana and no reason to care what happened to any of them, and therefore, no reason to read on.

There are too many good books in the world to spend another minute on one that isn't even mediocre.

Stats:
Who cares, the story is crap

What a ridiculous book, not sure how it such a high rating. This felt more like a second book than a first in a series, there was a lot left out and it just dumps you partway into a situation already happening. I could not suspend my imagination for this no matter how hard I tried. So many stupid characters that if they had done anything smart or with common sense (which really is dead) this would be a short story. Way too many plot holes. Mostly sex scenes with very little plot.

So the story starts with Eli our "hero" (I use this term with a huge helping of sarcasm) hitting on a perfect woman (seriously not a single flaw, it's like someone's fantasy not a real person) and one breath away from being a rapist (seriously that is his through/action process, I almost expected him to abduct the woman and force himself on her). They do have sex after she tries to drug him and him being so cautious he somehow manages to put a tracking device inside her vagina as he fucks her...(really? How and where did it come from when you're naked in bed fucking?) Then he shifts into mist, yes mist and watches her snoop around his apartment before getting into a fight with her and she flees.

Turns out she, Tyana aka Ty (who is to stupid to live), is part of a super-secret mercenary group with their own island...Others in the group are her brother (possibly not blood related) everyone calls D (who is having some kind of medical problem which is why she goes to Eli) and a guy called Mad Dog...(ugh please) and leader Jonah who with Mad Dog raised her from the age of 12 (not explained why) who are also her "brothers". And she is in love with Eli after one fuck...again really...(why is this a trope that is so popular a woman instantly in love with a man they just met and fucked?) to the point of having a minor breakdown and getting high to forget about it. Everyone is fighting about/with Ty over her freakout over Eli fucking her. Turns out D is also a shifter but can't control himself. They are all angry that she and Eli had sex and she is freaking out because she regards sex as horrible, dirty, and bad....so why the fuck did she have sex with Eli???? Not explained, she just did even though she hates sex and it goes against everything she believes in. But hey at least the sex was the best ever. Now she is a weak limp noodle of a female who will need to be patronized "protected"

Eli is some kind of mercenary with a team of his own. At some point, they were all "gassed" (no details yet on when, how, why. what for) and became shifters (is this a known thing in this universe? How do they know and accept so casually otherwise and know what to call themselves but that isn't explained yet if it ever will be). Eli's team was with D when all this "gassing" went down and they left D for dead. They assume that all the others are shifters but they only know about Eli for sure. (If they know why not just go up to him and ask for help? D was involved with them and they all went through the same shit. Instead of hunkering down on their own island and worrying about D going to pieces take him to the guy who is fine after going through the same shit!!! But I guess if they did that this would be a very short story). So they plan to go after him and kill him trying to get answers for D (because why???)

Of course since she "failed" in her mission Ty has to go back at any cost to get what she needs from Eli no matter what and damn any personal ethics, morals or personal hang-ups in the way. Also, this will mean doing what everyone tells her not to for safety reasons. She just has to make stupid dangerous choices to prove she isn't a stupid let down (which she is by doing just this) and will fling herself back into Eli's arms. Eli's team must have high connections and lots of money to be stable aka just fine shifters and yet her own team with their own fucking island doesn't have connections or money for help? And yet again why if they worked together in the past and Eli hired D could they not just go see him and ask for help??? She has to balk at everything smart her "brother"/leader says but wants to rush headlong forward with stupidity.

A new client wants Ty's group to capture Eli for mysterious purposes and kill his teammates. She wants to do it but they turn it down and to get her mind off it Mad Dog takes her to Paris.

