YA contemporary publisher, staring down his glasses at a sea of editors: so what’s big and new in this genre? what haven’t we done before?

YA contemporary editor, tentatively raising his hand: maybe a book about... a girl with a chronic illness that will make her die, but only under certain circumstances. her life is still really full, but there’s NO LOVE in it, and since love is more important than your actual life, she meets a really hot boy and then she dies because Love is the most important thing? we can make side conflicts out of her high school archnemesis, who someone calls a “whore” in literally the speech they make to her as she’s dying, and maybe her dad’s perfectly reasonable but ultimately paranoid worries for her safety!

Wow. I had no idea what to expect from this book, but it was absolutely brilliant.

It started of as the most beautiful, awkward, cringey, cheesy, adorable love story ever. I was completely in love with the two characters and everything was perfect. But then the ending came along and shattered my heart into tiny pieces and it was so sad and just ASDFGHJkjsdhfsidf I can't deal!!!

Katie is an awesome protagonist. Her character felt so real and honest, the way she overcame obstacles and triedd to fit in despite all the odds that were stacked against her... It was incredible! I also lived the way she expressed herself through her music. It was so great to see the ways she coped with her situation and her character was so perfect I can't even!

And then there's Charlie. Oh my goodness! There was so much more depth to him than I originally expected, his journey from the start of the book to the end was incredible to see. He was so funny, sweet, caring, and also awkward. He and Katie were absolutely perfect together!

Yes, it was cliche. Yes it was cheesy. Yes I loved it. No regrets! I highly recommend to lovers of corny YA romance novels!

So... I reread this book because I borrowed it to my grandma a few days ago and she returned it to me saying “it was one of the most touching books I’ve ever read”. So I needed to reread it to remind myself why this book is so special.
This time, it reminded me of A walk to remember by Nicholas Sparks. The notebook and the disease.
I couldn’t imagine my life without the si sunshine on my skin. Or the heat of the sun surrounding me. It’s unimaginable...
But the story was really beautiful. ❤️

I picked up a copy of Midnight Sun as a deal from UK shopping chain called The Works after hearing that Bella Thorne was going to be starring in the film adaptation of this. This YA Contemporary does have vibes of another novel called Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon, so going into this one was a little... daunting to say the least. The main character Katie is a seventeen year old who can't go outside in direct sunlight due to a condition called XP. Instead, she can only go outside at night once the sun has set. She watches from a window a boy called Charlie who she is attracted to, however, he has no idea of the secrets and struggles surrounding Katie's condition. When they both do start talking to each other, sparks fly and a connection starts to get created.

The majority of the book for me was at least a 2 star read, I struggled with character connection and there were moments that I felt were predictable. HOWEVER, I will not lie about this fact, the last 40 or so pages of Midnight Sun really tugged at my heartstrings. The emotional impact was there, dialogue was strong which gave the story good pacing, fast but also curious to see more about Katie and her everyday life. The ending was abrupt, however, my rating has definitely been bumped up to a 3 star due to the emotional aftershock I felt. This is a quick read for anyone looking for a book to pick up during travels to work or going on holiday. I loved the music plotline, music in YA=Love <3

"A heartbreaking tale of love, loss and one nearly perfect summer - perfect for fans of The Fault In Our Stars and Everything, Everything."

That, that's it. It's just a poor rip-off of Everything, Everything plot, and the Romance from The fault in our stars. I felt like that reading the book, the whole freaking time. This book did one thing different.

Gosh, when i finished the book, i really didn't know how i felt. I hated it until page 180. I really didn't care. But when i did got invested, it all seemed to be over in seconds. The ending is the only good thing about this book, and it's not even that good. I really wished Trish Cook had found a another way for the ending to be like it is. Because the reason why i ended like that, is so stupid. That's the biggest reason why i hate the main-character. Oh no, kidding. I hated Katie the most, because she was a selfish dick to her dad and her best friend. AND THE END? OMG. I hate her. I never felt so sorry for a parent in a book. Holy shit Katie, you won a award.

So, if you like Everything, Everything (which i do not really) and dumb ass romance? This is for you. It is a really easy read, and the writing is not bad at all. But ugh.. I really dislike this book.

I hate this girl. She is so stupid. And what she did at the end, i.. just.. poor dad. F*** her. Really.

