4 'Some moments are beyond words' Stars.

There are two novellas included here. The Storm & Song for the Dying. They are unique and can’t be compared to one another.

The Storm.

The Storm by Ms. Hunter is another great addition to her Irin Chronicles series and although a novella it most certainly does pack a punch. I can only recommend reading the series as this can’t be read as a standalone. There is so much depth and history here that it is worth it. The book is full of emotion it is about pain and loss and yet being able to grieve when given the chance. That there is hope.

Here it is Max and Renata’s story and what a story they have. Their love, avoidance and hate spans over a very long time. They both experienced the aftermath of the Rending where thousands of Irin women and children were murdered. It is hard to overcome something so brutal especially after the revelation that not all Grigori are evil.

But Max is persistent that he has followed Renata wherever she goes. This time it’s no different. The loss that they have encountered and each has dealt with it differently but after such a long time it is time to heal. To face fears to move on. Not an easy feat especially for these two.

Song for the Dying.

Here we get to experience Leo’s and Max’s past when they are summoned to Riga as their Grandfather is dying.

Leo & Max travel with their mates and aren’t sure what to expect as it has been over a hundred years since they were last there.

Growing up with no women, no Irina song to comfort them was hard and Max & Leo didn’t get the love that they deserved. Hold hurts here will start to heal with the help of Kyra and Renata and their healing power.

It was saddening to experience the past that they suffered and that they were saved and when they find out by whom they are shocked. Even the Fallen have morals, there must be a balance between good and evil.

Once again Ms. Hunter grips me with her storytelling and are impeccable writing and this applies for both novellas. They are perfect.

I felt all the emotions that our MC have experienced and savour this author’s writing so much. Since the beginning of all of her paranormal romance it has been a true pleasure and each book keeps on getting better and better. So keep them coming.

Each plot is unique and the secondary characters really add to the story. Vasu is a favourite of mine and well I would love for Azril to get a book. Even Death deserves to fall in love.
Next book up is The Seeker with Rhys & Meera. Do I know Meera? I can’t remember.

The Storm is a raw, beautiful, tumultuous love story set in Hunter's Irin Chronicles world. Within minutes of opening the book, I found myself once again surrendering to the author's lyrical, hypnotic voice - a siren's song luring me back to this world and characters I love so much. Beautifully written, The Storm is another masterpiece in one of my favorite fantasy series ever!

The wait for Max & Renata's story is finally over. Through a series of flashbacks, readers are privy to the dance and battle of wills that have occurred over the past eighteen years between Irin Scribe Maxim of Riga and Irina warrior Renata. And now, at the top of a mountain in the middle of winter, their paths have crossed once again. Max is half frozen when he knocks on the door of Renata's ancestral home, knowing in his heart it is do-or-die time - his last chance to convince Renata to accept him as her mate and make a home with him. If she refuses again, he'll walk away. Renata is as determined and strong as ever in her convictions to resist this magnificent male. Both still suffer from the long-term, devastating aftermath of tragic pasts. What will happen when Renata is forced to face hers?

The Storm is a compelling, action-packed story that held me captive. Hunter's settings are always so rich in imagery - teasing the senses and transporting readers across miles, straight into the heart of characters and stories. The Storm is no exception. The story may be short on pages, but it delivered all I could ask for and more. A plot that flawlessly weaves past and present while cracking the door for the future, complex characters carrying baggage from past tragedies along with a burning desire for one another, and a setting to get lost in, one that will take your breath away. All that and seductive, passionate love scenes . . . who could ask for more? Another Must Read in this fabulous series!

Song for the Dying is the second novella in this book, and it's also a heart-touching story that will bring tears to your eyes. I'll just say that Max and Leon are called back to their childhood home and must finally come to terms with their past. Another magically written, Must Read addition to the series! Perfection!

*My Rating: 4.5 Stars
**Many thanks to the author for an arc of this book.

If you have been following the story, then you have been getting bits and pieces of Renata and Max's love history but this book gives a fuller picture of them as a couple.

Renata made him work for her love. For good reason as she didn't want to deprive him of the the fullness of mating with one's reshon. But Max is steadfast and loyal, and he fought for the chance with Renata. I really enjoyed him proving over and over again that he was in it for the long haul.

I also like the shift in narrative pertaining to the Gregori. They were no longer the bogeymen from the prior books, but they were capable of having a true love bond, mate and family. I really like where the author is going with these angelic descendants and the humans. I am looking forward to book 7.

Review copy was received from Author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I was lucky enough to review the Amid the Winter Snow anthology which included the novella The Storm.  Now The Storm has been released on its own and has an added novella,  Song For The Dying, which almost doubles the length to that of a regular book. There is also a preview for The Seeker which releases next month!

