The Magic of Meditation: Stories and Practices to Develop Gratitude and Empathy with Your Child

Rate this book
A simple but complete mindfulness meditation program for children as young as three years old and their parents, designed to encourage kindness and empathy.

More and more children are experiencing the benefits of mindfulness practices at home and in school to reduce stress, regulate emotions, and improve concentration. But true mindfulness practice also opens the heart and increases compassion and empathy. This is really two books in one: a guide for parents to the basics and benefits of meditation for children, and a concise practice program of mindfulness meditation for children, ages three to seven. The program includes stories, bedtime rituals, and an audio download, featuring Yupsi, a magical dragon. Yupsi’s boundless optimism and good nature will inspire children to feel confidence in their emotions and help them develop natural kindness and altruism.

Meditation means to take care of, cultivate and familiarize oneself with.

Some benefits of a more spacious mind are that you can become more creative, patient, confident, productive, tolerant, relaxed, and balanced.

Some health benefits of meditation are cardiovascular protection, pain management, immune system protection, weight management, and protection against cellular aging.

When your mind wanders, just come back to your breath, like a butterfly coming back to a flower after having fluttered around here and there for no apparent reason.

Let thoughts pass through the field of your awareness the way a bird passes through the sky without leaving a trace.

I also received this book as an advanced reader's copy and meditation is something that we ALL take for granted especially children who are not familiar with the practice and its benefits. Cunin and Butet do a great job examining the benefits and I loved the character they created to help children understand the concept of meditation. I am curious to try some of these techniques with my niece and nephew and I know our patrons will be highly interested in this book as well. Excellent Work! 5 stars!

I was disappointment by this book. I was hoping for a practical and accessible guide to help my children learn to meditate. The first half of the book was too scholarly with a long history of meditation and studies showing its benefits. And while the second half of the book did contain some practical meditations to do with your children, most of it was about a blue cartoon dragon named Yupsi who was supposed to be a guide for your children, but I found to be strange.

I received an ARC from NetGalley. This book will be released on July 3, 2018.

I thought the ideas on meditation were interesting. My seven year old son wants nothing to do with overt meditation or mindfulness, but he absolutely loves to listen to the stories featuring Yupsi the magical dragon.