Charlie Reed:
The love interest. Well, let me say this.. If he was real, he would have been a awesome dude. But he just feels so unrealistic to me. I really don't care about him. The moment he meets Katie, is just.. a cringey moment. So unreal. Bleh.

Jack Price:
This is Katie's dad. He's such a beautiful person. He's my favorite part of the book, no doubt. And Katie broke his heart. More then once.. And the end? I could cry for him. I just went to my mom to talk about this, how bad of a child Katie was. And my mom haven't even read the book, and also really hated Katie.

Morgan:
The best friend. She's a great friend. Also felt very sorry for her, Katie being so selfish all the time, and Morgan just has to deal with it. And again, the end, Katie just f*** Morgan too. USDHFJSHFJSGHJKE

Zoe Carmichael:
Typical mean girl. So yeah... don't have more to say about this 'Zoe'

So the reason i read it, was because it's been turned into a movie, which you can see on the bigscreen now. I saw the trailer after i read the book, and i does looks like its follows the book. Bella Thorne is in it, and she is great. So i do want to see the movie.

I’ve seen the movie, it’s realllyyyy close to the book. As in alsmost perfectly close. But still, im not the a big fan of the story. Altho, the movie was kinda good. But the romance... ughh.. sooo cheesyyyyy

Horrible, terrible, awful, and all the other synonymous.
Reading this book was a nightmare.
And this time I haven’t seen the movie before or know anything about the plot: this is genuinely garbage!

First of all, even if you think that this story could work out, it seems to be written by a 12 years-old-girl.
The narration is bad, like fanfiction-bad, and the whole thing takes place in only a couple of weeks (which is pretty unrealistic).
And the characters are so annoying: what they say, how they act. It’s all so fake!

The idea of the story is not that bad, it’s the same old story of an illness girl who met someone who changes her life forever and then…. You know, you already heard this story in all possible shades.
But, I repeat, it could have worked with a REAL writer. Someone who actually knows how to write an article or a book, someone who doesn’t put five useless adjectives in every phrase. You don’t even need a degree to do that, you just need to know how your own language works!

I’m impressed and at the same time offended about all the wasted paper to publish it, and I can’t stop thinking about all those people who saw the movie. Deep down, I know it was bad too.

Der Anfang war wirklich süss aber danach steht es irgendwie still. Es passiert nicht viel oder überhaupt etwas. Das Ende hat mich überrascht und berührt, trotzdem war es nur mittelmässig für mich da es einfach zu wenig Handlung für mich gab.

I totally didn't cry during this book. (wink wink)
I liked the romance, it was sweet and cute. What I didn't like, though, was how annoying Katie was. She kept putting off telling Charlie. It was so infuriating! Like, ughh! Why don't you just tell him?! And the entire time, they were just going on dates and stuff. They never did something interesting. I mean, the live shows and stuff were cool, but I felt nothing really happened in the book. I feel like a terrible person for saying that, but it's true. I didn't really like it. Am I the only one who felt like it was a rip off Fault in Our Stars?

I’ll be honest, I watched the movie first so that might have changed my impression of the book but I just found the writing so cringey. It was so over the top in some parts and obviously the insta love plays a role too.
The plot in general is fine but I didn’t like the forced cattiness and dramatics of the “villain” of the story and the whole thing felt rushed.

Wait? Is Midnight Sun not a movie? Yes, it is, but it is based on the book with the same name. But don't worry, up until a couple weeks ago I didn't know either. And as a good and model bookworm, I wanted to read the book before I watched the movie.

Katie is not your everyday eighteen-year old teenager because she can't leave the house during the day. Katie has a rare disease and can't be exposed to the sun because even the smallest amount can be deadly. Then one night she meets Charlie on a deserted train platform, while she was singing and playing her guitar.
Even though their first meeting goes everything but smooth, Katie and Charlie meet again. She even tells him about her disease - well at least she plans too. But before Katie does, she wants to enjoy being a normal teenager for once. But reality catches up faster than expected.

Midnight Sun is super cute and your typical YA novel: first love, summer, high school problems and a dramatic element that will question the young couple's love. This dramatic element is a disease called xeroderma pigmentosum or XP for short. It's a rare genetic disorder of DNA repair and can lead to amongst other things blistering, skin cancer and death by even the tiniest exposure to sunlight. It sounds morbid but it was interesting to read and learn about this kind of disease. However, I wished Trish Cook would have given even more info about the disease.