The Storm

A colorful blend of locations in the world of The Irin Chronicles series , I would only read this in order with the series. Because the series is excellent, and having all of it for background and development of the characters make this novella all the more special. There was a bit of couple communication issue, but The Storm avoids my problems with insta-love by covering many years in the couple's life. The world and the plot here are a striking tapestry along with the romance evoking a wealth of feelings.

I could have used even more time with Max and Renata, so I was happy to get the next story chronologically in Song For The Dying. I enjoyed so much having a view of the life they have built together over the last couple years, as well as updates on the rest of the brothers.

Max and Leo, along with Renata and Kyra,  go back to the farm where they spent their childhood to visit their father and grandfather. These men are all that remains of their family which were killed in the Rending when they were babies.  Max and Leo have not been back since their childhood when they left to become warriors.

I love the history and connection this story provides.  The trip gives Max and Leo a more adult view of their childhood and new memories to carry them forward as they build their own families.  They learn about their other family members, including their mothers, as there was too much grief to hear about it as children. While The Seeker will bring the story of Rhys, I hope we will continue to see vignettes of the families of his brothers.

I already read The Storm when it was included as part of a collection earlier. The story and Song for the Dying were both deep dives into how love, forgiveness, and grief are partners in our journey through life. I was particularly moved by Leo and Max’s story and found myself weeping at the beauty of Elizabeth’s word and her ability to capture complex emotions. I’m going to be thinking about these stories for many days to come!

If you love fantasy books: READ ELIZABETH HUNTER!
MAX! This guy. This is the guy I have been waiting for. Ever since I met him in The Scribe, Max has held a special place in my heart. After Rhys, he's probably my favorite Irin dude. He's tough and mysterious. What is he up too? Where does he disappear to? He's got secrets and a secret Irina Girl too. (I almost thought he was a bad guy once. Shame on me!)
Anyway, we finally get Max and Renta's story. We've seen them circling each other in the other books now for a while now. It's a short story but it doesn't seem like it while reading it. (And check out the awesome cover!) After I read their story, a sighed a contented sigh, and it reinforced my resolve that the Irin Chronicles are my all time favorite series by Elizabeth Hunter. Then I'll read her Elemental Legacy series, about Ben & Tiny, and I think: THIS is my favorite series by E. Hunter.
(Do you see the trend here?) Just so everyone knows: Elizabeth Hunter is my favorite living author. There I said it, I am sure you can all go live your lives now in peace.

‘The Storm,’ by Elizabeth Hunter was so wonderfully written.
Renata, a strong and fiercely independent Irina, has fought valiantly to protect and overcome the wrongs brought to her people. And though the world is changing around her, she has yet to heal the damage inflicted upon her heart.
Maxim, a determined and compassionate Irin Scribe, has always marched to beat of his own drum. Though he is incredibly loyal... he has always walked/flirted along the edges of right & wrong, with danger, and life. Finding Renata was like finally finding heaven, and he is determined not to loose either that feeling or Renata.

‘Song for the Dying,’ is a novella provided at the end of this novel... and a look into the cold childhood of Max and Leo.
Max and Leo, receive a letter from Leo father, Max’s uncle, Peter. To inform them both that their grandfather is fading and are urged to return home. This journey home, is one filled with bitter resentment and unhealed wounds... but is nonetheless made with their mates, Kyra and Renata. Will they be able to bid the grandfather farewell and forgive? With their mates ease their journey and bridge the distance?
‘Song for the Dying,’ is a very memorable and heartwarming read!

This was such an amazing emotional book. I loved it!! I love the chemistry between Max and Renata.. it doesn't matter what is said between them they can't deny their feelings. It takes a special little girl and a special place but they are finally one. I don't want to give anything away but this is one of those books that you want to have a box of kleenex handy. And then there is the short story Song For The Dying... oh my gosh!!! I loved it!! It answered so many questions and was such a tender, emotional wonderful story. This book is one that I will want on my bookshelves.

I was given the opportunity to read an early copy of The Storm. It originally appeared in the anthology Amid the Winter Snow but has the added bonus of a new story Song for the Dying. The Storm is the story of the tempestuous relationship between Max and Renata, set in Midwinter. It is story of loss and love. We meet new characters, who I hope will feature in future stories. The bonus story Song for the Dying continues Max & Renata‘s Story but also brings Leo and Kyra in. Max and Leo must return to their childhood home. It is a beautiful story. I found the whole book to be beautiful. I loved The Storm the first time I read the anthology, but now with the addition of the next journey, it is a beautiful, heart rending, tear making, uplifting journey of love, loss and hope. Highly recommended.

