Soraya Devil is the Enchantress, one of the most powerful magics in the world… But she’s so much more than that, and everyone’s constantly attempting to unravel her past and secrets. She’s not worried though, as many have tried and never find out the truth.
It’s safer for everyone that way.
The owner of Paranormal Investigations—among other companies—she has her own answers to find. Though she’s continuously pulled in too many directions, she always answers the calls that make even her magic tingle in warning at the danger.
When a sprite begins killing people in Chicago, she has to team up with SPU—Supernatural Police Unit—to figure out who summoned the demon and why before more die. While that’s enough of a challenge, the main hurdle is the team lead on the case who loathes all magics. But when he can’t seem to get past his hate and do his job, can Soraya make an ally from an enemy, or will the evil unleashed in the city she loves win the day?
Erin is a born Chicagoan who decided to state hop a bit, given she works from home. She currently resides in Georgia with her pup, Lord Vader Flynn. With an eclectic and addictive personality, there isn’t much that doesn’t interest her or she won’t pour herself into if it catches her fancy. She has always been interested in the darker aspects of life and mythologies—especially vampires, shifters, the occult, and anything paranormal.
To date, she has published more paranormal books than she can keep up with the characters for, in different genres with dedicated readers who await each release to her numerous series under any of the three Flynn names she writes.
This book offers Erin R. Flynn's signature bad A, takes no crap, fair to a fault, out for good FMC. So of course I did love our FMC Saroya. She is so surrounded by mystery though. While we know "The Enchantress" is a force all her own we still don't know why. I'm wondering when, in the series, that information will be made known to the reader.
We spend most of this book getting world building, just enough backstory to hook us, and a freaking ton of explanations to the bigot MC wolf dude. I'm not going to lie, I see him becoming a romantic interest and i'm hoping Saroya has had enough assholes already to not add him to our repertoire. Here is hoping. Despite the ongoing shark shifter case that Saroya and entourage are working on this book focus's on building Saroya's character and does it so detailed. You can feel the indignation and grandstanding going on throughout all the scenes; however, it never gets boring. Saroya's little revenge schemes add a touch of humor into all the explanations and made me as the reader feel like I was part of her in crowd.
The start of this was pretty good, I thought the author packed so much into the pages. I'm looking forward to continuing this series to see if we get any answers soon!
With this author I swing from one extreme to the other. Some of her series I adore passionately; Seraphine Thomas, House of Garner and Artemis University, and others leave me a little cold. When I first read this book it was in the latter group, and didn’t read the rest of the series, but as a new one came out I thought I’d give it another go. I’m glad I did as I enjoyed it much more the second time round.
I think my initial lack of enthusiasm with this book was the feeling that The Enchantress, Soraya Devil was pretty arrogant. Revisiting this book I can see that that it isn’t so much arrogant as extreme confidence. Soraya is 1000 years old, more powerful than all enchanters in the USA and someone who has been hunted most of her long life. She also protects a vast corporation that employs thousands of supernaturals in a world that isn’t particularly welcoming of them. She is wounded from her dark history and protective of others and she will do anything to keep hold of her secrets to protect them all.
Once I had that in mind, my attitude towards this book changed and I enjoyed it a lot. Soraya’s PI company is called in to help the Chicago PD’s supernatural division as they are on contract. She wouldn’t normally go but the job seems like it could be dangerous so she is called in. She comes into contact with a murder that looks like it has been supernaturally caused. This is problem enough, because of the very dark energy infesting the site, but it also comes with Detective Hunt, a werewolf who regards magic users with a dark festering hatred. He is deeply suspicious of Soraya and she knows it, as a mind reader. Trying to solve the murder and deal with a suspicious detective on top of running an empire and dealing with her personal problems would be too much for most people, but Soraya Devil isn’t most people.
This is a well paced book, that carefully reveals a little of Soraya and her past, but not much for a 1000 year old character. This leaves plenty of scope for the rest of the series, which is bound to be a decent size considering the author and her tendency towards never ending series. This is a great set up book where we learn about the world in which she lives and her friends and colleagues. I get the feeling that the next book will be even better.
Downgrading to 3-stars from 4-stars - I found the enchantress FMC Soraya a little too abrasive this time around, and her employees tried a little too hard to make her seem like a generous goddess for Detective Hunt and other critics of hers. I did still enjoy her tragic backstory, but I didn't really like her competence and "amazing abilities" getting shoved in my face page after page. Also, considering that she was centuries of years old, her personality was a little too unbelievably modern.