Even though the story had this dramatic and sad element, I really enjoyed reading it. Katie was very fun, kind, and ambitious but also brave, self-confident, and admirable. I thought it was really great how she dealt with her disease, which was also thanks to her dad and her best friend. I was also really fond of Charlie who was charming, sweet, and loyal. He was the perfect boyfriend for Katie.

"Do everything you can right now and then decide. Because now is all that matters."

Despite the fact that I thought it was a cute story, it was also very short-lived. Trish Cook had this fantastic idea about this girl with XP and a big dream, and then this boy with a past and his own dream, but I think that Trish Cook didn't use this idea to its full potential. The story as it is now left me a little hanging and it scratched only the surface in my opinion. There is so much left to tell about Katie, XP and also Charlie and I wished Cook would have gotten a little deeper.

I'm really excited to see the movie in a couple of weeks, though and I hope that Hollywood stood true to the book and didn't change too many things.

This book was definitely cliche but I still enjoyed it because I’m a sucker for these types of YA books! So if you’re into cliche YA contemporary novels this is one I definitely recommend!

"Midnight Sun" is a tender, bittersweet love story that leans heavily into themes of first love, illness, and the fleeting nature of time. Having watched the movie when it first came out and listening to the book felt like revisiting a familiar story rather than discovering something new.

The story follows Katie, a teenage girl with a rare condition that prevents her from being exposed to sunlight, and Charlie, the boy she falls in love with despite the risks. Their relationship is sweet and sincere, built on quiet moments, music, and stolen time. The writing captures the innocence of young love well, and the emotional weight of knowing their time together is limited hangs over every interaction.

That said, while the ending is undeniably sad, it didn’t hit me as hard in book form. I remember getting emotional when I watched the movie, but this time I felt more emotionally distant, likely because I already knew what was coming. While listening to the audiobook, I could clearly picture scenes from the film, which made the experience feel more like a replay than a fresh emotional journey.

Overall, "Midnight Sun" is a heartfelt and gentle story, even if it didn’t move me as deeply as rhe movie.

Herje, wo fange ich nur an? Dieses Buch ist einfach herzzerreißend schön. Ich kann gar nicht in Worte fassen, was es in mir ausgelöst hat, denn wenn ich daran denke, könnte ich schon wieder weinen. Die Autorin hat es durch ihren lockeren Schreibstil geschafft, dass ich Katie schon nach wenigen Seiten ins Herz geschlossen habe.

Das Buch ist aus Katies Perspektive geschrieben, und da sie redet, wie es ihr in den Sinn kommt, kann man sie nur gern haben. Katie, die seit ihrer Kindheit an XP erkrankt ist und aufgrund ihrer Krankheit nicht ans Sonnenlicht darf. Sie sehnt sich jedoch so sehr danach ein „normaler“ Teenager zu sein. An dem Abend, an dem sie eigentlich ihren Abschluss gemacht hätte, geht sie zum Bahnhof und singt. Was sie nicht ahnt.. an dem Abend soll sich ihr Leben schlagartig ändern. Sie trifft auf Charlie, den sie schon seit ihrer Kindheit anhimmelt, der sie jedoch weder kennt, geschweige denn etwas von ihrer Krankheit weiß.

Katie ist nicht nur lustig und liebenswert, nein, sie ist auch so stark. Ihr Leben lang hat sie schon damit zu kämpfen, nicht raus zu dürfen. Damit zu kämpfen von ihren Vater Privatunterricht zu bekommen und nicht zur Schule zu dürfen, nie auf einen Abschlussball gehen zu können oder das zu tun, was andere Teenager in ihrem Alter machen.

Wo wir gerade bei ihrem Vater sind.. man merkt sofort von wem Katie ihre Stärke hat. Ihr Vater muss aufgrund des frühen Verlustes seiner Frau ganz allein damit klarkommen, dass er früher oder später auch noch seine Tochter verlieren wird, was er sich aber natürlich nicht anmerken lässt.

Dann ist da natürlich noch Charlie, aber über ihn verrate ich lieber nicht zu viel, nur das er ganz wundervoll ist.

Zusammengefasst, zeigt das Buch einem, dass wir die Zeit nutzen sollten die wir haben, dass nichts selbstverständlich ist und das wir alle unser Päckchen zu tragen haben, auch wenn man es nicht auf den ersten Blick sieht.

Eine ganz klare Empfehlung meinerseits! Ich freue mich schon auf den Film, der am 22.03.2018 im Kino anläuft, auch wenn ich weiß, dass mir das Herz erneut rausgerissen wird.

