Life Along The Hudson: The Historic Country Estates of the Livingston Family
This gorgeous oversized tome features thirty-six sublime country homes, many overlooking the Hudson River.
This scenic stretch of estates along the Hudson offers some of the finest examples of American architecture and landscape design. The edition's thirty-five featured homes were designed in a range of styles by notable architects Stanford White, A. J. Davis, Calvert Vaux, Warren and Wetmore, and more. All pair exquisite interiors with expansive lush lawns and riverfront views. Formerly country homes for eighteenth-century landed gentry and nineteenth-century industrialists--Astors, Chanlers, Chapmans, Delanos, Roosevelts--they include Dutch colonial cottages and grand Gothic Revival, Federal, Georgian, and Beaux-Arts residences. Constructed on land owned by the influential Livingston family, who settled in the area in the late seventeenth century, many have been restored to their former splendor by the original owners' descendants as well as recent leaders of New York City industry and the arts, including Richard Jenrette and Brice Marden.

There are no words for how beautiful the photos in this book are!
And then after you get done admiring the photos, and you sit down to read the narrative, the history of the Livingstons is all there in writing too. The stories are as great as the photos.
For those living in the Hudson Valley and/or those interested it's history and/or the history of the Livingston family here, this is not only a beautiful book but an invaluable one.
The only things on my wish list for this book are a genealogical tree of the Livingston family, so I could keep the people straight from house to house as I read, and a map of the county with the houses located on it. Though I can understand for the people now living in the houses why this wasn't done. Actually, it was extremely nice of the private homeowners to allow their homes to be photographed for public consumption.

Loved this book about the houses that the Livingston's built in the Hudson Valley. Beautiful pictures that show the exterior and interior.
The author gave a brief history of the family for each house.

The pictures were magnificent and the history and anecdotes of family and current owners splendid. A wonderful visual feast for anyone looking to take a peek into the many estates along the Hudson which have stood for almost two centuries.
