Breakfast is an unconventional and fun cookbook created by the editors of Extra Crispy, a website devoted entirely to all things breakfast. Amazingly, the tasty recipes in here are only the second best thing about the cookbook. The most special thing about it are the essays peppered throughout. These are short, easily-digestible stories that are positive, heartfelt, and even laugh-out-loud funny. I’ve read every single one and have loved them all.

The book is divided into six sections:

1) Building Blocks of Breakfast—how to poach an egg, make bacon for a crowd, and dazzle your friends with an elevated French toast

2) Coffee, Booze, and Other Life-Enhancing Drinks—the best coffee to buy at the grocery store, how to make your own slurpees, and a no-fail La Croix hangover cure

3) Regional Meats—headcheese, scrapple, and boudin, oh my

4) Baking for the Easily Intimidated—common baking substitutions; the best brioche of your life; strudels, biscuits, scones, rolls, buns, and more

5) Advanced Breakfast Studies—how to make more difficult breakfast dishes like baked tamagoyaki (Japanese omelets), breakfast ratatouille, and fruit curd

6) Frankenfoods and Mash-ups—how to make mostly disgusting-sounding breakfast combinations, like cereal popsicles and Doritos quiche (though, to be fair, I haven’t tried any of them yet…)

When I picked up this book, I expected to find a bunch of boring ol’ breakfast recipes, but it really is so much more. I love the look of the book—all the big, bold fonts and quirky illustrations. The essays are entertaining and perfectly done. I also appreciate the many little side notes that offer cooking advice and product recommendations. (Kerrygold butter for the win, y’all!) Most importantly, the recipe selection in here is diverse, interesting, and genuinely delicious. What an enjoyable cookbook overall. I can already think of a couple people who I’ll be giving it to for Christmas.

Disclaimer - I’ve only flipped through this and cherry pick- read a few things that caught my eye. I will say, the author is hilarious and apparently shares my absurd sense of humor, as I guffawed several times and also told the book to “Fuck off” in equal measure. So naturally I love it already. I’mma buy this one. Also, it made me hungry, which in my meds-induced lack of appetite fugue is saying something.

Received this as a gift.

I guess I'm spoiled by Milk Street, Meathead Goldwyn, and America's Test Kitchen, but reading a collection of blog posts put into a book with a bunch of vague recipes (although some seem to be better written) was just kind of meh.

Many of the essays were enjoyable, but some of them were just trying a little to hard to be funny (or maybe they were being serious and just see the world THAT differently from me). This was probably conceived of as a bathroom reader or coffee table book or something you'd just look at here and there. Reading it from front to back (which I do with all my cookbooks - which is why I love when there's a story before each recipe) it just becomes a bit trying. Again, since it comes from a blog (or blog posts on a site), it probably worked better as something the reader would spend 5-15 minutes on a day.

I did earmark about 3 recipes from the book to try.

Breakfast is not only the most important meal, but also the best meal, no matter the time of day. The cover, bright as sunshine (or an egg yolk) holds inside oodles of fascinating information and loads of recipes. The vast majority are not what one would call health food but attention is paid to more nutritious fare such as oatmeal and smoothies. The perfect addition to any coffee table (as one might expect, coffee is a subject this hip and cool cookbook covers) and a fab gift idea.

This is not really a cook book as it is food stories that contain recipes. It’s not just about breakfast; it’s about challenging the reader to think beyond just eggs and bacon. The challenge is what else can go with breakfast (Goetta anyone?), Doritos crust quiche? Lox n bagel inspired sushi?

This was a fun read with lots of page tabs for fun new breakfast ideas! The bad news, not every idea had a recipe to go with it. Ex. The crosshatchelback potatoes…

There are so really great things in this book. Good advice on egg preparation, especially how to get your ideal preference in a boiled egg. There are quite a few good recipes for waffles, pancakes, etc, too.

However, this book used the TH slur in lieu of pork roll, and so I can't give it more than three stars. We don't do that around here.
