I found this book in a used book store and was immediately transported to another time and place. Amidst the horrors of the Armenian genocide I was drawn to the indomitable will and faith of the characters. I loved this book. I found countless gems of wisdom peppered throughout an incredible story.

One of my favourite fictions I have ever read. A very real account of what was happening in Armenia and Russia during the early 20th century, with characters one can definitely relate to. An awesome historical fiction.

I've stared at the spine of this book for decades but its paperback cover only displays laudatory statements and award listings. So, with no idea what the plot would be, I decided to read it. It took me a little while to get into it, but the only thing I disliked was when the novel moved on from the character who I thought was the protagonist to the next generation. (She was there before the chapter break then it's several years in the future after her death.) Some people might find the spiritual references heavy-handed, but I think a few are universal truths. Assuming the background information is accurate, I also learned a bit about Armenian history and culture.

Great book for history buffs. Was a long, slow, read, and while I enjoyed the peek into the culture and timeframe, I didn't find it super captivating or engaging.