Eli has tracked her there with his super small GPS in her vagina (seriously how small is this thing that she can't feel it/pass it and what kind of money does this cost to just randomly have at hand a tiny GPS to do this with and how is it still working in there...oh and how future like is this technology that it can show where she is from such a distance). As mist he sticks to her like glue (in her hair!) to follow her for answers (why she can't tell he's there on her when she could tell he was behind her and not touching her as mist in his room from before is a mystery). He thinks of her very condescendingly. Of course, he keeps getting distracted because he wants to fuck her some more. So he assaults her in her sleep in his mist form (how she doesn't wake up is again a mystery...after all she has slept in the same bed as her brother to help stop him from shifting...) Finally, she wakes up and talks to herself about what a great fuck Eli was then calls him out. He shows himself and of course instead of talking they just have to fuck again because sex is just so good...All he can think about is how he is a god to all women who are objects just for sex and she having had sex once is now a bitch in heat who can think of nothing else even when she is supposed to be capturing him to help her brother who doesn't exist when she just has to have sex with Eli...

Ty never gets her answers and then the client her group turned down calls and offers her help for her going against her leaders/brothers wishes and helping him. Of course, she does the stupid thing and agrees. Now that she's just been sexed up she is back to wanting answers.

Eli now knows who Ty is and gets his team onto her group. (Dear god why is not talking to people you need answers from and have had a working relationship in the past the best thing these characters can think to do? I want to shake these people for their blatant stupidity. How do these people do their jobs or are still alive with the choices they make/don't make?) Oh and apparently Eli has been a shifter all his life and now his teammates are too. All because of a botched mission where they were gassed by an unknown chemical. However unlike Eli his partners are different. Two are big cats and one, Gabe becomes invisible. (We still have no idea what D turns into only that he shifts and is 'unstable'). Gabe is 'stable' while it sounds like the other two aren't. (And Eli's GPS in Ty's vagina still works and is in place after more than a week and them having sex again...seriously!)

D and Jonah fight about Ty being an idiot for going after Eli because she is just a stupid weak girl (which she is) who can't do anything complicated by herself. Meanwhile, Ty has her meeting with her new client Estaphan. He tells her he created the chemical that changed D into a shifter. He wants Eli and two of his teammates. If she does his dirty work he'll give her a cure for D. If she doesn't do this he'll kill her and D. (Why she doesn't think he won't do this anyway is a mystery...and why if he can find her and her team he can't find Eli's is also a mystery.) When she gets back to her room Mad Dog confronts her. She won't tell him about Estaphan but she tells him about Eli. Mad Dog exposes how stupid she is and how she put them all in danger and helps her find the tracking device (which is in her hair but earlier in the book it states he slipped it in her while he was putting other things in her...) She gets mad when he tells her to stay away from Eli and that he and Jonah will take care of him. Then she laments how she has to take her punishment for acting like a toddler and idiot like the big girl she is.

Eli goes back to his teammates and laments that after the gassing accident the team is now on the outs from all their government contacts and job...(If I were a government and some of my soldiers could suddenly transform I'd want to train and contain that skill not kick it out and pretend it doesn't exist). He can't figure out what Ty wants with him because they can't talk to each other at all. Eli waits back at his team's base for Ty who he knows will follow him.

Jonah of course closes the island down when Ty and Mad Dog get back. He berates Ty for being an idiot and she sulks like a toddler who is trying to avoid nap time. Even D tells her off and she keeps up the stupid plan to get into trouble doing something she knows she can't. Jonah and Mad Dog plan to after Eli themselves (and they keep talking about how they are going to tie Ty up in her room so she can't leave the island, they have discussed this numerous times already and I'm at the point of shouting at them to just do it already). D has a bad moment and Ty becomes an idiot trying to calm him down when he injures her and when her 'brothers' step in she wants them to stay away when they are there to help. (Seriously Ty is TSTL) She objects to them confining him to his room for everyone's safety and she objects because he wouldn't hurt his family (even though he just hit her). She makes excuses that he isn't in control and it defeats the point she's trying to make but is too stupid to see. So her resort is to get drunk and high. Jonah confronts her again about how stupid she has been but she doesn't care and goes about her plan to put herself and her team in danger again. (I would kick her off the team by now). She gets another minor team member to help her even though they all know she's an idiot who should be kept on the island. She knows she has messed up and shouldn't get herself in deeper but she keeps on with her plan to get put everyone in more danger. She keeps acting like a cranky toddler. D's doctor arrives and tells them that D can learn to control himself through his thoughts and emotions. Ty is all for science being able to cure him and the doctors' solution is bull shit. Ty sneaks off the island to find Eli again. (I hoped she'd drown at this point so the book would end). Her helper tells her how stupid she's being but helps her anyway even though he'll get in trouble...with a mercenary group... (by the way his nickname is tits because he like big boobs and not smart women and she says she'd have to dumb herself down to be at his level...she who must have a very low IQ from all her actions and thought process). She meets with Estephan after expertly killing a man and injuring another in the street getting beaten and injured herself, but she looks fine so all is fine.