The world of The Irin Chronicles is one that is steeped in family, tradition, and second chances and The Storm is no different. It's a beautiful story of letting love in, even when it scares you senseless. It's intimate setting makes it feel reverent, but I suppose that was the point. It's beautifully told and you can feel the hurt experienced my the main characters beginning to heal as they finally find each other. Song for the Dying was such a wonderful continuation of Max and Renata's story. The forgiveness seen after centuries of pain is powerful and satisfying. Overall, this is an awesome addition to the Irin story!

I have long been a fan of the Irin World and this story is a welcome addition to that spectacular series. Elizabeth Hunter writes flawlessly and the depth of emotion she evokes is so intense that the reader is moved beyond words. This novella brings a beautiful close to Max and Renata’s story as they finally come together in an avalanche of love and passion and healing. It is a celebration of life and hope.

This book includes two novellas. The Storm which tells us story of Max and Renata (earlier published in the Amid The Winter Snow anthology) and Song for the Dying that takes us back to Max and Leo’s childhood home.
Both stories are 5 star reads for me but Song For The Dying is in my opinion the most beautiful heartbreaking and heartwarming story this author has written to date. It touched my heart and made me stare at the wall after I finished it. So so beautiful!

Hunter never disappoints. The Irin Chronicles are one of my top series that I recommend.
The 2 novellas included are wonderful insights to characters we’ve seen throughout the series with questions answered. Sure to leave you loving them.

Leo and Kyra and Max and Reni. Just when I thought I couldn’t love characters more... left me on an emotional high.

The Storm
89 points/100 (4.5 stars/5)

Max has been chasing after Renata for 18 years. Quite literally, as Renata disappears every time to a new hiding hole. But Max is done chasing, he is going to win her this time. Renata still holds the wounds of the Rending close to her heart, she has lost so much. She doesn't want to hurt Max with her selfishness.

Another story we have seen part of before, but this time we're telling the whole story. We had seen hints, the other characters have seen hints. Just no one knew what was going on, no one knew it had been going on for years prior to the start of this series. This was a good story, and different from the others in its own way. It isn't a whirlwind romance, it is a slow, patient burn.

This novella was split pretty clearly into two parts. The first part focused on Renata and Max and their backstory. They are alone together, hurting each other, trying not to hurt each other, wanting each other but trying not to. It is a good time for a reader who likes reading about them. The second half introduces more characters, and a way for Renata to heal.

I think I wish more than anything for this book, that I could have seen more of their chase. There was so much story there, despite so little words being told.  The constant cycle of finding each other again before Renata runs away must have been excruciating for both of them. Plus there is even more pain on top of it all. I love broken characters, and characters that deliberately sabotage themselves are a part of that archetype. Sometimes it can be annoying, but this time it isn't. Probably because Renata is being selfless, trying to do the thing she sees as right.

The Grigori in this novella are pretty interesting, and I kind of hope we get to see them again. They're a Grigori Reshon pair, trying to raise a child together without hurting her the way the mother has been hurt. The little girl is also an empath capable of great healing. A bit coincidental, really. However, it is the perfect healing that is needed. Not just for Renata, though it did help her overcome what she needed in order to be with Max proper. No, the entire race is going to need this kind of healing. That little girl is going to have a lot of work ahead of her when she grows up a little and gets some training.

Song for the Dying
88 points/100 (4.5 stars/5)

Max and Leo have been recalled because their grandfather is dying. They go, despite knowing they aren't exactly wanted there. After all, they do want to see why they were called home.

This is a shorter novella than the last, about half the length. It is the perfect capstone to Max and Leo's story. From their stories, we learned that they grew up in a less than ideal environment. There were no women. Just men who were hurting, grieving their own losses. They weren't able to care for the children the way they should have, the way they wanted to.

There are so many kinds of pain and healing in this novella. The pain of the past and feeling unwanted. The pain of being estranged from those you love. The loss of mates and best friends and children. The healing of finally talking about your problems with the one you feel has hurt you. The range of the emotional needs of the characters in this story is outstanding.

The best part of this novella is we get to see a natural death. The entire race has been so hurt by violence, both because of actual violence against a person, or self-violence due to to the first. It is also good because we get to see Death again, and he is such a kind soul. The whole scenario was incredibly wholesome, even if it is sad. Death comes for us all someday, might as well hope it is while you are surrounded by those you love, returning to the arms of the ones you also loved.