I feel as though there should have been an actual ending to the investigation in the story. There was no reason why the woman summoned a sprite for revenge. There was no explication to the deaths, it was just now the sprite is erased and we know the summoner is dead so cased closed. I totally felt like the ending left me hanging and not in a good way. I would also proof read again, but I’ll still read the series because I want to know if it gets better.
I get excited whenever this author comes out with a new book in her many series or a new series but I don't know why. Her series are pretty much the same thing. There's lots of diatribes, rants, tirades etc. that get old really fast.
The MC is crass, but amusing. Unlike most book series of late, the story wraps up in a neat little package by the end rather then throwing in an inciting incident for the next book. Something I truly appreciate.
⭐️ 1.5 / 5 – The Enchantress (Book 1) by Erin R. Flynn
This is the first Erin R. Flynn book I’ve genuinely struggled to finish - and that’s saying something. Normally, I can follow her worlds and concepts easily, but this one felt like an uphill battle from start to finish.
It seemed like the author was trying too hard to tie in or rework another M/M story she’s written, and it came across as forced - like an attempt to repackage a previous series inside this Why Choose setup. It just didn’t make sense. I didn’t care about Dorrian, and I definitely didn’t want a full-on M/M subplot when the focus should’ve been on the female lead and her relationships. Watching her “alternate self” (or, as she even calls him, her brother) in sexual scenes was honestly just weird. It added nothing but confusion.
The whole dimension/multiverse angle was another miss for me. I’m so tired of overcomplicated, interdimensional storylines that pull attention away from the main plot - I don’t care what’s happening in some other universe, I want to follow what’s happening here. It felt like Disney’s multiverse fatigue all over again.
And whose story was this supposed to be anyway - Soraya’s or Dorrian’s? The narrative focus was all over the place.
Detective Hunt was another issue. Why was he allowed to witness the interdimensional events and get insider info about Soraya? The group didn’t even like him! There was no rapport there, and his presence just made no sense. Plus, I’m really over these abrasive male leads Flynn keeps writing. Not every man needs to be an unlikable jerk to create tension. It’s starting to feel like man-hating disguised as romance conflict.
The pacing was also a mess - one moment Soraya’s serving a pineapple to a bad psychic, and the next she’s in a vampire dining hall. What even happened in between? And when did Victor supposedly make that comment about Walter? The transitions were choppy and confusing.
Overall, I did not enjoy this story. I’ll give Book 2 a chance in hopes it picks up, but right now, I’m not invested in Soraya, her universe, or this confusing dimension/multiverse setup. And please - if you’re writing a long series (four or more books), give your readers a glossary. It’s incredibly frustrating trying to keep track of everything, especially when there can be large gaps between the next book in a series.
Maybe after Book 2 it’s time for me and this author to take a bit of a break.
This was one of the best books I read by Erin R Flynn. Which is a shame since the series only has 5 books. The other series (seraphine thomas, artemis university ,...) I read from her all had the same problems : - goes way too fast, mixing way too many plots to be able to follow it all - half of the book is people saying how great and perfect and awesome and amzeballs and brave and creative and inspiring and... the h is. And the other half is the bad or petty villains being sexist or other to her and the h going on a rant telling them how uneducated they are.
I can handle these 2 issues pretty well but when its every single page of every single book of every single series.... it gets a bit annoying. But I do like h and the heroes so I keep reading them.
What I mean to say is that this series didn't do that. This was a grown ass woman, who has issues, and is tired of mistrusting everyone but she does not go on rants 1/100 has much as the other heroines go. Anyways. I simply liked this book much more than her other series and i hope she will keep writing this series (and others) like this.
This book was an absolutely amazing introduction to Soraya’s life and the supernatural world in Chicago. Enchanters/Enchantresses, shifters, casters and even vampires play a role in this world. It took me a little to get into it, because I had the misconception that it was more sci-fi than paranormal, and I struggle with that genre. I was wrong. Majorly wrong. There are other dimensions - which for those that follow the DC universe, would see it as the arrowverse and how some of the heroes are from different versions of earth - and for those that don’t, it’s like the multiverse (google it, it’s really interesting). Erin has done another amazing job at building this world and I love how detailed it is. Soraya is strong, powerful and kind. I absolutely want to be here when I grow up. The world is complex and so are the people in it. Honestly loved this book, but that doesn’t surprise me since Erin wrote it. If you loved Artemis University or Seraphine Thomas, then this book will be right up your alley.