Jonah and Mad Dog find out Ty is gone and D is resigned to Ty being an idiot and putting herself in danger. D knows that there is no cure and he must figure things out for himself. They are all going to go after her and kill Eli because she won't stop going after him. Jonah confronts Tits about helping her and tells him about her stupid mistakes and Tits gives her up. He finds out Estaphan is involved.

Ty gets to Eli's team's base. Eli can't wait to fuck her again so he goes looking for her. She discovers Eli's teammates can shift. She tells him about Estaphan wanting him and that D is alive. She finally tells him why she wants him. She now understands that they are all unstable except Eli and that he can't help D. She tells Eli that Estaphan is behind the gas attack which he didn't know. Eli tells her Gabe is also stable and she assaults and wounds him when he shows up (which is stupid if you plan on asking him for help). She then insults them and expects them for help and Eli wants to fuck her so he ignores his team member that she is trouble and stupid. Of course they have sex again because they just can't keep their hands off each other. When it's over she's upset she didn't talk because all she wanted was sex.

They finally all talk and she tells them D can become anything when he shifts. She tells the rest of the team about Estaphan and that he wants Eli and knows where they are and about his being the one to change them. They all evacuate the base to avoid Estaphan and Ty's team. Ty and Eli talk more about what to do about Estaphan, why they aren't good with the government anymore. They plan to go after Estaphan and use Tits to help. She contradicts her own behavior and actions when she proposes they team up. The conversation of course turns to sex. She finally starts to think about what an idiot she has been and how much danger she has put people in. They talk again and come up with theories about what happened to them and why. They talk about their pasts and how they got to where they are now.

When they get to the city they need to fly out of she does more stupid stuff when she has a PTSD flashback. She is upset about losing a knife from the fight she just had. She has a breakdown. (She would have had a flashback before in other situations so how she is on a mercenary team is confusing). She tells Eli about her past as an orphan and how she met D. Jonah and Mad Dog take them in and turn them into soldiers. They make plans to kidnap Estphan and torture him for answers. Eli then confesses that he has always been able to shift. Of course, they must have sex now that she is devastated that he can't help D. Then it's time for Eli to tell Ty about his past, more sex then it's go time to get Estphan. Off to Germany, a hotbed of terrorists. When they get there Estphan is waiting and gets Eli and his team. Ty's team is there and they take her away. Ty is upset Eli would think she betrayed him.

Ty's team takes her back to Paris. Ty is upset with her team who only wants to save her and she acts like an idiot and a toddler who throws a tantrum. Ty quits to go back for Eli and she confesses her "love" and "need" for him. She's going to give up her family and job for him. Then her team does a 180 and will do whatever she wants because she threw a big tantrum. (I'd let her go and get killed myself).

So off they go to save Eli and his team. They break into a multimillion-dollar facility that would be guarded up the wazzoo but three people (one a colossal fuck up) can get in and know exactly where to go and get their targets. Of course, Ty is perfect now like Rambo taking down everything in her path and ignoring proper and logical instructions being the giant fuckup again...(someone shoot her!) The rest of the team is shifted and she lets them out and they find Eli and Ty's team of course Eli and his team must go back for her now that she's caught. So now everyone is in danger for the fuckup who they have to go get. They run into Estphan and Gade gets shot and confesses he betrayed them to save his sister. They rescue Ty and they agree Ty is a fuckup and her team and Eli's join up.

