Why Stop?: A Guide to Texas Historical Roadside Markers

Rate this book
Just about everyone in Texas has done it. You pass one of those solitary roadside historical markers and by the time you wonder "What the heck happened here?" you're too far down the road to turn back. Well, now you can read and enjoy more than 2,500 of these historical markers without stopping your car, or even leaving your home!

This third edition of Why Stop? contains the actual inscriptions on many of Texas' most prominent and interesting historical roadside markers. It alphabetically lists the hundreds of cities and towns nearest the markers and pinpoints each marker with specific highway and mileage information. You can easily find them whether you're sitting in your car or your favorite reading chair.

These historical roadside markers let you relive the triumphs and tragedies that shaped Texas---they let you stand where early settlers stood, see what they saw, and perhaps feel what they felt. This third edition of Why Stop? preserves this heritage by placing at your fingertips the inscriptions on the monuments that mark the great, near-great, and not-so-great people and events that made the Lone Star State what it is today.

This is in the car with us. Not all of them get found so it's like a treasure hunt for history.

This book comes with us anytime we leave the city. It's designed to enable drivers to zoom past historical markers while still reading the text. We use it more to help us FIND the markers so that we can stop and photograph them.
If a new edition comes out, we will get it, and donate this one to the local library.
