Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Belle, Jasmine, and Ariel aren’t just pretty and sweet—they’re also polite! In this original book with all-new, full-color art, the Disney Princesses share their rules on good manners so all little girls can learn to be as polite as a princess.
vile. ugly book. teaches young ladies how to be polite. accept blame. cover for men. men are the boss. take their beating and accept it was their own fault. this is disney by way of bob jones university and focus on the family. this book was shown to me by a clerk at b&n, embarrassed to have it on the shelves.
Who wants to be like a Disney Princess? Girls? You do? Good! Better be nice and kind and demure ALL THE TIME. After all, Ariel never interrupts (her father, her [male!] fishy friends) unless it's important. And Cinderella does all her chores without complaining, right?
My daughter picked this at the library and we just read it last night. She loves the Disney princesses. This book was fun because it goes over all sorts of manners of being polite with pictures of one of the princesses acting each manner out.
It was fun to discuss with my daughter whether or not she already does that or if she needs to work on that. She's only 2, so I'm not sure any of this will stick, but we'll likely pick this book up a couple times to keep reminding her as she gets older about all of her manners.
The illustrations were typical Disney. We enjoyed them. The text was very simple. Just one sentence per page. This would be a good easy read for beginning readers.
Very glad I never came across this as a child. Messages about politness aren't that bad, but if you only show women being polite you already have a problem. It was only compounded by them being polite to others, and some of the examples being outright lies (''Belle always eats with fork and knives'' when the movie made a point of showing her not doing so after realizing that cutlery was inaccessible to the Beast due to the way his hands were formed). The Snow White example of ''Snow White always waits her turn'' while showing her waiting to wash until all the dwarves where done just made me mad. Please don't read this to your young relatives.
I mean... it was good to show manners but it really felt like manipulation: don't you want to be like them? I would rather my daughters want to be like themselves, but then learn manners. Also, the motives behind manners were so that you can get something out of it. Daughters are already manipulators, I don't think this is the right way to teach manners. But I fixed ours - with a pen.
I was worried that this was going to be a weird book teaching little girls gender roles but it's basically like "Cinderella covers her mouth when she coughs. Snow White waits her turn. Jasmine says thank you." It's manners that every child should know. Heck, I'd give it to my nephew to read.
This easy read book is about manners. Disney princesses have very good manners like not eating with their mouth full. Everyone should be like them.
I would use this book for a lesson with Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade. This book would be used at the beginning of the year when classes are talking about classroom rules. First I would read the book and then I would ask the students what kind of rules we should have in our classroom.
Not a fan of the stereotypes this book perpetuates. That being said, they are still lessons my daughter needs to learn and if the princesses can convince her to be a good kid, then I guess I can't be too mad.