I actually really loved this book. I was not expecting to like it as much as I did. I love the relationships between the characters and the heroine was absolutely amazing. Personally the amount of smut was so unnecessary and I literally skipped through it but the book was still fun to read. Not the shifter romance I was expecting but it was entertaining nonetheless.

I like reading Maya Banks. Eli Chance has a big secret he was born a shifter. While on a mission to Ahdarji, a recovery unit, along with their mercenary guide, are exposed to a chemical agent which leaves them all with the ability to shapeshift. Only the shifting is uncontrollable and unpredictable and the answers to the situation seem to lie with the one man who seems to have conquered his shifting Eli. Tyana Berezovsky is determined to do whatever she has to in order to find a cure for her brother Damiano's shifting instability. The drugs they'd been using to keep him in human form aren't as effective as they used to be and Ty fears for him. As a member of the elite group of mercenaries called the Falcons she uses her knowledge to attempt to gain information from Eli by seducing him. Eli's very aware there's something different about Ty from the minute he first sees her in a seedy bar. He's blissfully unaware that her interest in him is more than purely sexual until he notices her slip a little something extra into his drink. Ty's mission to get info regarding how Eli's able to control his shifting proves to be more difficult than originally thought since he's not going along with the plan to incapacitate him. She hadn't planned on actually having sex with him but she certainly isn't complaining about the detour in her plans either. Her mission's blown when she can't find the information she needs and Eli busts her searching his place. She still manages to escape and return to her `family' but her concern over D's deteriorating condition will have her going against Jonah and Mad Dog's demands that she give up her quest. These aren't your ordinary shape shifters and I was stunned by how sexy I found Eli's ability to shift into mist. There's no denying Ty and Eli are both deadly as well as emotionally vulnerable and the combination deadly. I loved the smart mouth comments and attitude that are present throughout the entire book. Their verbal sparing keep you smiling despite the seriousness of the situation. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling like all of Ms. Banks books I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series.

Okay, let me get this clear. This book doesn't work for me. I think for some time, romance books just don't cut out for me anymore. Maybe all the grossly exagerrated physical beauty of the characters, or the even more exagerrated greatness of the sex. Or simply there are no story to tell and i just hit the wall with this genre.

But because paranormal romance used to be my favorite genre i still give it another chance, and another and another. I just don't know when to stop though everytime i want to scream or throw-up or screaming while throwing up (I don't know whether it is physically possible).

So it is the mercanary world, where Maya Banks want to creat kick-ass heroine while what comes out is snivelling, pain in the ass, good for nothing Tyana. She supposed to be good and strong but she keeps getting in the way and she doesn't do her job well obviously because she botch every job that has been given to her and she doesn't have enough decency to know her limitation.

While her lust at first sight is Eli Chance, a shifter.
Twice the meet, twice they hit the sack. The third time, still hitting the sack as the forth, fift and so on (you get the gist).

Suddenly there's love blooming from multiple orgasm and heart to heart conversation because obviously you can trust a person that you have great sex with. Right???

As said before: meh... I was expecting more from Ms. Banks. The story should have been more consistent. Everyone seemed to run around without any plan or thought. They should have been highly trained, but they acted as green as they come! They did things that had no sense whatever. I'd come out and say that the only and best thing were the sex scenes... and that's the reason for 3 stars, otherwise it would have been 1 and 1/2. Sorry...

4 stars average, really?

Reading the author bio in the back it appears she is native born American - which means she has no excuse for miss use of or misspoken (American) idioms. She made my eye start to twitch, it was bad & happened more than once.

The saddest part of the book is that it could've been good. But instead it just went the Mary Sue fanfic TSTL route.

I liked this book, I really did, but the whole time I felt like I was missing something. Like this should’ve been the second book in the series instead of the first.
I am intrigued so I’ll be reading the second book

Well written, steamy romance. For me though, there were way too many characters and I kept losing track. I think this book was supposed to set up a series (hence the plethora of hunky mercenaries), but so far to date there's been only one other book. 3.5 stars.

