This book is deceiving because it is not only a cookbook. It is a history book as well. "Memories of Dining along the Santa Fe Railroad". It is all about Fred Harvey wanting to establish quality dining rooms along the Santa Fe Railroad, his Harvey Houses, and the "Harvey Girls".
It was a great read for history lovers, and the period photographs say a lot. Not only that but there are over 200 vintage recipes, many of which I am going to try myself.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the very short snippets which laid out the historical context for the railroad. I also truly enjoyed the recipes and I loved seeing how many things can be made from the same simple ingredients. Also it was great to see a glimpse into the past to see how people ate similarly and differently from how we do today.

Would love to have this book in my personal library. Good story telling introduces each chapter of Fred Harvey recipes.

This is a fabulous book! It includes a history of the Harvey Houses that lined the railroads of our country as well as recipes made in the houses and later in the dining cars.

One of our favorite recipes is in this book. I go back to it again and again...Beef Stroganoff. Why is this recipe so special? I can get any number of stroganoff recipes easily in any cookbook. That is quite true. However, if you have someone in your family who either does not like mushrooms or is allergic to them - this recipe is perfect. It does not include mushrooms, but is still super creamy and yummy.

Lots of great recipes and information here. If you have seen the movie The Harvey Girls with Judy Garland this gives added depth to the life the Harvey employees' history.

I've read the book cover to cover 2 times and many more time for just the recipes.

This combines two of my favourite things: cooking and history. This is an amazing rags to riches story. The best part about it is that it's a true story. It also contains some amazing recipes. I can't wait to try them for myself!

great insight into a phase of the settling of the West that I knew nothing about. The Harvey girls impact on the civilizing of the American West picked up a few good recipes too
