This is possibly one of the most important books I have ever read. The interesting thing is that the title and description do not really indicate the depth of the psychology in the book. The Arnos have done something with the study of temperaments that completes what I consider to be a fun but ultimately incomplete study. Everyone knows (or should know) about the humors and the temperaments and what they represent.. but the Arnos (husband and wife psychologists)have expanded on what I had always thought was just a personality profile that didn't quite actually fit.

The 4 humors/temperaments have traditionally been divided into Sanguine (essentially happy-go-lucky and extroverted), Melancholy (brooding and introverted), Choleric (domineering and controlling), and Phlegmatic (laid back and immovable). Where I always considered myself to be mostly Phlegmatic, I now recognize that my temperament does not fit that profile like I thought. What the Arnos have done through their studies in the 1980's is to add a fifth temperament -- the Supine -- as a completely separate type. And rather than categorize people based on their personality type (which is what the literature I had previously read did), the Arnos break the categories into 3 areas: Inclusion (essentially our need for a social circle), Control (our needs regarding decision making and attitudes toward our acquaintances), and Affection (our needs regarding deep relationships and physical affection). Furthermore, each of these categories is broken down into an expressed need and a received need. In other words, we may express one way, but we need to have it expressed to us in a different way.

The Arno profile takes the temperaments to a whole new level. In a way, I wish that the title was not so misleading, as secular readers will not wish to read something about being created in God's Image. The truth is that the psychology of needs presented in this book is perhaps the most important and illuminating thing I have ever read. While I was interested in the temperaments before, the previous literature that only breaks it into a blanket categorization of a person's personality is sorely lacking. Where those were day 1 of kindergarten, the Arnos' study takes that into a true, deep-level understanding of human NEEDS. We cannot change our NEEDS. These must be met for us to be satisfied, and all of our needs are different. Part of the main reason we have so much conflict with our families, acquaintances, and co-workers is that we act with them according to our needs and temperament, rather than trying to understand what their needs and temperament requires.

There are portions of this book that detail how the temperaments fit in with our viewing and understanding of God, and this is comforting for believers, like me, in that it illuminates how my approach to understanding and relating with God is different than so many others I have known.

I have to emphasize the importance of understanding the temperament NEEDS regardless of faith, however. I cannot more highly recommend a book about human behavior than this one, which is why I wish the title had been something a little bit more mainstream for those that won't bother based on it. This is a psychology book first. And it is the best book on human behavior that I have EVER encountered. Don't be frightened off by the title. Lovers of the study of human behavior, pick this up. I'll be shocked if it does not resonate.