I like the book and characters, as well as the spin on shapeshifters used in it. I've read both this one and the sequel before and still wish this series were a lot longer so we could explore more of this world. A couple of logic failings glared out at me from the book, however. Tyana's ability to sense Eli's presence is inconsistent (not to mention unexplained how she does it). If a book makes me stagger with the logic-crashes-into-wall and I have to figure out what went wrong, this isn't exactly a good thing. The book is still quite good, despite the logic crash, but this series screams and shrieks for a whole lot more sequels. I'd really like a prequel of sorts to set this one and the whole of the series up better. As it stands, we have only what the characters reveal in dialogue and narration. And a whole bunch of unanswered questions.

Tyana is a kick ass female I admire. She is determined to find a way to save her brother of her soul. She demonstrates loyalty and perseverance. Eli is the answer to her problems. Little does she know, Eli has secrets that negate her assumed solution.

This was a fun read. Ms. Banks is always a joy to read for me. This was fast and smexy. Eli is a guy I enjoyed and wouldn't mind submitting to. This story wasn't very complex and there were no surprises. An enjoyable afternoon read. Recommend for happily ever after lovers who like strong lead characters.

3.5-4 stars and here's why:

3.5 bc it needed more depth but what can you say when it comes to erotic PNR. That being said, it's hot, sexy and packed with action. These alpha males are worth exploring!

4 bc it got me turning the pages and can't wait for the next book. The storyline has potential due to the emotion shared by these characters, touched & tears lingering ...and that in my book, worth the 4 stars.

Moving on to search for Katie...

I liked the premise to this one. What happened to the guys in the past, the 2 different factions, but overall the story seemed a little stiff and one dimensional to me. But I will be checking out the next one.

At the beginning I was wondering if I had skipped the first book, but no, it IS the first book. But there isn't much explanation about who, why, and how, you just jump into the story and try to understand what's happening. That's frustrating.

It's good, even if the basic plot's very typical of Maya Banks, I find the twist's awesome. Can't wait to purchase the sequel.

Anyone who has read my reviews very often will have come across at least one in which I've said that I used to think I hated the romance genre and refused to read it. Then, one day, I Realized that it wasn't actually romance I hated but the gender representations common in romance books. I've learned that if I'm selective, I can quite enjoy romance.

Into the Mist is not one of those books. It is full of all the gendered BS that I hate and avoided for so very long. Tyana is supposed to be strong and talented and skilled, but she's a walking disaster of TSTL. Her primary character development is being a rape victim as a child. And sadly, that's more than anyone else in the novel gets.

The paranormal aspects of the book are so sketchy and poorly thought out that I finally just decided that they're there as window dressing to world the characters live in. And that world is so ill-defined that I didn't even know if shifters were out or not. So, basically the world existed simply to give the characters different places to have sex. And the sex wasn't even that hot.

All in all, as my first Banks book, I was disappointed. Additionally, the narrator did a fine job. However, I hated the fragile, breathy way she played Tyana. It only exacerbated my frustration with the book.

[This is a review upon my second read of the book (date listed).]

I remember Maya Banks being a great author, but, after as string of disappointing reads, Into the Mist was just as mind-blowing as I had hoped it would be.

The familiar chemistry between Eli and Tyana was fantastic. She's a complete bad-ass in fights and in bed, but scared to give up her heart. He's sexy and smart, but with secrets in his past that haunt him. They make the perfect couple, with romance written just as brilliantly.

In the same way, I love the Falcon family. They're hard to the outside world and all tenderness with each other. It's obvious, in every interaction, how much they mean to each other and the depths of their love that is as cautiously extended as trust.

Wow. I loved this book so much that I hardly have anything to say about it! My only disappointment with the series is that it's a duology. I'd love to see more of these characters—although I don't know if my heart can take the heat. Thank you, Maya Banks, for crafting an amazing read.

I typically write my reviews in real time as I experience the story. Currently, I'm listening to the audiobook version narrated by Nia Partington.

While I normally love Maya Banks' books, I am having a really hard time getting into this one, so I took a long break from it and finished the last hour and a half months after I put it down. I enjoyed the last quarter of the book, and it reminded me of Banks' KGI series. The rescue mission at the end had a good amount of action.