Trish Cook’s Midnight Sun is one of those books aimed at fans of The Fault in Our Stars, cashing in on teenagers’ obsession with the morbidly heart-breaking. I’m not saying this is a bad thing, nor am I trying to sound judgemental, I’m merely pointing out how this book is aimed at a very specific crowd.

With such a limited blurb, I wasn’t entirely sure what I was going into with this one. It sounded interesting, yet beyond being able to say it was a contemporary young adult romance, I wasn’t at all sure what I was getting into. In all honesty, I had a bit of a debate as to whether I was going to pick this book up or not. I was looking for a final book to complete an offer, and it was between this one and another. In the end, it was the mystery surrounding this book that won me over – there was potential, and I hoped it would live up to it.

Being such a short read, Midnight Sun was something I was able to complete in no time at all. I picked it up, and not long after I was finished. For such a short read, there was quite a lot happen throughout. Although there were plenty of things throughout the story, I did not feel as though there was enough development. It felt as though the author tried to include a set number of things, and in doing so the development was lost. Events hit us one after the other, and due to this the impact of the book was not all it could have been – we sacrificed emotional impact to receive cliched young adult contemporary romance moments and forced lines.

Honestly, this book could have been a truly emotional read if done right. The end did hit hard, at least, but it could have hit harder – had I been more invested, had we had a deeper attachment, and had we delved deeper into the characters’ lives. In other words, it all felt too quick to me, and due to this the emotional reaction the book could have brought from me was lost.

Overall, this book had potential but it did not live up to it. If I’m being painfully honest, had there not been the slight redemption through the ending hitting some emotional buttons this one would have been a two-star rating.

I read this book in a day - it's only 258 pages but I stormed through it and could not put it down. I have only just finished it and am writing this straight away. I'm still wiping tears from my eyes.

To be honest, I have no profound review on the writing-style or quality of this book, I was just hooked from page 1 and sped through it to the end. Love it!

I liked the premise for this book but the writing was just awful. So fake and forced and trying too hard to talk like a teenager. It was a very similar story to everything everything by Nicola yoon (which I loved) and I really wanted to like it but it just lacked depth and substance and the writing annoyed me througout.

Das Buch ist wie ein leichter Luftzug im Sommer. Du versuchst ihn festzuhalten, aber nach und nach entgleitet er dir...
"Midnight Sun" von Trish Cook war eines der ersten Jugendbücher, die ich in meinem Leben gelesen habe. Es erzählt eine außergewöhnliche Liebesgeschichte, die mich auf eine emotionale Reise mitgenommen hat. Das Buch ist ein wenig kitschig, aber genau das habe ich geliebt.
Die Charaktere gleiten in kleinen Schritten in dein Herz, bis sie es dir erbarmungslos stehlen. Katie und Charlie gehören eindeutig zusammen und doch plant das Leben etwas anderes mit ihnen.
Das Buch ist tiefgründig und wunderschön. Der Schreibstil ist angenehm zu lesen. Das Cover passt perfekt zur Geschichte. Ich kann euch dieses Buch nur wärmstens empfehlen!

Das berührendste Buch, das ich je gelesen habe...

Ich weine immernoch und kann nicht aufhören... Noch nie habe ich bei einem Buch so geweint...

In diesem Buch geht es um Katie, ein 18 Jähriges Mädchen, das an XP leidet. Eine Krankheit, bei der jeder Sonnenstrahl für sie tödlich enden kann. Jahrelang schwärmt sie heimlich für Charlie, ein gutaussehender Junge, der jeden Morgen an ihrem Fenster vorbei geht, ohne sie zu bemerken und verbringt ihre Tage schlafend, lebt in der Nacht. Doch irgendwann ist es nicht mehr genug. Und in dieser Nacht passiert das unglaubliche, Charlie Reed steht da, vor ihr und spricht sie an. Selbst Katie ahnt noch nicht, wie sich nun ihr Leben ändert.

Ich habe das Buch angefangen, weil ich Mal wieder etwas berührendes Lesen wollte, ohne die ganze Fantasy und Aktion, die ich sonst lese. Als ich erfuhr, dass dieses Buch verfilmt wird, war es auch schon entschieden.

