The final entry in the significant, albeit unnamed, Executioner trilogy finds Mack Bolan, using his alias John Phoenix, back in the USA after being framed for a political murder by the KGB and still seeking vengeance from those responsible for the brutal assault on Stony Man Farm. He quickly discovers a conspiracy between the KGB and the Mafia, who are both after him, and Bolan racks up an impressive body count while uncovering clues that lead him to the very heights of the US government. The novel delivers the goods for the riveting spy/espionage action and the relentless violence. Mertz ties up the loose ends to a satisfying and surprising conclusion, and sets in motion a major transformation in the Mack Bolan mythology.

I guess Don and Stephen got tired of Bolan taking out terrorists because now he’s back to taking on the mafia AND the KGB in one of the most confusing storylines to date. I get this was written in the height of the Cold War with Russia so the idea of international terrorist had begun to take a back seat to nuclear proliferation between the world’s 2 super powers, but did that really justify taking The Executioner away from blowing up military hardsites in Afghanistan and replacing them with a villain we’ve seen in 38 previous books (that was pretty much annihilated off the face of the planet) and teaming them up with Russian state intelligence? Honestly, while I applaud the idea, the plot just doesn’t work here and leads to a muddled mess of a story that feels dated and rather convoluted. However, as he’s shown in past books in the series, Mertz’s ability to write some awesome action scenes is on full display here and is almost worth it for this moments alone.

Basically, it's a perfect Executioner novel, plenty of action, and enough of a story to keep you interested. Mertz does a great job in this last book of a trilogy detailing his shift to be on his own again, this time against the KGB. The other two books are #62 and Super Bolan #2. Bolan is looking for the high-level mole in the government that got his beloved April killed in the attack on Stonyman Farm. To find that name, he is blitzing through DC, going after the KGB resources, including the local mafia that are doing a drug deal with the local KGB man. This running and gunning goes straight to the White House and will change the outlook of Bolan's life.

Highly recommended, a great read, and is essential in understanding the books past this point.

This book marks a turning point in the series. A direct sequel to DAY OF MOURNING, Mack Bolan, aka John Phoenix, is back on the hunt for the mole high in our government that was responsible for the attack on Stony Man Farm and the deaths ofa number of god people, most especially April Rose.

The Mafia, the D.C. branch, is part of a drug deal with a Russian KGB agent. And that draws the ire even more of the old Mafia fighter. one old enemy joined with a new one.

It also sends Bolan along a new path.

Bolan isn't finished with the KGB yet!

He had met enough good Russians during his mission into that incredible part of the world for him to understand that in reality the KGB was a thing, a cancer on the body of the planet. There was little regard for nationality or political ideology, only dark cannibalistic drives that victimize the vulnerable and meek who were no match for those who would mercilessly exploit, rape and destroy them. In a word - evil. The KGB was the new mafia in Bolan's book. The KGB: the spokes and hub of world terrorism. It had to be stopped. A war of attrition was the only solution this Soldier could see. The scope would be wider than Bolan's previous anti-terror campaign and the aim of the blows more telling against a worldwide network of evil that made the Mafia seem like a drop in the ocean in comparison.
