Kalvan Monroe is worried. Every story he's ever read told him things should be better now. He mastered his magic, defeated his evil stepfather, and freed the land. Everything should be good now. But in breaking the Winter King's power, he also broke the spell that helped his mother keep her grip on reality.

Basically . . . things at home aren't great. And it turns out that

Witty, action-packed, and surprisingly poignant, Kelly McCullough’s Spirits, Spells, and Snark is a breathless go-kart race of a novel, likely to delight readers of Rick Riordan or Roshani Chokshi. Aided by his sarcastic magical fire hare Sparx and his young magician friends, 13-year-old Kalvan must control his elemental magic, protect his fragile mother, and avoid being assassinated or expelled from his alternative school. The forces of evil that he faced in Magic, Madness, and Mischief have gr ...more

Poor Kalvan.
That was the predominant thought I had as I was reading this book. The poor kid is dealing with a broken home, a mentally ill mother, and major magical dilemmas mostly on his own. The magic makes it so action-packed that any kid is sure to enjoy the read, but it's the relationships and emotional situations that really make this a great read. The mental illness is beautifully viewed from Kalvan's perspective, where he logically understands but really just wants his mom there with him

As Kalvan Monroe continues to learn how to harness his magical gifts, he must also fend off many enemies, among them someone he thought had been handled in the previous book. But it appears that his stepfather, Oliver, is still hanging around, and Kalvan's victory came at a great price--his mother's mental health. This action-packed book will keep readers on their toes as they see whether Kalvan has it inside himself to survive. It's a good thing that he has friends and guidance from Sparx. Ther ...more

*I received a free eARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley*

I think I enjoyed this book even more than the first. We learned more about the system of magic, and it seemed like Kalvan really grew as a person. Some of the secondary characters were developed a little more, as well. I appreciated the author's treatment of mental illness and the effect it can have others while still remaining respectful. There is a bit of language so I don't think I'll be adding this book to my elementa

I enjoyed this second visit with Kalvan, Dave, and Spark and all their friends. It is a story of Kalvan learning to accept and understand his powers, himself, and his history. At times the spell work was a bit complex. And while I feel that mental health is topic that needs to be talked about more and shown in books more, at times it felt a little too much for a middle grade reader.
But an enjoyable read with magic and spells and familiars.

Kelly McCullough was raised and educated by free-range hippies. Later he received a degree in theater and worked in improv. That combination was the perfect preparation for his current career as author and cat herder. He lives and writes in the Midwest with his physics-professor wife, Laura. He enjoys hiking and biking and his role as self-heating cat furniture. He is the author of the WebMage and ...more