I'm glad that Brayden and Ian's cat forms had enough sentience to help Tyana as she was trying to help them. It broke my heart that Gabe was the traitor, even though I understand him wanting to protect his sister. This book left off without Esteban being captured, without a cure for Damiano, and before they went to rescue his sister, Katie, so I'm guessing that is where the next book will leave off. I'm also glad that the two teams merged, because their needless angst towards each other was part of the reason why the first part of the book was so difficult for me to get into.

I'm not sure if I will continue on with this series or not. I may give it some time, re-experience this story, update this review and go from there.

I often find myself not enjoying female narrators because of how difficult male voices are for them, but Nia Partington did a decent job.

#1 in the Falcon Mercenary Group romance series

This was not quite what I expected, mainly because the shapeshifter in the story changed into mist rather than an animal. I don't know why it never occurred to me that you could shift into anything, really, but it hadn't, and this was an interesting twist. Eli and Tyana are basically from rival military teams, although one of Falcon's members had worked with Eli's group before. That's actually when the problem started, and some of them were made into shapeshifters without their consent or control. Tyana is determined to discover Eli's secret about why he is able to control his shift, so she can transfer this knowledge to her brother, who will otherwise face a much shorter and unhappier lifespan. There was quite a bit of romance between them, as well as pretty brutal action. I liked Tyana and Eli--both were strong and sensible, with great passion. I liked this book well enough to continue with the other in this two-book "series."

This book follows Tyana Berezovsky, member of the highly trained Falcon Mercenary Group. She goes to get intel from a man, Eli Chance, and instead is shocked to receive the best sex of her life.

However, it's not a one-off thing; Tyana didn't get the info she wanted, and Eli is intrigued with this woman who clearly sought him out, wanted something from him, and gave him a rock-rolling good time. But Eli is not just a regular man: he is a shifter. He has the ability to shift into mist or smoke, and it is this very ability that Tyana wants to know about. But why? And how will it end up uniting them in a common purpose?

This book was all right. I've never read of mist shifting, so that was cool, but I didn't like Eli at all. Furthermore, the book moved really quickly, too quickly for my taste, and I don't feel like Eli and Tyana's romance really clicked. I liked the close relationships both of them had with their effective coworkers, and how it emphasized loyalty, but I think that may be about it.

The book description really plays heavily on Eli's perspective, but despite the opening scene being from Eli's POV, the actual content is primarily from Tyana's: It's HER story of trying to find a solution to her brother's condition, it's HER doing whatever it takes - including sleeping with "the enemy". Eli is more or less along for the ride for most of the book.

Now, it's been a long while since I've read any serious smut, and this book definitely delivered that aspect. I wasn't expecting to fall in love with the characters, so no surprises there, but there were some cute moments. There are even some attempts at body positivity, though that's kind of canceled out by the "little woman" attitude of the male MC. I will probably read the second one because I want to see if there is a way to cure or develop the affliction the brothers - both Tyana's and secondary characters Ian and Braden - are suffering from.

The cover for this book is the biggest misdirect i've ever seen

Someone please tell why the hell there's a panther on the cover when Eli, who is the love interest, is an elemental shifter? Like he can shift into mist and smoke? I sat in shock reading that first chapter where he shifts into mist for the first time... i fully expected him to be some kind of kitty cat shifter since there's a panther on the cover. But no, that ability went to two of his friends. So technically there is kitty cat shifters in the book, it's just not one of the main characters and therefore the panther on the cover is just misleading and stupid. I rest my case.

But as my friend said when i told her that Eli could shift into mist and smoke - "Well that's unique"

When a mission turns deadly things are not what these men on a mission did not count on. They were bombarded with chemicals that turned them into beings no longer human with powers that they have no control of. Two set of teams must come together to get the missing information to survive. Only thing is one man was not exactly human to begin with. Eli Chance has a secret. He was born a shifter. A freak of nature. He is an elemental. Two others turned to cats. They are out for answers. They thought they had lost a man. But his sister is out for revenge on them for leaving him behind. She also wants answers. He wants her. Can the two teams work together and find out what is going on?
