I was thoroughly excited about getting to read this book, and had very high hopes for what knowledge it must have contained inside…. I wasn’t exactly let down of course, but it didn’t reach the top of the pedestal I put it on in my mind.

It has SO many facts, as expected, of the DC comics universe, pertaining only to the comics. Which I was rather fond of it not mentioning movies or shows as they were based on the comics anyway and probably aren’t entirely accurate to the comics. However, I wouldn’t know as I’ve never read the comics. But the facts themselves were written nicely and summarized to fit a bunch of stuff inside this book. But only the way the facts were written.

As other reviews say, it is very hard to read and isn’t comprehensive at all. The facts are in their own comical bubble that’s possibly related to what’s on the page (but it is related to the section, just each page possibly has tons of different things and facts at once). Even though it was hard to remember most of what I read, whatever spoke to me as cool, I shared with my friends and family and those facts remain embedded in my mind for now. Most of the other things remain glossy, or entirely forgotten.

But, to build on that point, I recently watched Black Adam, and it really put some of my mind to work, and I did remember quite a bit, or recognized some characters even if they were one of the characters mentioned in one tiny bubble, and I have an awful memory, so it can’t be all that bad. Plus the index is extremely useful if you’re wanting to look for certain characters, or places, or things.

So it has its cons, yes. But I still thoroughly enjoyed this, and learning more about this universe made me feel giddy and like a happy ol’ nerd nerding out. So that is why I rated it 4 stars. If it was written slightly better and slightly more organized I would have given 5 stars. I hope to purchase the Marvel comics universe absolutely everything you need to know, even if it’s written the same (which I heavily assume it will be). If you decided to truly read this entire review, I am so sorry. And also kudos to you as well. Enjoy reading, or not reading this book :)

Deshalb 3 Sterne

As a comics fan I really can't recommend this to anyone trying to get into superheroes. The book glosses over several famous characters and storylines and instead heavily focuses on some pretty old and obscure issues that haven't been relevant for over 40 years (like one where Lois Lane got turned into a centaur). As a result it reads like a collection of BuzzFeed articles and doesn't give any information about important stories or good introductions for new readers.

Not the most comprehensive but it’s got some surprisingly good, interesting, fun and obscure facts. The art is gorgeous and vibrant and the book doesn’t just focus on the big names like Batman, Superman, etc... It’s great seeing some lesser known heroes and villains and the whole thing makes for a good book for any Geek collection.

What a random read for me! I don't even know how to review this. It's really colorful and I think it gives a good introduction to the DC Comics world(s).

This is a great resource for DC fans. Though by no means comprehensive, it is well geared toward it's audience of juvenile readers. There are quotes, facts, great images, relationships status and loads of information.

The book is divided into general sections such as Superheroes, Supervillains, Groups, Science & Magic and others. Each chapter delves fairly deeply into it's chosen subject, though, as I said, by no means comprehensive, and there is a distinct lack of female characters that are discussed in depth.

One thing I did enjoy was it talked a lot about the alternate versions of characters and timelines. How each character changed, or was shaped, by the alternate place they lived.

The art was incredible, both images from older comics and newer material. There was no reference to any of the films or TV shows in this book, this was strictly the comics.

Any DC, or comics fan would enjoy browsing this book.