Wow. Just wow. I had to wait twenty four hours to even be able to write this review. Ms. Hunter has done it again, but then, she always does. But this book..... this book.... has almost made me incoherent. I realize that fans of Ms. Hunters have a soft spot for Malachi and Ava from the Irin Chronicles. After all, those characters are the ones that sent us all down the wondrous rabbit hole of Hunter Heaven. But. My favorite characters have always been Damien and Sari. Their story was heart wrenching to say the least. That tale could not have been easy to write, and it was certainly not easy to read. I can now say with certainty that Max and Renata are my second favorite Irin and Irina. Their story is almost parallel with Damien and Sari, as Renata is a warrior. She is fierce and protective and independent and a hard woman to love. But Max does. Gah! These men!
The Irin world has changed and will continue to do so, so where does all the pain and anger go after centuries of bloodshed and horror? This tale is ultimately about rebirth, about turning hundreds of years of war into forgiveness, healing, peace and love. Rebirth of the races. Rebirth of a culture. Rebirth of a people. Max knew that change had to occur. He needed to convince Renata that after the horror of the Rendering, that love and healing were possible. He was determined not to give up on her. He. Was. Relentless. How do you give up on the love of your life? His words will make you wail. Not weep. Not sob. Not cry. You will wail the snotty kind of tears. And you will think of this book long after you have finished it. Pure poetry.
Thank you Elizabeth for a glimpse of future characters. I think that the Irin and Irina's future lies in the hands of the children. Doesn't it always?
Bravo Ms. Hunter for another gift. This one is a true treasure.

I was given a copy of this book for my honest reaction, which, once again resulted in a 5 star rating.
I was simply stunned at the depths that this book takes you. The Irin world is one of most well written series that I have ever had the honor of reading. I am swept away by the magic and beauty with every story that comes out of this series.

***The Storm***
I read The Storm, Max and Renata's story, back in December when it was a part of an anthology. And yet I could not skip over it and jump into Song for the Dying without rereading it once again. It was even more beautiful the second time through. I loved the honest chemistry between Max and Renata. Not every love story is a fairy tale, and as they (and many other Irin) have taught us, love isn't always easy, its hard and complex...and absolutely worth fighting for as Max does for Renata. I simply adore this quiet, powerful couple. We also meet some new characters (who I am already dying to see more of!) that help pave the way for the continuing changes to the future of the Irin and Grigori worlds.

***Song for the Dying***
I didn't know what to expect in this story. Max and Leo have had very basic details of their past explained in the previous books. And I honestly never thought we would get the pleasure of delving deeper into it to see if there was more, and I am so glad we did! As with any tale that goes into the past of an Irin or Irina, the Rending has played a huge part at some point in their life story. You know when you read a book, and something bad happens and you either want to throw the book or you have to stop reading and just sob because it was so atrocious and sad and your brain just can't take any more? Well, that doesn't usually happen to me when I read these terribly tragic Irin stories, because of the way they are written. Elizabeth takes something so heartbreaking, and though there are tears in my eyes, its usually because there is beauty in the tragedy. Somewhere in the horrifying details, she weaves in hope, even in the darkest moments.

There is so much to talk about in this short story, but I don't wish to give much away whether its good or bad. I will say that it was a pleasure to see Max, Renata, Leo and Kyra once again and see the 4 of them interact, see the boys take on the ghosts of their pasts, make peace with some difficult memories and get answers that will allow them to strive for even brighter futures with their mates. Oh...and have I mentioned that I love Vasu? ;)

So this book ended with me having tears running down my face and nearly sobbing. And not because it was sad exactly but because after Max and Leo endured so much pain and went through life thinking one thing and then finally realizing the reality of their situation...it was like they were finally about to release all that pent up hurt and were able to breathe for the first time in their lives.

Elizabeth writes feelings, passion and heart AMAZINGLY which makes it so easy to just fly through these books. I really cannot wait until the next one comes out. I really dont care who its going to be about at this point. I just want more.

Ms Hunter has done it again! This time she created two beautiful stories of love and family, heartbreak and healing and forgiveness. Since I had already read Amid the Winter Snow, I went straight to the Song for the Dying. Good thing I had a box of tissue at hand. I haven't cried that much in a long time. What an emotional story! Nobody does them better than Ms Hunter. Thank you!!!

“Home is what we could have together, but you’re too afraid to build it.”

I LOVED this story! I was dying to hear of Leo and Renata's story when I was first introduced to them in the Irin chronicles. The loss was sad, but the healing was beautiful. I look forward to the rest of the stories to come!

Emotional read-loved it!

Elizabeth Hunter has written another amazing book! This book was very deep, emotionally. I loved Max and Renata's story. I can't wait to read Rhys' this summer.

