Ermine is a headstrong orphan girl, opinionated, flighty, and too outspoken to get along with her sister's new husband, so when the offer is made to live with an elderly female relative, all involved feel this an ideal answer to a problem.

A year or so later, the relative passes away and it is revealed that Ermine has not lived there in over a year but instead has gone abroad where she experiences many adventures through the school of hard knocks.
