I was disappointed and donated this to the library. Some of the best towns sintra etc, not mentioned as it should be especially the wells. The Initiation Well (Poço Iniciático) in Sintra, Portugal, is a stunning 27-meter deep "inverted tower" located at the Quinta da Regaleira estate. Built between 1904 and 1911, it features a moss-covered spiral staircase designed for secret Masonry or Templar initiation rituals, not for water. It is a top tourist site representing Dante's Nine Circles of Hell.Key Details for Visitors:Location: Part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra.Design: An inverted tower with 9 levels (flights of stairs) designed by Luigi Manini for Carvalho Monteiro.Experience: Includes a descending spiral staircase, subterranean tunnels, and a small lake you traverse by stepping stones.Best Time to Visit: Generally open daily from 10:00 AM, with last entry around 5:30 PM (hours can change). It is recommended to go when dry to avoid slippery conditions and flooding. Getting There: Accessible from Lisbon by train and a short tuk-tuk/bus ride, or as part of guided tours. BTW I have MS and it was slippery but a lot of places to hold on and about 2 inches of water at the bottom, but a highlight of Lisbon/close day trips. Don't miss it.