I love this series. It is completely different then her other series which is awesome. I love her other series as well but to many authors ride on the success of one universe/series and just make another and another watered down version after another. This book has unique characters and relationships that are great. It's also not such a complete and different world that every single thing needs explained, which I appreciate. I hate feeling dumb as I read a book and can't comprehend concepts and this book doesn't do that. I'm downloading book 2 next!
I did not like most of this, it went into long exposition frenetically defending the MC. It explained in great detail how her magnanimous empire works when I didn’t know enough about the world for it to have context. But it was unique enough that I read on, skimming the exposition to get to the next plot points. Then at the very end the MC SAs someone, which was atrocious in any scenario, much less one where the whole book was spent building her up as the most awesome person ever. TW revenge porn, SA, kink shaming

I'm not entirely sure how Erin does it but I was blown away that this series was just as good as Artemis University is! I love the fast pace almost burnout stories that flow with both responsibility and justice throughout every book. The story is unique and changing with maturity and respect from the main characters that I absolutely adore! The magic is fun and the power is heady. Erin is definitely a favorite author of mine!
Fast-moving story about a powerful enchantress that is protecting a lot of people. Confusing to get into but worth to keep reading. I liked that there was one main plotline. In the next books a lot of things are going on at the same time which detracts a little bit of the story, characters and world building.
I don't think this is a true RH as there might be different sexual partners, but nothing lasting and no relationships. I do hope that changes but I'm about to start book 4 when writing this review and I see little improvement in that regard.
I truly enjoyed this story. It was a fun quick read with plenty of action and yet fun. This is my second time reading through & I loved it as much the second time as I did the first. That is rare in a series. Plus if you love to laugh this is an excellent series as it kicks butt and tickles your funny bone.
While I have read 3 other series written by Erin Flynn. I'm not entirely convinced that I enjoy this one yet. It has potential however it is a little all over the place for my liking. I don't really understand the significance of the other dimension and why it matters if they cannot travel there or really communicate. Hopefully I will enjoy the next book.
I enjoyed this series. Was disappointed that it’s not finished, but it’s been good. I did feel like I got lost in the details of her businesses and day to day details. Enough so that it detracts a little bit. I didn’t really get sucked into the story, so I wouldn’t call it a page turner. It was worth reading, but not sure I want to invest more time into future books.
I can't put into words how much I enjoy ALL books from this author everytime I get cault up in on series I discover a new one and I fall in love all over again, and I honestly could not pick one over another!!! Amazing never have I found an author I loved all books written by them. Absolutely amazing!!!! Much love!!!!
I like that she has a lot of qualities that makes sure that the men she interacted with doesn’t walk all over her. She knows what she is worth and doesn’t back down. There are a few things that we are going to see changes that come into her life that she will not like but I think that she will need. I also think that forgiveness will help her move on.
This author is an artist. Every book I’ve read of hers has been amazing and leaves me wanting more of her work. This book is incredibly written and so very easy to get into. I was hooked from the first few chapters but I usually am when it comes to this author. Thanks for making such amazing art that you share with us. Can’t wait to read more.
I have now read Soraya's story from beginning to get last book that has been published (#9) and I was so addicted to the characters in this story, that I wish there was more.
I have never been disappointed in any of Erin's work as they were so well thought out and the character development is always wonderful.
I am a HUGE fan ! I absolutely adore Sera , and the Enchantress is fast becoming a favorite too ! I will be one clicking this series as soon as you put them out !! More , more , more !!
Acrylic good read over all that I greatly enjoyed and I will be pursuing the other books in the series. I didn’t agree with one of the political opinions of the main character but that’s about it. Overall, still a great series.
I had a little trouble getting into the book at the very beginning. Most likely because I didn't know the characters. Once I got to a certain point everything clicked and I read it straight through. A good fantasy with lots of potential.
I truly enjoy most of Flynn’s work, and this new to me series is no exception. Strong, alpha female with both brains and grit - intelligent people around her and a world built by imagination and intrigue. Delightful.
Another awesome book with action romance sex and suspense all in one book. The way she writes the main character you think she is real. The trama and hard ship she endures is eppic.
Great start to this series. Loved the introduction to the characters. Erin flynn is an amazing writer and story teller. Once again this is a great supernatural story :). Highly recommend
What an interesting format book to a series. I liked the hints of her past you see and the investigation side of things and all the cool businesses and things she does.
Explaining all the nuances of magic was way too much. “She purrs” was used a lot through the story. Also, What I didn’t understand is why she kept Hunter around. He was always pissing her off and being an ass. I guess she likes that.