Renata found her Reshon, Balien, right before the Rending. The couple put off their mating ritual because they were hiding from Grigori attacks and it would weaken both of them afterwards. When Balien gives his life to save Renata's, she doesn't want to live anymore. She is on the run and alone until Mala finds her sleeping on the floor of a church. Mala teaches her to be a warrior, to always protect yourself. So she left the librarian behind and became a warrior.

Max has never seen an Irina before. His mother was killed during the Rending, Max was only a baby and was raised by his uncle and grandfather. The remaining Irina were either killed or they went into hiding. The first time he meets Renata, she pulled a weapon on him after having killed several Grigori. He's fascinated with her, and after a meal together holding hands, becomes the start of a 15 year relationship that Renata refuses to acknowledge.

She knows that he can do so much better than settling for meeting her a couple times a year. She wants him to meet his Reshon, yet knows that she will be devastated when it happens. A part of her died when her family and mate were killed. So pushing Max away is for his own good.

But Max is determined to be with Renata no matter what.

It was a relatevily fast read, a nice back and forth between Max and Renata. It was a bit of time before I picked up this one after the last one, but Irin world is quite hard to forget since it is so different from all the other worlds I have read about. This author knows what she is doing.

This series will most likely go down as one of my top favorite urban fantasy reads. Love it!! In this book, we are given two novellas rather than one book. The first half of the book is Max and Renata's story. She has been one tough cookie throughout the series and I wasn't sure if I could warm up to her character. We find out what happened to her family during the rendering 200 years prior and why she turned into the type of woman she did. Max, he showed a softer side to him in this story.

The second half of the book tells of Leo & Max's past, which we really didn't get much of up to this point. Some suprise twists come out as we find out where they were the first few years of the thier lives. The ending....had me grabbing my tissues.

Despite the fact that The Storm (and Song for the Dying) are novellas, they pack so much pertinent information that help the reader understand Max and Leo that you really feel like you've read a full novel. Both stories have so much emotion, from learning about Renata's family to hearing about how Max and Leo became the hardened soldiers they are today. There is information learned in Song for the Dying that happily surprised me, and I hope we see more of that in upcoming Irin stories. Wonderful novellas, quick reads, and a must for fans of the Irin Chronicles.

I first read the Storm in the book called Amid the Winter Snow...

And it's beautiful...👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

The second novella was great also...

I just give it a 4star rating maybe because I want more, more, more.

But anyway, each story in the Irin Chronicles is unique in its own way. It transcends time. Great and unique characters that you want to hear something or everything about them. A colorful history and a nice story plot that adds to the beauty of the series.

Maybe someday, I could read a story about a Grigori and an Irina... Just wishing.... 😊

Beautiful writing from Hunter as always. But there wasn't much to either of these stories. They reminded more of the snippets that might appear in an author's newsletter or on their website. Sort of little glimpses into the lives of her characters but no real narrative or arc, definitely no suspense.

How I love this world. Max and Renata's story was wonderful. I loved the idea that they didn't have to be reshon to be passionate, committed lovers, friends, mates. Neither expected the other to be more or less than what they were. I loved this quote from Max: "When do we forgive the children of our murderers? When do we let go?" Talk about a commentary on our world today! The inclusion of not just their love story, but Renata's slow willingness to accept the world past her violent childhood was told incredibly well.

A Song for the Dying was a beautiful look at the end of a life. The way Kyra and Renata built bridges between Max, Leo, Peter and Artis was wonderful because it gave us more facets of the women's personalities. And those last scenes were just . . . beautiful. There simply isn't a better word for it.

One thing I love about this whole Irin world is how there is such a respect for the Creator without a focus on Him. So many authors these days are unwilling to acknowledge that in any way, and Hunter doesn't even hesitate. Granted, some of it is the setting of the overall story. But she didn't have to include it at all, and yet did. That means a lot to me.

Renata has come home to the place where her best and worst memories are of family and her destined mate whom she loved and lost. She is part of a group of half-angelic people who have been waring with another angelically related group for centuries. Maxim follows Renata to her hideaway home because he is determined to make her seem him as more than a fellow warrior. While snowed in, they discover others have been living in her home. Their presence pains Renata, but shows perhaps that even one’s forsworn enemies are not always who they seem.

The Storm by Elizabeth Hunter was awesome. Max and Renata’s story was heart breaking at times. The dance they took for well over a decade. The revelations about the Irin world! A definite must read! Can’t wait for more from this world!

A song for the dying was a great view into the irin past and heartbreak through Max and Leo’s past. The healing and the revelations were emotional. Looking forward to the next book!