Das Cover gefällt mir unglaublich sehr. Ich mag die Gestaltung im Blauton und der spezielle Schriftzug zieht mich richtig an. Ein Blickfang. Selbst die zwei Turteltauben stören mich nicht, obwohl ich da einen Sonnenaufgang oder eine Sternennacht passender gefunden hätte.

Die Schrift gefällt mir besonders gut. Sie ist breiter als in anderen Büchern, gut lesbar und auch sehr schnell und flüssig zu lesen. Der schwarze Galgenhumor gemischt mit unglaublicher Zärtlichkeit der Autorin, hat mich dann noch mehr begeistert. Zwei Tage brauchte ich für das Lesen dieses Buchs und ich konnte es nicht mehr aus der Hand legen.

Die Charaktere werden gut eingeführt, wie sie sind. Einige mehr, andere weniger. Charlie hätte beinahe noch mehr charakterisiert werden können, aber das stört überhaupt nicht.

Im gesamten habe ich dieses Buch einfach nur geliebt und könnte auch jetzt noch weinen, weil es so viel Gefühl hineingebracht hat, wie ich es noch nie erlebt habe... Es ist jetzt schon mein Favorit 2018!

Aufmerksam wurde ich auf das Buch ehrlich gesagt durch die Werbung im Kino für den Film. Die Vorschau hat mich sofort angesprochen und ich wusste, ich muss das Buch erst lesen und mir dann den Film anschauen. Der Klappentext verspricht ja auch schon eine schöne und emotionale Geschichte.

Katie war mir auch gleich sympathisch. Sie hat fast ihre gesamte Kindheit und Jugend nur mit ihrem Vater und ihrer besten Freundin zuhause verbracht. Die Idee, dass sie durchs Fenster einen Jungen jeden morgen beobachtet fand ich ganz süß, aber nicht neu. Ich fühlte mich minimal an „Du neben mir und zwischen uns die ganze Welt“ erinnert. Nur, dass der Junge nicht merkt, dass Katie ihn im Blick hat. Als sie dann durch einen Zufall auf ihn trifft funkt es natürlich sofort zwischen ihnen.

Mir tat Katie ab und an schon echt leid. Sie ist 18 Jahre alt, war noch nie auf einer Party oder hat je einen Jungen geküsst. Ihr Vater behütet sie schon zu sehr und sie darf abends kaum alleine das Haus verlassen. Natürlich habe ich vollstes Verständnis dafür, dass der Vater auf Katie aufpassen will, aber es ist schon zu viel.

Die Story ist jetzt nicht unbedingt was neues und natürlich war sie auch sehr vorhersehbar. Eine ähnliche Geschichte konnte man schon vor Jahren in Nicholas Spark’s „Zeit im Wind“ lesen. Doch Trish Cook schreibt so cool und emotional, dass man darüber schon fast hinwegsehen kann. Ich mochte das Buch von der ersten Seite an und wusste sofort, dass es mir gut gefallen wird. Dennoch war es mir an manchen Stellen doch zu vorhersehbar und ähnlich mit anderen Büchern.

Eine tolle und emotionale Geschichte. Ich fand zwar, dass es nichts neues und es auch ziemlich vorhersehbar war, aber die Emotionen in der Geschichte und der tolle Schreibstil machen das fast wieder wett.

First can we just appreciate the beauty of this cover. its so beautiful and fits right in with the book. This book is so cheesy but so beautiful and full of happiness. Katie who is the main charcater has xp which means she sleeps during the day and goes out at night. she has an amazing support circle around her with a dad who cares and her safety and health and loves her to bits and a best friend who keeps her sane during the day when she comes around and cant go out like the rest of the world. I really felt for katie and understood how fustrating it could be to be stuck inside while the rest of the world goes on around her, but also howshe did her best to fit in never the less. I also really liked the love interest Charlie. He was such a sweetheart and i liked how he also had a back story which fitted into both charlie and katies goals for each other. They are perfect together and i loved being apart of their story.

I gave this book 5 owls as it made me laugh, smile and sob and i had a great time reading this book!

Ho letto il libro dopo aver visto il film ed è stata la scelta migliore! Il libro in pratica è il copione della sceneggiatura del film parola per parola quindi sono la stessa identica cosa, quindi consiglio di vedere il film. Ho fatto delle ricerche e scoperto che il libro è nato dopo il film quindi mi è stato tutto più chiaro, il libro non è approfondito ma l'ho letto volentieri dopo il film, anche se quest'ultimo mi ha messo proprio Ko 😭
