1887ൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച നോവലാണിത്. ആദ്യത്തെ ലക്ഷണമൊത്ത നോവലാണ് ഇന്ദുലേഖയെങ്കിൽ മലയാളത്തിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ നോവലാണ് കുന്ദലത. പ്രാചീന മലയാളത്തിൽ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് മൂലം സംഭാഷണങ്ങളിൽ അല്പം വിരസത അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടേക്കാം. ചെറിയ പദ്യ ശകലങ്ങളും ഇവയിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു. രാജ്യവും യുദ്ധവും പ്രണയവും സൗഹൃദവും ഈ നോവലിൽ നിറഞ്ഞുനിൽക്കുന്നു. വായനയിൽ പലപ്പോഴും അപൂർണ്ണത അനുഭവപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്. കുന്ദലത എന്ന തലക്കെട്ട് വായിക്കുമ്പോൾ അവരാണ് നായിക എന്ന് തോന്നിയേക്കാം. പക്ഷേ സ്വർണ്ണമയി എന്ന കഥാപാത്രത്തിന് ഇതേ പ്രാധാന്യം തന്നെ കൊടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. താരാനാഥനും കുന്ദലതയും പ്രതാപചന്ദ്രനും സ്വർണമയിയും പ്രണയവും ഇവരെല്ലാം തമ്മിലുള്ള ബന്ധവും പുസ്തകത്തിൽ വ്യക്തമാക്കാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. പ്രതിനായകന്മാർ ഇല്ലാത്ത എല്ലാവർക്കും നൻമ വരണമെന്ന് ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്ന ഒരു നോവൽ.

Recorded as the first Malayalam novel, 'Kundalatha' is penned by Appu Nedungadi. He was a great scholar of literature and had been an initiative in many socio-economic developments of his native land, Calicut. The entire novel is divided into 20 little parts. The story is mostly set in Kalinga Rajya and is centered around its titular character, Kundalatha. Nedungadi had attempted this without enclosing it in a particular period, still, the setting, language usage, and character detailing pull it many years back. Though being the first novel attempt in Malayalam, this novel jumps forward and backward alternatively and there are stories running parallel. The author opens up a confusing state in his readers which will be only sorted out in the concluding chapters. His treatment of female characters feels more liberal and he had also plugged in other sections of society in a worthy way.
